  • The recipe is from Delia Smith’s Summer collection and is available via deliaonline. It is her adaptation of an old French recipe for chicken in vinegar.

Purple, having visited Australia several times during your summer I can understand why the burning is carried out. It is an unpleasant necessity. I hope the air clears soon.

Amazon what a cracking post loved the lessons and a wonderful wrap up of this the fast life and way of life well put. Nice to see some new people posting get involved have a discussion ask questions stay upbeat and motivated

Excellent game of footy last night although by the sound of the Metropolitan Lamb Roast you described was just delicious I am sure you were distracted over dinner and did not watch and why would you I hope you had sea salt or Himalayan rock salt on the Lamb Fat with garlic and rosemary I may have convinced myself I need to get one for tonight I think ๐Ÿ˜‰
Will also be a tough game the pies and the doggies good luck to your boys I see big Trav still in the wilderness and no VFL this week not helpful. I will be watching.
    Happy Sunday Friends
    Peace RT

    Morning all,

Yes, thankyou Amazon for the wonderful ‘sermon’, very fitting on a Sunday morning and very, very true, every word! I hope your dinner was lovely too, though I like the sound of the fruitcake!

Very pleased your team triumphed RT, lets hope mine can pull off a miracle this afternoon. I will be lighting the fire and settling in at 3pm. I fear we may lose Trav to another team, the ‘big american’ seems to have filled his shoes with great style. Yes, as matter of fact there was pink himalayan salt on the lamb, the roast was divine (keeping with the biblical theme). I think you need to cook a leg tonight to celebrate your great win! Wiwi it was not NZ but Victorian lamb actually, the wine was NZ though! I buy meat on line from a lovely young couple who run a small family business supplying grass fed beed and lamb, direct to the door. Its a bit more expensive, but so worth it, always perfect meat.

I did enjoy some roast spuds as well, so I think a sensible day is in order eating wise today…. have a lovely Sunday all x

    Morning! (for this post) ๐Ÿ˜˜
Amazon – I will print your words as a reminder of my healthy WOL. Very nice, thank you.

It’s amazing the food choices/recipes from each continent. The nicest lamb I had was about 15 years ago. My husband took me out for dinner on my birthday and I just decided to try something new well lol, the little cute lamb was my meal. Lamb it’s my first choice and the NZ it’s grade A here in the IS. My husband feels bad eating “pets”. A little situation a have to deal with.

    Be good my friends ๐Ÿ˜˜

P, I wish I could send you some rain. I emptied 70mm out of the gauge over the last couple of days. The weather is so balmy (in both its meanings). It’s just a few days til winter, all the doors are open today, the washing has been on the line, temperature has been up to 18 degrees.

The worm farm has been emptied of accumulated castings and pee: happy fruit trees and garden. Feijoas are still falling from the tree – it’s been a really good crop this year, lovely.

When we lived in the US many years ago, lamb was an occasional treat, HCB. (definitely not IS ๐Ÿ™‚ ) I’m just about to put the chicken on to roast – hope there’s a little left-over meat for the soup tomorrow’s FD. And I have completed another bone boiling for stock, to be cooled and frozen in small portions. Some will be used in tonight’s gravy, and some in tomorrow’s soup.

    Hi B
Crazy “balmy” weather here too! Freezing and windy yesterday, shivered all night, and today we could swim (if we’d brought our togs), clear blue sky, 19 deg and whales cruising past. ๐Ÿ˜Š No rain on the horizon, sadly. P

No, and the prevailing wind is in the wrong direction ๐Ÿ™ Love the whales!

    Morning/evening all

I had a lovely dinner with my friend and we drank far too much fermented grape juice. Got home at 2.30am ๐Ÿ˜ฎ slept like a log and woke up feeling great ๐Ÿ™‚

She made the richest most delicious baked chocolate cheesecake ๐Ÿฐ One slice was quite enough. She told me that she would give me half of it to bring home but I managed to escape without any ๐Ÿ˜†

Have a good one everybody ๐Ÿ˜œ

It seems everyone is having a lovely weekend. Weather in very hazy here in Holland, but had a nice weekend reconnecting with friends. A bit shocking though as I went to a spa with a friend and everyone was naked! Being British this was a bit strange. Makes you wonder though, as there were all shapes and sizes and all the Dutchies didn’t care at all! And we are all worried about wearing bikinis on our holiday – when you get there and no-one else has the perfect body either I do wonder why we stress about it so much.

