Happy Monday letโ€™s get our fast on !!
AO I bet you had a better sleep in your own bed and a cuppa from your favourite mug thatโ€™s a good start and AO able to tend with TLC Hi ply yes 18/6 19/5 and 4-3 is a fat burning combo trust me actually the front page from Did I Enrich Today from the book download has heaps of information to the FAQ is a good place to start stories and the skinny on fast-5.
I have had to re work the exercise component of this way of life due to the freezing cold wet and windy conditions now so back to running on the mini trampoline with 1kg hand weights for one hour morning and night and on reflection probably a better mid riff toning option anyway as I tend to tense my tummy muscles whilst twisting my core & running (yes you do read correctly ๐Ÿ˜† ) anyway 19/5 daily and 5-2 fast Monday and Thursday evening meal only thatโ€™s me to maintain and as most of you cool fast cats would know I have dabbled in the EODD which is one 500cal meal or 100cal snack and a 400cal meal on a fast day then whatever you fancy on a feast day or a blend of 5-2 through that together with fast-5 and I did just have a fortnight of 20/4 and found just the one eating occasion (the evening meal) perfectly doable Sarah along the path of knowledge on my study of one IF seems to tick all the boxes for me and I will list my top 8 reasons why this way of life is the only way of life for me now to infinity and beyond. ๐Ÿ˜† (I did borrow that from the film toy story we did have the grandkids over for the weekend)

    Good morning/evening All,
You can have milk in your coffe or tea when you are doing 19/5, it is still a drink. A milky latte may be taking things a bit far but a drop of skimmed milk is fine. I always have the first hot drink of the day with skimmed milk then switch to green tea. Honey and camomile is my favourite. Ended up with last minute lunch and dinner invitation so fast day cancelled. Didn’t go mad but ate 1500 cals rather than 500.
It was so good spending time with my son and his girlfriend.
I am very tired so I am getting an early night.

Enjoy your Bank Holiday Monday All

    Morning/Evening,

I’ve been reading quick all post but no time for comments! There are sad stories:pains, aches; happy stories: love again, gardening, socializing, singing, cooking; challenges: aspertime, addiction, fasting for 4 days… And alien abduction :() I LOL w/ the last one.

My last 3 glasses of wine were exactly last Sunday 8 days ago! We were invited and my girlfriends drinks a lot and gets drunk all the time and the couple fights. My husband isn’t to happy but they are going through a bad financial crisis and this is the excuse to forget problems. Starting on that Monday I decided to put my scale away because of fear and disappointment and go back on it in one month. My fasting Monday wasn’t bad and i am moving everyday for real. On Friady I finally found out what hunger pangs is. Also I was very tired, headaches, heart burn but I made through the day. The entire week I tried to eat within limits and drink lots of water.
Tomorrow is Memorial Day here and we are invited to a neighbors party! I told my husband that we’ll go for only 2 hours and my wine allowance is 2 glasses.
This week’s FD will be on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Also trying to avoid self sabotaging behavior and trying to understand how to behave with my next set of guests in my house and traveling in July here, August in Brazil and my vacation in September.
It’s gonna be all right…I am tired of being a loser and a finder of what I’ve previously had lost (yo yo effect).
Also processing not to be to hard on myself ๐Ÿ™‚

    Peace to you all,
    B

    hi RT

Love your posts, as ever ๐Ÿ˜† Keep it up. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Freezing our backsides here, was below zero overnight, and now struggling to stay on 10C today. Hate it when the blue sky vanishes.

Will be better here tomorrow when the sun comes out again. However, decided to postpone the fast until I’m in sunny warm Brisbane tomorrow.

I made a slow cooking meat and veg casserole overnight. I had forgotten how wonderful it is to wake up to the smell of a tender beef casserole. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    Cheers, Bay

Hi again, am having my few mins on computer to post. Typing 1 handed is so slow. Have made contact with the relevant council re accident and reported the problem. Seeing the specialist again next Tuesday so hoping for a clearance then, at least partially.

I know what I want to say but by the time I get ready to start typing I’ve forgotten what it was, nevermind once I can use my other hand all will be back to normal (plus I keep dozing off mid sentence not fully but enough to be a dopey dora lol ๐Ÿ˜€ )

    Morning/evening all.

