  • Hello everyone & Happy New Year! I’m Robert from NYC, new to this site and did my first fasting day yesterday. It wasn’t bad at all. I decided to just have one 600 cal meal late in the evening at 9pm and just had water and a few cups of black coffee during the day. Looking forward to my next fast day, Thursday. Glad to be here!

Well done Robert and congratulations. The first day is hard but it gets easier, believe me! On fast days a lot of us just have a meal in the evening for a variety of reasons including that it seems to help with sleep.

    All the best for Thursday.

    Hey Abigail,
Thanks for the encouraging words. It really helps when you’re busy and not thinking about food which is why I picked both of my fast days while I’m at work, and not on weekends. I also feel really great working out in a fasted state. I’m looking forward to shedding pounds of body fat and reaping some of the many rewards of IF.

I had my first Fast Day yesterday too. I am desperate to wear the Tshirt. I feel i have actually achieved something in my life. It might as well have been a marathon I ran as it has taken me months of procrastinating before ‘doing’ it. I went until 6pm then had a 350kcal dinner followed by a milky drink before bed. Today I am not even that hungry! woo hoo to healthiness 🙂

That’s great cooperthethird! I think the author is correct, fasting teaches your brain that you don’t need to eat all of the time. In this day and age with so much junk food made available 24/7, it’s no wonder we have an obesity epidemic on our hands. But I’ll tell you one thing though, I don’t think I can pull off a fast day without my coffee! LOL. Stay focused!

    Robert

Well done Cooperthethird, you deserve to wear your Tshirt proudly. Fasting becomes a way of life after a while and you get into a rhythm that becomes easier as the days and weeks go by despite the odd set back in my case.

Robert, working out is interesting when fasting, although I would not quite call my early morning walks ‘working out’. However, there’s something quite addictive about exercise and not eating. Something happens to the brain and the body that feels really good. I am sure scientists have tested it and there’s probably a thread about it here somewhere. Don’t really care why, just know it’s good.

Oh, and I couldn’t get through a fast day without coffee either. To each their own poison, right?

Fast 2 today and I am hungrier than Fast day 1 but the black coffee helps me ride the waves. I have a beef bolognese sauce on courgette spaghetti to look forward to later. Just need to combat the lack of sleeping on a Fast day now.

Lack of sleep is a problem. I haven’t worked out how to get around it except to tell myself that I can cope with less sleep two nights per week just as I cope with less food two days per week. Some nights are better than others.

Hang in there, it’s just your second fast day, think of the benefits that are coming your way.

I survived too, first day today. Wow. A bit of a headache, but feeling really energetic and alert. Had my 500 calorie meal at 6pm.Good luck to all of you.

If you are having problems sleeping you could try listening to an audio book. This is my preferred way to drop off when having issues. I have an account with audible which allows you to set a timer for the book to turn itself off (vital for returning to the story at a later date!). I find if i set the timer for half an hour I am asleep before it ends. If i don’t use the timer i tend to find i keep waking up (the voice must wake me during my light sleep. I guess the radio would work as well, especially if it has a timer.

    Hi Slimfit, Cooper, and Marie-Louise,
Congratulations on getting started on 5:2. Most of us find after a few weeks we enjoy 5:2 as the FDs become much easier, and I look forward to mine. 1 meal at 6 is my pattern, Mon and Thurs. Been on 5:2 for over a year lost 16 kgs with no exercise due to health issues, have reduced medication and improved health. My tips are lots of no cal fluids, e.g. Peppermint tea, very weak Earl Grey tea, water, sparkling water, eat low cal lowGI for quantity. If you hit a plateau give any starchy carbs a miss eg any food from grains, potatoes, white sweet potato, corn, rice, and sugar. Headaches at the beginning of 5:2 can be withdrawal from something you’ve been eating that may not suit your body but you weren’t aware of. Read info for newbies by simcoelove on the newbies threads. It’s a perfect intro to 5:2. I sleep well, and also use talking books. Thanks for the audible tip NeaZ. Zucchini “pasta” is great Cooper. Love that little gadget.

    Oh and I want a 5:2 t shirt too.

    Best of luck all,
    Onwards and Downwards,
    Merry