Off out again tonight for sushi with friends and again tomorrow night. We haven’t been in Europe for 2 months and only back for 2 weeks so have to pack all the social arrangements in! Fasting Tuesday and Thursday to suit my social calendar this week. I lost 2 kilo in the past 3 weeks so really happy. This does work, and I just have to commit to not falling off the wagon!

    Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

Congratulations Ali 2kg in 3 weeks is above the trend line wow everyone naked in a spa my mind is going faster than my keyboard warrior fingers can cope with ๐Ÿ˜† blue sky and sunshine but bitterly cold at the moment will fine up for sure later. Nama the lads where right in it till the last quarter and stuck to the game well Carlton 5 on the trot it seems a resurgence in the Blues camp crazy times and Freo got a fright and nearly won a game ๐Ÿ˜ฏ happy fast Monday people

And that’s how I walked away from a beautiful brunch today without foods or drinks. It’s was a short social affair after church.
I had my fermented grape juice today for dinner but it was in my comfort zone.
Many blessings to all Fasters this week. I’ll try my best tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜˜

    Morning/evening all,

BH Monday here but still a FD and I feel in need of it after too much eating and drinking this weekend.
I’m going to attempt 3:4 again this week and hope the scales show another loss at the weekend.
I have another busy one planned and am hoping the weather is better than the forecast as I want to get out in the fresh air and walk and I’m not into wet weather gear!

RT you are so naughty and must have a vivid imagination ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have a good one everybody ๐Ÿ˜œ

    Good Morning All,
I have returned with tail between my legs after shutting down for a week, sulking and skulking and not fasting particularly well. The problem with getting low( depressed) is the negativity. There doesn’t seem to be any hope of ever suceeding at your goals, I was on the point of considering a gastric bypass.
However I have used the down time well, read Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code which may help me deal with my low calorie, no progress system. I am most likely insulin resistent which has probably been caused by long term low calorie dieting over the last 30 years. It’s a scary prospect and may take a long time to redress. His book makes me feel better about myself and as I perceived ‘my’ failures when in fact the failures have been following the ‘so called’ experts advice on losing weight. I have come back on the thread to tell others ‘in my half sunken boat’ to read the book. This thread is not just about the sucesses which of course we celebrate but about the struggles we all have at times, we need to support each other. I definitely need support as I still have a very long journey ahead, over three stone. But a couple of years ago it was 5 stone so I am making progress. According to Jason Fung my body wants to return to its former weight and is making life very difficult, it is not going to win. I am going to get ‘better informed’ about nutrition and beat it. Now have a pile of books to read ‘How we learn to eat’ by Bee Wilson, ‘Gut’ by Giuliani Enders and ‘The Diet Myth’ by Tim Sector. It’s a start. A public thanks to Fast Trackers for just being there for me. When you don’t have family or friends support because they don’t approve of fasting it can seem a very lonely journey.
So Fasting Monday, Wednesday and Friday – zero calories. Other days avoiding complex carbs and sugar plus no snacking. Introducing Apple cider vinegar, walnuts and pistachio nuts to my eating plan on non fast days. No Snacking even healthy options like fruit. Sticking with 19/5 on non fast days. If I hit maintenance I will increase fast from 24 to 36 hours. Continue drinking two litres of water daily.
I haven’t read the thread so will catch up tonight. If you have lost weight well done if you haven’t ‘don’t beat yourself up’ it doesn’t help, forget it and move on.
PS- I lost 1 lb this week having done 2 x 24 hour fasts but I also had three meals out which were not carb or sugar free but I enjoyed them. I also found a really good new Vegetarian Restaurant with super food salads.

    Hi Jo
You’ve used your ‘down time’ well and have come back fighting, armed with knowledge.
You CAN do it! Go for it! We are all here to support each other, no matter how long we have been on this wol.
    Cheers P ๐Ÿ˜Š

    Hi Jo,

Good to see your post. There must be something in the air. I am also reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, and Gut by Giulia Enders, and The Diet Myth by Tim Spector. I mean to say, why read one book, when you can dip in and out of 3 books at once. That’s me at the end of a fast day. It’s getting very cold here on the last day of Autumn.