AO, it’s good to hear from you, take it easy and give that arm a chance to heal properly before you start dashing around again Smiley

HCB, that’s the way to do it, start over, don’t beat yourself up and try not to allow your social life to sabotage things. You’ll get there.

I love RTs top 8. I have one more that IMO is very important, liking the person you see when you look in the mirror.

Bay, I always forget that it does get cold in Australia as I’ve only been there in the height of summer, and of course once the extra insulation has disappeared from the body, we feel the cold more. I’m sure the slow cooked beef will warm you up.

I always have milk in my tea and coffee. There are various schools of thought on what actually breaks a fast, which varies between zero and 40-50 calories. Considering what a sophisticated machine the body is surely the amount of energy expended to take the body out of fasting mode would have to be exceeded by the amount taken in, so I find it hard to believe that a dash of milk in my tea would do it especially if I’m dashing around getting ready to go to the gym or out walking.
I wonder if it has been researched properly, or the different schools of thought on it are just opinion.

It is a lovely morning but I don’t think it is going to last.
My leg and back are still sore so another day of rest with some gentle stretching is in order and I’ll resume exercising tomorrow.

Have a great BH in the NH, and a good evening in the SH ๐Ÿ˜›

    Amazon

    NH=UK?

    Good Morning everyone,

Another long and uncomfortable night even after pain killers and with two hot water bottles and gel patch. I am beginning to think even walking is going to be a pursuit I may need to give up to get pain relief. So unfair.

HCB- it can be very tough in the first three months. My body was very unhappy with the changes made, feeling cold, lots of headaches, extremely bad tempered. But I got through it and most of my friends are still talking to me. Just keep going.

AO-that anaesthetic can take a while to wear off, I was dosy for two weeks after my last ankle operation. I remember having an arm out of action, dressing is a real chore, most other activities pretty difficult, sleep horrendous. Sounds like you are managing the pain.

I am not going to the gym today as I still have lots of garden pots to do. I need to have a weed free cheerful area to sit in and view from my bedroom window. Peace personified. Weather looks tolerable but not great.

Playing bowls tonight then preparing a light meal for family at my place so they can admire my garden work and help me shift some earth.

Have fun keep moving( if it doesn’t hurt) if not chill with a glass of( your choice)

Wiwi, Northern Hemisphere. I believe it is a public holiday in other places beside England ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Amazon
Yes it’s a holiday in the US and UK and sort of is in France. It’s a funny story and oh so French. It’s Whitsun/Pentecost today. It used to give people to get home after the whitsun(Sunday) parades when they were Catholic.. Anyway in 2003 after the terrible drought where 12K mainly old people died, the govt decided that people would work today and their pay would go to a solidarity fund. However it’s the bull running days in the streets of Nรฎmes and Montpellier and people objected to working that day (very French to object to working any day in fact). So the govt made it an optional holiday. I was attached to the university in Lyon without being a civil sevant, and I always used to work. Now French people must work 1 minute more a day to put into the solidarity fund, and keep their BH.
My Brit husband finds that in spite of the proximity to the UK, the two countries are so different. There is not even an English word for “dรฉfรฉrier” which means to remove from the calendar what used to be a public holiday.
You must forgive my NZishness, small country, must assert oneself. As the Aussies say, we are well-balance. We have a chip on each shoulder. Sorry Barata,
    Wiwi

Public holidays all seem to have their roots in either religion or politics. In Sri Lanka they have 24 including 13 full moon days which are apparently to do with Buddhism. When I was there it seemed to be an excuse to spend time with the family and/or get drunk. Sounds like a public holiday in most parts of the world ๐Ÿ˜†
I have 365 holiday days per annum and every 4th year I get an extra one ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Morning/evening all,

Yes Amazon, it CAN get cold down here! Its not even officially winter for a few days but we have had some really crisp days and nights and I am really feeling it, minus personal insulation! Husband thinks I am just being contrary as I usually complain in Summer and love the cold, but lately I just cant get warm. Of course Bay’s climate in Canberra is seriously cold in Winter, but Melbourne can get frosts too!

We had a lovely 6 Km walk again this morning, my throbbing achilles reminds me! No treatment seems to fix it, but I dont want to stop walking either! Looking forward to a swim tomorrow. Started 19/5 seriously today, I like the mental image of a window opening and closing! Jojo the guy that RT recommends (Bert) says no milk in your tea/coffee outside the 5 hours, hence the talk of black coffee. However, after 2 black coffees this morning (one professionally made!) I think I will save my coffees for the 5 hour window and make do with black tea, which I don’t mind. I am going to stick with this plan (including 4:3) for a few weeks to assess it properly as my losses have really slowed and its frustrating as you all know. I never would have believed I could do 4:3 initially, found it felt like I was fasting all the time, but its easy now!