It’s good to learn new things and to reinforce why we are doing 5:2 ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ

    Cheers, Bay

    Hi Jo,

So pleased to see you posting again. The majority of us are in that half sunken boat, bailing furiously and trying to find a solution.

The support on this thread is great but we are all responsible for our own bodies and related issues and sometimes we need to work it out for ourselves. Taking time out from our endless discussions and suggestions was an excellent decision as you’ve returned feeling better and in a positive frame of mind.

For me, reading The Obesity Code was the final piece of the jigsaw and told me what I had suspected all along, that our bodies try to protect us from losing our fat because it is programmed for survival and as it is so sophisticated we need to somehow trick it into thinking we are not calorie restricting.

You’ve come a long way since you started trying to lose weight, learnt a lot, some of it the hard way (haven’t we all) and you have given so many people inspiration and unconditional support since you started this thread. You have also made many friends ๐Ÿ™‚

Be proud of yourself and what you’ve achieved so far and as Purple said we are all here to support each other.

    Evening/morning all,

Glad you are feeling more positive Jo, as you can see from the last three posts, there is plenty of support on this forum. I hope you were not seriously depressed, but more frustrated and momentarily down. I am so glad Jason Fung et al are publishing the truth at last! Those of us with the tendency to enjoy sugar were all turned into sugar junkies by the food industry. But no more, we are wise to their dishonesty now!

Bay don’t you have 31 days in May in Canberra? Is that why all the pollies are ahead of themselves?

RT what a weekend of footy. Methinks my team are doomed for the rest of this season with so many injuries! I really enjoyed the game yesterday though, despite losing, the young players showed lots of real potential. I think poor Eddie is ready to quit!

I fasted well all day today, even managed to go to our big barn Costco to stock up on non perishables and completely avoided the ‘sugar’ aisles. Then I came unstuck big time tonight on sourdough breadstick! Proving that emotional eating is alive and well, the bread followed a favourable doctors report on a health issue for husband. Funny way to celebrate non imminent widowhood, by poisoning my own bod! Ah well, tomorrow is another (fast) day.

    Good Morning,
Jojo welcome back! Depressed people don’t make sense of anything. You are just frustrated and time off it’s necessary sometimes. You are frustrated because your are not reaching your weight goal. You’ve motivated so many of us and we are here to give you push back to the tracks. You will get there and we are here to witness your success. We are not going anywhere ๐Ÿ˜˜
Now it’s raining and hot here! It’s quiet everywhere. We are also enjoying ourselves. Here in the US today officially starts summer with big bbq everywhere. Because we are not going anywhere I am sticking with my Monday fast.
Nama aren’t you in NZ? Do you have Costco warehouse there.
    Be well my Folks

Healthcoach I am in Melbourne, Australia. We have had Costco here about 5 years. Its Barata and Tangatawiwi who are the kiwis – Wiwi is actually bi national, she also hails from France. Its enough to confuse any newcomers to this thread. Myself, Purple, Bayleaf, Nicky, RT and AussieOma are all Aussies!

    Afternoon all,

Another lovely day here, hot in the sun, but a pleasant breeze. Just getting some indoor jobs done then aiming to go for a bike ride this afternoon. I’m a bit apprehensive as I’ve not been cycling since last year, and I didn’t do much then, so I’m not at all bike fit and it’s all hills round here โ˜น๏ธ (And ‘proper’ cyclists don’t get off and walk!).

Jo, I’ve been thinking of you while running this week, so it’s nice to see you back and hear how you’re doing. Hopefully you can turn a corner now, with your new-found knowledge and understanding, and get back into a nice rhythm again (and not be too impatient and disheartened if it’s slower than you’d like ๐Ÿ˜€ )

RT there wasn’t much to look at apart from a few walnuts although I hope your imagination was better!

Jojo do you into do 500 calories on fast days? I couldn’t cope with zero personally, which is why it’s easier to stick to it. The thought of eating nothing would be depressing for me. I find it challenging to be creative with the 500 calories. You can eat a ton of vegetables for 500 calories.

Just competed Gillian Michaels 30 day shred video and arms are hurting. I hate press ups!! Trying to motivate myself to do a second one but sitting on the sofa writing to you folks instead!

Back to Canada next week, and thinking of doing a 10 day detox again. Far too much socialising whilst in Europe, which is nice but I don’t think my liver is very happy!

Hello jojo58, I identified with you, I’m 57 years old and I think I’m resistant to insulin because my body just wants to regain lost weight, I fasted 23: 1 totos day of the week and on Saturday and Sunday stay in my TDEE, I’m more than 40 days without losing weight, on the contrary even increased slightly.

Follow the DR blog. Jason Fung, has not translated book written in my language.

Any novelty and help would you share with me too, because we are in the same boat.

    A big hug from Brazil!

    Hi Anaide,
I am Brazillian as well however I have the book the Obesity Code which I am reading it right now.
I would say Jojo and many other good souls here have lots of experience, wisdom and good knowledge with fasting, losing weight and gaining back. This thread just turned 2 years and have lots of action.
The book is great but we need support to keep going. Stick around, post your questions and the smarties here will give you a boost of confidence.
Um abraรงo virtual bem grande ๐Ÿ’–

    Hi Anaide,
    Tips from Jason Fung
Do not snack, even healthy snacks- fast on water( sparkling or still) or coffe/ tea. Green tea especially good as is cider apple vinegar.
Avoid processed carbs, they cause the worse insulin spikes which causes the storing of fat.
If you must have whole grain bread soak it in vinegar and extra virgin oil to cut the insulin spike
Cut sugar out of your diet, check labels for it, it has 8 different names on packaging, especially watch it on salad dressings and sauces, preferably make your own from balsamic vinegar and extra virgin oil. Avoid any other oils for cooking, dressings.
Eat meats where animals grass fed or sea, river fished( non farmed or tinned)
Eat as few meals as possible and only when you are hungry, not by mealtime.
Exercise accounts for 5 % of weight loss and make you more hungry therefore you are more likely to do compensatory eating if not calorie controlled.

That’s all I can think of for now but others on this site have read the book and may contribute.
    Good Luck!

    Thank JOJO58 and HealthCoachB

Am Lowcarb two years ago, no longer suffer more with carbohydrates, removed all the grains too, have lost a lot of weight with it.

Thank you for the tips! I love you guys and your publications! I read everything!

Now with fasting I hope to return to lose again.

How lovely RT, enjoy!!! Love a good road trip, I hope you are in the XR6? Hope the sun is shining for you.

Have a good road trip RT. Perfect weather for it. Do you have a campfire at night? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒŒ๐ŸŒŒ

Fasted yesterday and yes, Amazon, washed the floors. ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ˜‡. Keeps me busy. Lost a kg that I put on last week while. Indulging in carbs, sugar and wine. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜.

Frosty nights and blue sky days and the last of the Autumn leaves is falling. Winter tomorrow!

    Cheers, Bay ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒบ

    Hello,

To Anaide if I may add: be cautious with alcohol in take, prefer low glycemic fruits.

Per advise on my FD to keep myself busy with my forever cleaning I decided to organize a stupid bookshelf under the staircase filled with nonsense items. Old magazines, books, video tapes plus photo albums and many loose photos in envelopes. That was the most difficult and emotional task in ages. I’ve heard from friends that downsize their house that story in this case it’s just to have things in order. How slimmer and gorgeous skin I used to have. I never appreciated beautiful letters from my nieces and nephews back home and the ones no longer here … I had to stop because the tears were coming down. I’ve told my husband that specific project it’s gonna take some time! He totally understood ๐Ÿ’– O will go back maybe on a nonFd.

Still hot here! Did my 21:3 and planning to eat tomorrow only when my body it’s hungry.

Keeping strong here! RT – enjoy your zen mood.

    Xoxo
    B

Morning all, RT- A road trip, how great- enjoy! Nothing like campfire food. I used to teach Forest School so we often cooked that way. My speciality was spicey squash soup, very warming. Not so romantic though, stinking of smoke. Do you still fast on holiday? I found it very difficult on my long trip last year.

Very windy here, the noise of it outside kept waking me up last night so I am having a lay in and chill day today. Plenty to read still and lots to organise. The washing machine died over the weekend, back to hand washing, it sucks.