Enjoy your holiday and your gardening etc up there, dont strain any more muscles!

    Hi

So Sri Lankans like not working too, Amazon! Lovely island, I spent a few weeks there some years ago.
Yes I am also trying to follow Bert Herring’s 19:5 strictly, Nama and in fact, I really like it. His explanation of limbic hunger, alias the hunger dragon is very clear and makes sense. However I guess it’s our bodies that tell us. So no milk in tea before breaking the fast suits me. Do you fast from 10pm to 5pm as he suggests? I can’t- 5pm is too late, I do 8pm to 3pm. It’s your first day, so reactions will be interesting.
    XX Wiwi

    Hi Wiwi,

I agree about the descriptions of hunger, interesting. I did 3 till 8pm today as had been walking, then bought a truck load of fresh fruit and veg on my way home and hunger overtook me when I finally got it all put away. But stopping at 8pm was ok, after the bread I ate yesterday I expected to be hungry today! An early night I think. I will probably vary the 5 hr window according to days plans, but 5pm till 10pm would probably suit me better as I am usually a night owl. I had to give it a try, with the results you others all seem to be getting!

    Hi Nama,
I am happy enough with the perceived benefits of fasting from following 5:2 so the shorter eating window is all about limiting my intake. I am now in the habit of not eating until midday on most days, and rarely eat dinner later than 6pm unless I go out, so it is working well for me. I also like to get up and get on with things whether it is going to the gym, shopping, housework or gardening as if I sit down and decide to do it later it doesn’t get done. As we all know, being busy takes our minds away from food so it also fits in with the way I like to do things.
My next project is to become more active after lunch and in the evenings, as I don’t always do enough and boredom is the enemy.

I am really struggling at the moment and it is interesting as I have never though of myself as a comfort eater. I am doing well at keeping away from the wine rack though. My will might be weak at the moment but my determination remains strong and I know that I’ll get to goal but the journey will just be a little longer than anticipated.

Will pop in later to post ..

    Just wanted to say

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARATA ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

    Wee xx

    Hi Amazon,

I dont think you really lack willpower if you are able to keep to a limited eating window. But the “cheats” we indulge in are harder to resist at some times aren’t they? Some days the Peanut Butter can whisper and I hear it, other days it can yell at me and I turn a deaf ear! If you are managing to resist the vino then surely that is a good thing? RTs oft quoted “easier to not start than to stop….”(or similar) is a big factor I think.

I wrote something about will power but my comments vanished ๐Ÿ™
Vino – I am proud to say that today is # 9 w/o it. I had terrible cravings last week for a drink and the time is 5pm. Our brain plays a funny rewarding game. If would no indulging on wine something ridiculous else.
The problem it’s not the Will power! It is sticking with it and who makes you accountable for your acts. Later we have a barbecue and my splurge will be only 2 glasses … Before I want more will leave. There is no vino in my house at the moment.

    Hello all

I am at last beginning to recover after the worst cold/flu- whatever for 15 years. It really knocked me out. I still have the nasty cold part and a bit of a cough but at least the aches have gone and I am feeling a lot better in myself. The problem now is that OH has got it, so it’s a role reversal and I am playing Florence Nightingale this week.

I made some nice comforting vegetable soup for lunch with homemade bread. I don’t know why I had any of the bread, as I can’t taste anything at the moment, so it was a very stupid waste of calories! I have lost 3lbs since I have been ill, though hoped it might have been more, but at least it puts me in the right frame of mind to lose the final 7 to my goal.

Happy Bank Holiday to those who are having one. Interesting post on the French one from Wiwi. In this part of the world it is an age old tradition on what was Whit Monday but now Spring Bank Holiday Monday, to hold a cheese rolling contest at one of out local beauty spots. Various foolhardy people chase a Double Gloucester cheese down a very steep hill and the winner takes the cheese as the prize. It usually results in an assortment of sprained ankles and broken arms, and I think it was actually banned for a few years in the name of health and safety, but I think local outcry brought it back again.