Non fast day today, planning a prawn salad.
Keep drinking fasters. Jason Fung like many others recommends a glass or two of red wine which is great because it’s my favourite. He didn’t mention gin and tonic though sadly.

    Morning/evening all,

Ali, not sure what you mean by 10 day detox, but if you’ve been drinking lots of alcohol due to a busy social schedule all you need to do is not drink any for a week or two. Our bodies are very sophisticated machines and they don’t hang on to “toxins” they get rid of them as soon as they can without any help. A couple of weeks of 5:2 ensuring you make the healthiest choices every day and no vino is all you need ๐Ÿ™‚

Dull and overcast this morning with heavy rain forecast. I’m off to the gym and am hoping that the tennis isn’t rained off again so I can spend the afternoon watching.

I’ve started reading The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living. There is a lot of detailed information regarding human physiology but it is fascinating. It follows the same line of thinking of other books we’ve discussed regarding the role of insulin in causing us to regain or have problems losing weight and another term “carbohydrate intolerance” is used. It is described as causing raised blood glucose, raised truglyceride and cholesterol levels and hypertension and of course weight gain.
As someone with high cholesterol levels and hypertension is has got me thinking.

    Time to get moving

have a good one everybody ๐Ÿ˜œ

    Amazon,
I definitely am ‘intolerant’ to pork and wheat but it still didn’t stop me indulging in the past. I also was a smoker for many years before having children. Why do we do this stuff that is bad for us? Why do Governments not crack down on the manufacturers of obesity and death aids. It’s not enough to label stuff, it is not working. It’s not like the NHS can afford the treatment of this ever increasing problem. It’s so sad to know that western ‘bad food’ culture has spread to other previously ‘not at risk’ cultures like Japan and China.
With regard to high cholesterol I still have it (not medicating though)and have been low processed carbs for over two years now. I think there is a genetic link too. No idea if my parents had it, not sure it was a test they did 50 years ago. My father died aged 57 after his third heart attack( very petite, thin and active man) my mother died at 90, regular weight, also very active right up to the end. I got the active gene but not the slim one, shame!
According to the latest book I am reading only 30 % of the population has the ‘slim’ gene, the others died trying to survive extreme living and travelling survival lives or in some cases eaten by the fat people. Nice thought for the day! So basically we evolved as fatties to survive. Now we need to evolve as ‘skinnies’ to survive the effects of being fat. Yoyo again! Life is a bit** that’s for sure!
Blood pressure is under control these days now though, so good news. Whether that was down to diet or retirement who knows?
Forgot to mention that jogging is on cancelled, my knees were beginning to get sore and hot. Shame I was enjoying it and improving fitness. Back to the drawing board, maybe try the cross trainer again or rejoin the gym regardless of cost so I can swim again. How often do you swim Nama? I used to swim daily at one time.

    JoJo
I’m so glad you’re here and you’ve inspired me to keep trying. Thank you. I put on 4lb this week and have been very down about it. I hadn’t thought about doing zero calories on a fast day but I’ll try it. I’m just all over the place and can’t seem to settle into it but desperately want / need to. I had awful binges for a few days and it effected my breathing and mood big time. I also have 3 stone to lose to get to’normal’ weight for height. I have so many books on sugar-free diets, fat-free, juicing etc etc – can you recommend 1 book that made a difference to you that got you really going on this way of life? I hope you can help because I honestly feel sometimes that this is all there is now – middle aged with no energy feeling rotten most of the time.
Many thanks all for posting your experiences
    Aine x

Welcome back, Jojo. You’ve been missed. It’s great to hear you have returned with new enthusiasm and purpose, determined to join the maintainers one day ๐Ÿ™‚ Shame about the jogging, but you will find other avenues.

Stay safe on the roads, RT. Winter tomorrow, but it’s already arrived this week.

    Jo,

re: jogging. I get sore and hot joints when I start running again after winter, particularly if I haven’t allowed adequate recovery time between runs or I try and do too much too soon.

Knowing you, I suspect you threw yourself in, did too much too soon, now suffering the effects and going to give up altogether rather than just easing back, giving your knees time to recover and then carrying on sensibly?

You can’t embark on a new exercise program without experiencing aches/ pains. Your body is not used to the exercise. Unless you injure yourself and really do need to stop, a bit of soreness is to be expected I’m afraid!

    Hi Barata,
I am so sorry, I think I missed your birthday, I hope it was fun?

Aine333, you sound very down. Currently I am reading ‘The Diet Myth’ quite interesting. Most importantly I think you need to stop blaming yourself. We are victims of misinformation and our bodies are in ‘store and survive’ mode especially if like me you have been on low cal diet for years. We need to get our metabolisms to normal healthy mode. Fasting is the only answer( for longevity and health)stop feeding the hunger dragon. You will find that a glass of water or cup of tea or coffee will stem the desire to eat. I dring about 6 pots of green tea on an average day. I like honey and camomile best. It’s probably better to have one without honey, I like blackcurrent and nettle too, off to restock today. If you have a pedometre try to increase your steps to 10,000 daily. The fresh air will help your mood too. Perhaps join a walking group, there are free ones in most places. Tv watching in the evening is the worst time for me, get some hobbies that engross your attention. I have done knitting, colouring, playing cards and embroidery, all effective. Currently I am locking myself in my bedroom reading diet and nutrition books. Having a busy social life is a two sided coin, great for mood, bad for temptation. Most of the people I mix with are ‘of a certain age’ and have had a lifetime of ‘conditioning’ about how and what to eat, fasting is not on their radar, no support there.
I am going to pick up my yoga, swimming and dancing, both ceased when I cancelled my gym membership last year and I have missed them. Variety is the spice of life, I have been doing too much bowling, my latest addiction. What can I say I have an addictive personality. Could be worse, could be drink and drugs!
Last thing- if you are on medication this could hamper your weightloss. I have found asthma medication, antihistamine, painkillers and antibiotics all effect success.
Weight daily and post daily, we will support you, be vigilant, accept failures ( we can’t be strong everyday, it’s too stressful)and move on. Stress is another barrier to weightloss by the way. Relax and have fun.

    Aine,

Read the fast diet book, it is full of useful information but bear in mind that when it says you can eat what you want on non fast days it means that no foods are prohibited, not that you can eat as much as you want. You need to stay under your TDEE.

In order to have gained 4lbs of fat last week you would have had to eat an extra 14000 calories so it is likely that most of it is fluid and food in transit. As Jo says don’t blame yourself, last week is over, so pick yourself up and start afresh.

If you’ve only just started 5:2 I would not recommend zero calories on a fast day. Give yourself time to get used to fasting and getting the amount of extra fluid you need right. If you feel dizzy, faint or have a headache try some salt, either as a hot drink eg Bovril or Miso or just take a couple of pinched of salt washed down with some water. You should also ensure that you don’t over eat on non fast days. I found the easiest way to do that was to plan my meals if possible. If you eat and extra helping of something don’t beat yourself up and allow it to develop into a binge just forgive yourself. One of the things I worked on was the speed I ate. I ensured that every time I ate even if it was an apple, I would sit down and eat it as slowly as I could manage. It makes a huge difference.
Once you’ve cracked fast days you can think about doing an extra one or zero calories but you must give your mind and your body a chance to get used to it.

As for daily weighing, opinion is divided on that. After a FD your weight has usually dropped but the following day it might have risen due to food in transit, and there are a myriad of other reasons why weight fluctuates on a daily basis. If you can cope with that weigh daily but I can’t and I only weigh myself once per week sometimes less as I want to see a smaller number than last time I stepped on the scales.

You can do it but this is a way of life not a diet and it takes time.

We are all here to give you support, encouragement and consolation when required ๐Ÿ™‚

Back from the gym which was quiet at is usual during school holidays, but had to travel home through the monsoon ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
I’m far too hungry to contemplate fasting today so I’ve had some Bircher muesli and will have one of my 350 calorie specials for dinner.

    Hi Amazon,
Remind me what’s in Bircher Muesli, it was in the Blood Sugar Diet book which now resides with a friend who is trying to deal with her pre diebetes testing level. I know I ate it but can’t remember it. There were so many different meals on that plan.

I am also on a non fast day but am not eating until I feel hungry, not yet. Usually on 19/5 I hit the fridge on the dot of 1 PM. It will be interesting to see when it is today.
I am rejoining the gym, restricted hours at ยฃ50 per month, see if I get my monies worth. Apparently it’s quite hard to book into my favourite classes.