Jojo – so sorry to hear you are still in such pain. I think you are doing the right thing having a complete rest from any strenuous activity for a while and give the body a rest – galling as that might be.

AO – wishing you a speedy recovery too.

Happy Birthday Barata. Hope you had a lovely day, as I’m guessing it’s night time there now.

HCB – I can recommend The Fast Diet and The Cook Book, although there is a revised Fast Diet which came out this year. I haven’t read it, so I don’t know how different it is from the original.

Have a good one all. I’m not up to fasting at the moment but am trying to eat sensibly and take advantage of the fact that I can’t taste anything. Still annoyed with myself for eating that bread though …!

    Good morning fellow losers!

Barata, hope you had a lovely day yesterday.

Wee, ditto for your grand-daughter’s birthday.

AO, good to hear from you.

Smiffy, glad to hear you’re getting better. Sadly, almost inevitable that the bug goes through the household. Take it easy being Florence Nightingale since you’re not yet fully recovered. You ask why you ate the bread, when you can’t taste anything yet? Definitely one of life’s great questions but sometimes I find my mouth needs it, rather than my stomach or my soul. Who knows why?

Amazon, sorry to hear of your struggles. I can only quote SAMM and recommend you focus on what’s currently doable and not beat yourself up. You’ve had a rough time recently and are almost certainly still dealing with it. Look after yourself.

Jojo, as one who has been almost incapacitated by dodgy knees, I sympathise with your frustrations resulting from forced inactivity. Rest from strenuous activities may not improve things in the short term but may prevent longer-term damage, especially as you don’t seem to have had a satisfactory medical diagnosis yet.

Not much to report since my last post. Am enjoying the Fast-5 book when I get time to read – thanks again RT for the link. OK FD yesterday with 90′ of yoga my joyful point.

Was not looking forward to coming to work as a colleague last Wednesday was rather personally unpleasant but he seems to have calmed down and was at least civil yesterday. His criticism was totally unjustified (IMO of course) and I tried to remind myself that it was because he sees me as a threat to his formerly very comfortable job where he did exactly as he pleased and was accountable to no-one. We had a restructure about a year ago and the spotlight of our new boss has now fallen on his performance (or lack) and he feels threatened because he is being made to actually do the work he is paid to do. Our boss’s line is that he clearly has too much to do, evidenced by the huge backlog of work and I was asked to take over some of his domain. No wonder he feels threatened! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Take care all and keep up the good work. n xxx

Thanks to you all for the birthday wishes. Not a holiday here yesterday, unfortunately, but we do get next Monday off – the official Queens’ Birthday Weekend (not even for her real one!)

We are currently enjoying the southerly tail of the largest storm on the planet (read it on the internet, so it must be true), whipping up snow to low levels in the south.

Jojo, really horrible to hear you about your knees. Hope they are improving with rest.

SAMM, where have you been? The search parties have been scouring the countryside for you!

    Sorry about the double-up

    Good Morning All,
Yes I know it is a bit of an early start. These days I am lucky if I get three hours sleep. Just having a nice cuppa, with milk( to hell with what the book says) I never was a one for strict anything, hence that’s probably why I got obese in the first place. I am not proud of it. I am able to give up alcohol(doesn’t even tempt me most days even when all around me are drinking) I do believe it is more tempting when there is a hot climate. You just get fed up with water or soft drinks, strange that I don’t feel the same about gin and tonic? I have a close personal friend who is an alcoholic, she can be very unpleasant (verbally) when drunk so I don’t see it’s appeal as many do, I have apologised on her behalf and driven her home once too often. I still love her, we have been friends for 40 years but I don’t make excuses for her addiction or behaviour. She is very stubborn and refuses to consider not drinking everyday fro 2 pm to 11 pm, but she drinks loads of water between 8 am and 2 pm thereby ensuring her liver function health. At the end of the day we are not so different, I was addicted to food.

Having seen the Doctor again I accept that physical rest is essential. I feel very old right now with pulled muscles, stiff painful joints, it’s miserable. A friend suggested mal nurishment as the cause of my issues. I explained that I have never eaten so healthily. But she has a point, maybe there just isn’t enough fat. I am going to make a point of increasing this on non fast days. Anyone else noticed an increase in back ache, joint problems, pulled muscles?

Samm – where are you when I need you, I know you will have some research on long term fasting and its side effects. I am still thinking of you daily buddy and hope all is well with you?