Currently reading about benefits of dairy improving gut microbes. Fortunately I love smelly cheese and full fat yogurt with probiotics. Happy to have a small daily dose on non fast days. Scientific proof is a bit sketchy though.

Aine333- stick to 500 cals and 5-2 when new to fasting. I suffered headaches and low mood due to withdrawal from surgery foods. It was a tough three months. It gets easier after that.

    Jo,

Bircher muesli can contain anything you want to put into it. I use 20-30 g of porage oats soaked for a few minutes in some unsweetend almond milk, and then add a selection of seeds, nuts, dried and fresh fruit and a sprinkle of coconut flakes. I have some of my full fat home made yoghurt on top. It comes in at around 500-600 calories depending on what I add. I really enjoy it and have been known to have a small portion as a FD dinner ๐Ÿ™‚

Rejoining the gym is a great idea if you can get value for money. I don’t have to book a class, it is a case of turn up and join in and although my hours are restricted to 9am-4pm if I want to do a class that starts later I just need to arrive before 4. I don’t know if many take advantage of that or not but there is such a good variety of classes in the mornings that it would be madness to turn up at the same time as those arriving after work.

When I get back from Cornwall I’m going to try to get myself out of bed earlier on a Tuesday so I can return to the 9am Pilates class, but it means travellong at the busiest time of day which I’m not too keen on ๐Ÿ˜–

I had a short post workout swim this morning after a lovely five minutes of stretching out in the jacuzzi which I had to myself ๐Ÿ˜„

    Aine,

Can I jump in with my 2 cents worth. Jason Fung’s Obesity Code will show you what you need to eat and do. Of course its up to you to do it though.

Success wont chase you, you have to chase success.

Do something silly like write a big sign “Think before you eat” or something similar and place it on the fridge or food pantry. Read the sign EVERY time you go to open the door whether its a fast day or not. You want to retrain yourself. Only you can figure out how to break the cycle. Reading books will help you to understand what to do but it wont do it for you. It really is up to you.

    Amazon,

I’ve been wondering for ages why you always say ‘Porage’ and not ‘porridge’ but didn’t like to ask! Today I may have had my light bulb moment ๐Ÿ’ก You eat Scots Porage Oats?!

    Hello HealthCoachB

Thanks for the advice, it helps that our journey toward the ideal weight.

I’m also doing cupboard, and the memories are all over the place, my eldest son died at 15 years, I am a mother who does not get a day without remembering him.

My daughter has done Masters in Sweden and is now in Germany, will be PHD, or do three years you are away from home, I would love to go visit her but Brazil is going through a terrible crisis and our salaries are very low, meanwhile we managing the foul that it makes us.

    I love you guys !!!

    A big hug

Happy, I’ve always spelled the word that way and “porridge” just looks wrong to me ๐Ÿ˜‰

Happy, I did build up 5 mins at a time and only did three 5 min jogs with a rest walk between, hardly rushing it. Obviously was too much for my knees at my weight. I will come back to it though maybe when I am a couple of stone lighter. Meanwhile I will do the treadmill and speed walk. Years ago I used to run 5 miles and really enjoyed it, in summer. I was in a group of Mums from school and I think the group were something to do with Reebok.

Wow Anaide that must be so difficult for you. Thoughts are with you. It’s good to keep memories though of loved ones.

Fasted today and was fine and cycled to the supermarket and back. Have a super social weekend planned again but head back to Canada on Monday to normality! Really missed my hot yoga class, which I find really makes my back strong and able to do other activities better.

Thanks Amazon, appreciate the advise. Really enjoying seeing all my friends though, although the weather is rubbish here in Holland. Is everyone else having a nice summer?

Good morning from a frosty Melbourne.
Jo I try to swim at least 3 times a week and only use the gym for its pool. I think I hate being told what to do, so avoid classes! I also think you are better walking (on the flat best for knees) until the weight has gone. Jogging would be way too stressful on your knees and hips at this point. I agree with Happy re starting slowly, but I think with your history of your hip it would be much safer just to walk. You will still get the benefits without stressing the joints.
I love Bircher Meusli too Amazon (thanks for the porage explanation Happy, had me confused too!), but lately I have been having home made kefir poured over some chopped fruit (strawberries, kiwi etc) and just a sprinking of oats, nuts and seeds. Way lower in cals and still satisfies me. Last time we were at Lorne the breakfast buffet at the hotel had the most amazing bircher and I could have eaten it all day. One of my ‘special occasion’ foods I think!
Jo I am meeting a friend at the Piggery Cafe at Burnham Beeches in the Dandenongs today – the place I took you in Feb. I think we will be sitting inside in this freezing weather!

    Excellent breakfast choice, Nama โ˜บ
Burcher muesli is usually made with fruit juice and yoghurt. Clearly bought Bircher (eg in breakfast bars) is never a healthy option. The fruit juice and yoghurt would almost definitely be high in sugar.
We went through the full spectrum of weather on our way home yesterday. .. sunny walk on the beach (water 22deg), a late lunch with good Hunter white in golden sunshine overlooking the Hunter River, masses of rainbows, then torrential rain (at last) as we headed home. Cold and wet at home, sitting by a cosy fire with cockatoos screeching at each other in the dark and wet. They were obviously wondering what rain is!!!
Happy to fast today to check my weekend appetite ๐Ÿ˜‰ P

    Hello,
The day was so beautiful here! Warm and comfortable. I took Sasha for an early walk and after I went to my Yoga in which I am guessing and hoping because I am lighter things feels right ๐Ÿ‘
It’s very nice to hear you guys coming forward with nice reminders for the newcomers… Very refreshing tough and positive.

The first time I heard the word “birchermรผesli” I had no idea was they were talking about. Happens that Dr Bircher a nutricionist and physician in Bern, Switzerland introduced it to his pacients. Happen that I am surrounded by Swiss and that’s why I know the different types.
My favorite way it’s soaked oats, flex and chia overnight on my kefir and the day after add berries and nuts. Whatever I have available. In Switzerlabd it tasked so rich! I wonder if there is any whipped cream and it sounds like dessert. Anyway it’s delicious!

Jo – I think as kids are 50/50 so you are inheriting the best of north world.

Anaide – sorry for your loss! I am so sure you thing about your son everyday and gone so young. May God give you comfort.
I am aware of how difficult it is in Brazil right now. I was there in March for my very private 50th I didn’t feel comfortable at all. Let’s hope and pray that things turn around and you go visit your girl in Europe. She is very special ๐Ÿ™.
    Tomorrow it’s a better day ๐Ÿ˜
    Xoxo
    B

Lots of typos ๐Ÿ˜ญ Hope you guys get the picture ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

    Morning All,

Anaide- thinking if you in your grief. It’s very hard to focus when you are depressed, I know, I took years to get over the loss of my mother, still think of her daily but it’s less painful now. Make your son proud, get to your goal and find some happiness in success. It will be a tough journey but we are here with you.

Well I eventually got hungry at 3.30 pm yesterday so had my prawn salad. I had some soup at 8 pm as I was only a little peckish then but wanted to sleep well. It’s horrible waking in the night hungry, I can never get back to sleep.Interesting how my ‘hunger dragon’ has been tamed through long term fasting. This new plan could work for me.

Nama- my hip has not been an issue for quite awhile now, the acupuncture really helped. I think you are right, swimming would be a better decision. However I went to the gym for a visit yesterday and just could not get excited about signing up. I looked around at all the miserable faces and dark rooms and decided it wasn’t for me. They have redecorated it to look very masculine and dreary replacing bright blue carpet with black spongy floor tiles. The equipment is all new too but did not tempt me. I prefer to be walking outside, I need that sun on my face(if we ever get any this summer)I will check out the local pool at the weekend.

Fasting today, one hour power walk planned with dogs plus indoor bowls game then finally loads of housework all afternoon before my 2nd games night, hosted here. I have 11 ladies attending. We are going to play Canasta and The Really Nasty Horse Race board game. There will be biscuits but I won’t be having them. Like bowls the U3A meets all include tea and biscuits. If I really struggle with temptation at the end of a fast day I will have an apple, better that than a biscuit, I know I wouldn’t stop at one biscuit especially stem ginger cookies.

Bought the ‘apple cider vinegar’ yesterday, plus linseed(flax). I may soak some oats in milk tonight for Bircher muesli tomorrow. I have some berries and nuts to add too. I have a game in the afternoon so will eat about 12.

    Be strong people.