I agree that 4:3 and 19/5 is the ultimate fasting regime for long term success( 2 lb per week loss if no cheats) then maintenance 5:2 and 600 cals( non fast days 1500 cals) it’s a winner. Plus walking daily 15,000 steps.

Resting today- hooray- off to buy some bacon.

    Hi Jojo,

So sorry to hear about your struggles with your pain. I am sure all the minor aches etc are just age related that most of us get, you are extra aware of them as you are feeling down about your more serious issues with your hip and knees. I think the suggestion re malnutrition is completely misguided, it sounds to me you eat lots of good stuff eg all the veg in your soup and all the fish. A bit of extra fat wont do any harm though, it really helps with satiety. Hopefully the enforced rest will help and if you follow the docs orders with rest and anti inflammatories and the pain is not significantly better, then surely you have a right to demand more tests/imaging? I just had a lovely swim this morning. I know you enjoy swimming, maybe make that your main form of exercise at present? I think it could only do you good. Enjoy the bacon! xx

    Morning All,

Lovely long weekend, dry and mostly warm. Hoping summer isn’t too warm though as I can’t open the bedroom window for a few months…. House martins are nest building in the window recess, and it’s already a bit stuffy in there!

I spent most of the weekend playing in the dirt again Nama! Back to work today though, perhaps I should keep a pot of soil on my desk and stir it occasionally?

Jojo, I hope you get your problems sorted. Living with pain, incapacitated, and not sleeping enough is not a good way to live.

I’m afraid your hard drinking friend is fooling herself if she thinks drinking plenty of water offsets the damage from her daily drinking. It doesn’t. Suggest she watches last week’s Horizon – Is binge drinking really that bad for you? The answer is yes! And actually even moderate daily drinking isn’t too clever…

Smiffy, sorry to hear you’re having to nurse OH before you’re fully recovered. If he’s like my OH, he’ll be more ill than you were though… ๐Ÿ™‚

AO, hope you’re recovering nicely, and not too impatient with your period of enforced rest!

No fasting today, perhaps later in the week. Will see what the weight does.

How weird. Between my first post and second, I swear I saw something from SAMM, hence my response. But now it’s gone. And I was at work – no alcohol involved. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Morning/evening all.
Another sunny and breezy morning. I overslept this morning so it is too late for the gym as I have timed tickets for an exhibition this afternoon.
My back feels much better after wearing a hear pack all day yesterday, and I’ve been takin anti inflammatories. I’m hoping it continues to improve and I can get back to my normal routine by the end of the week.

Nicky, thanks for your kind words. I am being kind to myself as there is nothing one can do to speed up getting over a bereavement, but I didn’t realise I was capable of comfort eating. Now I am aware, I can take steps to do something else when the urge to raid the larder occurs. Fortunately life is getting busier and there are lots of opportunities to go out and enjoy the company of others and I’m trying to say yes to every invitation.
The downside of this has been that most of the outings recently have involved eating and drinking, so I’m going to try to get back to walks, cinema, galleries and museums.
I usually write a menu plan and that seems to have gone by the wayside, so I’m going to start doing that again which helps keep me on the straight and narrow on non fast days.

Jojo, IMHO you ahould give up all exercise apart from swimming and dog walking for a month and see if there is any improvement in your pain. I think you should see your GP and rather than ask for tests, push for a definitive diagnosis and/or a second opinion on the cause of the pain. It sounds like arthritis to me and if it is, a complete rest would help it settle and ease the pain, then you can investigate ways to minimise and control the pain and strengthen the ligaments and muscles that surround the joint with physiotherapy.
I know being idle is not in your nature, and you love exercising but you don’t want to be in such pain when you go on your big trip later in the year so it needs ro be tackled now.

Hi to everyone else, have a great day/evening.

    Heat pack!!!!

Drinking water to mitigate drinking copious amounts of alcohol is a waste of time as it does not prevent liver damage. If it did there would be no such thing as ALD – alcoholic liver disease.

Hi everyone slowly managing pain/medications better.

RT a little while ago you (well from memory I think it was you) put up a link to a book or ebook which was free would you please share again as I would like to read it (I meant to save it down but never got around to it and now I can’t find it again).

Drinking lots of water but only eating minimal amounts as just not hungry but making sure I eat at least once per day as otherwise meds will bind me up badly (not bound atm).

Love catching up with you all. Chat more later ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello,
I was truly faithful to my goal last night! Had my 2 glasses of wine,
resisted the wonderful food with what I wanted and portion control and for
sweets my husband is a pastry chef so he brough in a Black Forest cake that
people went nuts but for me I decided to have some fruit with a small piece of
    cheese.
My Girlfriend that drinks too much and justifies offsetting with water
was there as well. Just like your Girlfriend Jojo I like and respect her but
loves having happy hours which is not working for me. Amazon I think said
something I also agree I don’t see the point or everybody trying to justify the
health benefits of alcohol. It causes more harm then good!

    Jojo I know you
and the group are very updated and intelligent! For years I was on fat free and
sugar free diet (fake sugar/aspartame) and this is proven not to work anymore.
We need the good fat and good sugars to avoid hunger and sugar cravings. We
fight fat with good fat! I make my own fermented milk (kefir) and fermented
vegetables (sauerkraut) to rebuild my gut! Coconut oil, Ghee, avocado, nuts and
seeds helps to control inflammation in the body. I see many of in the group are
very active it is a shame with all this pain and aches. I just ordered
magnseium to help me sleep and muscle cramps.

Today is FD so I had coffee w/
1/2 tbsp of coconut butter and ghee and stevia on my coffee and off to some
cardio and yoga later. The food will be quinoa with beans I guess.

    xoxoxox
    there wherever you are

    Good Evening Friends,
I am resting to repair my injured tendon and I will be swimming instead of usual sports Nama, but not this week. I will continue with bowls but have changed my delivery to avoid putting weight on my right knee. Seems to be working ok. Steps count in bowls is very low, under 1000 in a 2 hour game. I am committed to weekly coastal walk for two hours but other walks(dog) will be under 1 hour( but this week they are staying with my daughter so I can rest) I am stopping badminton, yoga, weights and dance class – no choice, I am cancelling my gym membership at the end of July. I am really going to have to watch my diet as pain killers and a restricted amount of exercise is a bad combination. But realistically weight loss can only help my joints so I need to focus and beat this situation. Enjoying salmon salad and homemade soups. I am now researching good fats and recommended daily consumption. Yes I am frustrated but I bounce back quickly I am a positive person and I know I need to get these issues sorted out before my trip to Australia and New Zealand, at the very least I need to get a balance of exercise and pain management.

Spent my time in the garden today, final batch of potting up and a little sweeping and tidying, nothing too arduous. Playing cards with chums tonight.

As for my friend and her alcohol and water drinking, her liver tests (done every six months) are still normal so it does seem to work for her. Because she was brought up in a pub she was aware of the dangers of drinking early. Facts are facts, her health is good, she is rarely ill, even her weight is under control. She does have slightly high blood pressure but I put that down to her being a control freak and being over 50. She doesn’t claim that her drinking is good for her but she feels she is limiting the damage it does and she appears to be succeeding. She is also very active and walks her dog daily in the mountains. I find it hard to keep up with her when hiking.

    Hi Jojo.
A hard decision to cut out most of your exercise for a while but in the long run I don’t see how that amount of rest can fail to improve things for you. I have no doubt that you’ll find something that interests you to keep yourself occupied until you can take up more exercise again.
I’ve been trying to eat more fat and even less carbs and sugar. Oily fish, butter, cheese, avocado, full fat yoghurt have all found a regular place in the fridge. Unfortunately my favoured vehicle for butter delivery is still bread!

I’ve been out with a friend today and all I had was two coffees despite the amazing display of food on display in both coffee shops. This is the best and easiest FD for several weeks which makes me very happy.

Are you still planning on going to Scotland?

Been dozing since 1am until just now (3am) and have just taken pain relief before it gets so very bad and at least it’s a different / healing kind of pain so becomes more bearable.

Jojo so sad to hear you’re suffering too at least with mine there will be an end date (another 4 – 8 weeks as I never believe the strict 6 weeks bizzo they always say lol ).

Wee I hope Mr Wee is mending now and that Mr Wee Snr is more his chirpy self again (I really DO understand how draining it can be emotionally as well as mentally).

Good to hear from everyone – please excuse me for not listing you all – but would love to hear from SAMM and Hermaj as haven’t heard from either of them for a while.

    Chat later ๐Ÿ˜€ AO xx

    Hello all

Thanks Nicky and Happy – it really is two steps forward and three back. Energy levels very low, and yesterday I got the signs of only the second migraine I have had in my entire life. Luckily I recognised the symptoms – strange lights before my eyes and unable to focus, and went to bed with some strong painkillers and slept for a couple of hours. That seemed to do the trick but really buggered up my afternoon.

A keen gardener like you Happy, I was all set to plant out my courgettes and pot up tomatoes and cucumbers, along with putting geraniums, petunias and lobelia in some of my patio pots. As for the weeding…! Well, today is another day and I hope to get out there, in between nursing OH, who I have to say has been very brave!!! You’re not wrong Happy – although he does acknowledge that he hadn’t realised how ill I had been until he got it himself!

I do intend to pace myself, I realise it would be silly to overdo things before I am totally well.

We also have a few families of house martins, Happy. We have some building work going on a the moment and thought we would have to bring it to a halt because of one of the nests being built in the wrong place. The builder thought we were mad! Luckily the birds seem to have abandoned their own building plans for that particular location. Probably driven out by the sound of our chaps singing along to Radio 2 all day!

AO – I hope you continue to make a good recovery.

Amazon – having lost a brother, father and husband over the past 11 years, I do feel for you. It’s a cliche, but time is a wonderful healer. The heart never mends but the pain does diminish.

Jojo – hope you are taking it easy.

RT – our very own 007 eh? How exciting, though I like to think of you as more of a Sean Connery.

Have a good one all. It’s looking like a nice day here.

    Morning All,
Hope everyone is pain free and happy today. HCB – sounds like you are firing on all cylinders, very jealous. RT – those links didn’t work for me, I will try again later. AussieO I am determined that this pain will not be for the rest of my life, I will change everything to be pain free but first it needs to be my weight- Frustrating or what!

Amazon – I eat all those foods too but what % is the correct one for muscle repair and building? I suspect it is much higher than we can have on both fast and non fast days.

Barata- you probably opened the page on 1 where Samm had posted, I have done the same myself. I wished he would come back I really miss him. He has taken breaks before so I am hoping he returns. I am very worried about him and his family especially as we know his wife was diagnosed with cancer. I know he wouldn’t mind me explaining this as it is probably the cause for his absence.

Happy- it’s great to be in the garden again, makes me feel alive even if it is bloody hard work. Sadly no growing food for me this year as I am moving in the summer then travelling. I shall miss it.
Nama- Trust me I will persist with Doctors until I get a definitive diagnosis of hip pain. Meanwhile I will follow advice and hope it works. Like you I love swimming. Did you do anything exciting for your birthday?
NickyF, Smiffy and Wiwi, hope you are all losing- you inspire me with your upbeat chatter even when life kicks you in the groin.
Not good news on the scale this morning, up 3 lbs. I know this is side effects due to painkillers but I need to counteract this as it is going to be my way of life for six weeks of daily and nightly 1000mg pain relief. At least I am sleeping relatively well. But I cannot afford weekly gains, no way!
I have thought of buying a softer mattress so there is not so much pressure on the hip joint. Also going on a totally liquid diet to alleviate constipation. Anyone tried this? My usual high fibre is not working well and I am retaining fluid.
    Suggestions?
Off to do some bowls practise as I have a match this afternoon. Started with porridge today and I will have soup for lunch, followed by salmon salad as I have an early window today. 7 am until 12. Then water until 7 pm. no choir tonight so tucking myself up on the sofa with a good book. Heaven.

Jojo, you might be right about viewing the first page, but it came when I was posting the first of my two, so ๐Ÿ˜ . My heart goes out to you coping with the pain, and the weight effects of the painkillers. And three hours of sleep? ๐Ÿ™ . Get well, my dear. We need you fit to cope with the Wellington hills, don’t we Wiwi?

I found the mattresses in England soooo hard. We’re women, we’re not flat! Soft is good. The best was the waterbed, when they were in vogue, but when one of us is half the weight of the other, the displacement is, shall we say, skewed. ๐Ÿ™‚ So we replaced that when we came home from Milton Keynes – gosh, twelve years ago. What about Metamucil for the constipation?

Enjoy your gardening in the NH. We have had some very cold weather (zero at the station yesterday am.)

    Hi all,

Thanks for asking Jojo, but my birthday was in Feb – it was Barata’s this week you duffer! I think a new mattress is a great idea. I bought a new one a few years ago and it is heavenly to sleep on. Down here they are called “pillowtop” mattresses – usual underneath, with pocketed springs, plus a top layer (attached) about 2in thick filled with memory foam. Best sleep ever and was useful when I had trouble sleeping with a hip bursa. Also do the old pillow b/w your knees, that is so comfy when your knees are sore. Remember when you were 8 months pregnant, similar effect just no baby! Remember I am a nurse – years ago we were taught to make people comfy in bed!!

Funny story but true: I wanted a new mattress and husband disagreed, said existing one was perfectly ok. So I was very devious. He went to China on business for a few weeks and while he was away I bought one, had it delivered and didn’t mention it when he came home. He never noticed and still doesn’t know!! Needless to say he is a healthy weight with no aches and pains, so probably doesn’t need the memory foam as much as me!

I dont think a liquid diet is the solution to constipation – you will feel more constipated than ever as there is no fibre coming thru. I find the right fruit is the best, whatever works for you. Pears or kiwi fruit do it for me, with lots of water. Metamucil works too but I much prefer fruit. Dont panic about the 3lb, that wont be fat. Your digestion will be missing the exercise. I guess you just have to look at the ‘big picture’ at present.

Great to hear your pain is under control AO, sounds like you are nicely relaxed with your pain killers. Make the most of the rest! The rest of the world will just have to cope without you.

And great to hear from you Smiffy, sounds like you really had the ‘flu’, much worse than a cold. And a cold can make you feel bad enough. Your pots sound lovely too, I am so jealous of all you NH gardeners at present. Lobelias are one of my favourites, anything blue actually, with a bit of yellow nearby!

Happy the pot of dirt on your desk sounds like lateral thinking!! You would have to stick your fingers in it to touch the necessary microbes though! Your chickens might want to come inside too…
I had to google Housemartins. We have swallows but a bit different. I think it is fantastic that you (or Smiffy) wont disturb them, I hope they reward you with babies.

Thanks for the second link RT, I will watch it soon. Working my way thru the book. I am finding the 19/5 ok, it makes me feel I am doing more to shift last few kgs, time will tell. Don’t get a big head with Smiffy thinking you are more of a Sean Connery type! A few weeks ago they were calling you Russell Crowe! I hope you have had a chance to enjoy Rockhampton, a very different climate to Adelaide!

Off to bed, I find early nights mandatory on fast days, especially after having walked another 6km today, Cheers all xx

    Afternoon all.
It is a beautiful day here.
I had a good workout at the gym this morning. I took it easy as my back is still a bit stiif but all was well. It was very quiet there and I had a lovely swim with only one other in the pool.

Jojo, I know what you mean about getting enough fat without having too many calories. It is a bit of a juggling act. I had problems with constipation a couple of months ago and I resorted to Dulcolax then took a look at what I was eating and doubled the amount of cabbage, leafy veg and brassicas and increased the amount of fresh fruit I was eating, which has solved the problem.

Smiffy, poor you. I have a friend who suffers from migraine and if she doesn’t do something as soon as the first sign appears she is ill for days. Thank goodness you recognised what was happening and acted quickly.
I’ve not had a cold since I have up work and I count myslef very lucky as they can be so debilitating.
Thanks for your kind words, everyone has been so nice it has made things a bit easier. I know that in time I’ll be OK and I am doing everything I can to be positive and get on with life.
As for mattresses, I have a very firm orthopaedic mattress which was fabulous until I lost weight and I am going to have to replace it!
Barata, apologies for not wishing you a happy birthday, I kept meaning to and then forgetting.

Have a good one everbody ๐Ÿ˜›

Hi Amazon. Lovely to have the “old” Amazon almost back, we need you around here! I agree re the cabbage, green veg etc – I eat a lot of coleslaw and even enjoy it without dressing now!
Maybe you and Jojo can buy a mattress together and get a “two for one” special!

    Hi Nama,
Thanks, I’m feeling much better and am lucky enough to have lots of support.

I’m about to make coleslaw. I use a mixture of good quality mayo and yoghurt for the dressing, and it is very good if I say so myself.

This time of year is great for veggies as there are lots of leafy greens around plus asparagus, sprouting broccholi, courgettes, and broad beans and peas on the way. Lots of lovely fruit including English strawberries, and soft fruits such as peaches, yum, yum!
I am making a courgette frittata for dinner with avocado salad and coleslaw. It is not a FD today but I’m on a mission to eat as healthily as possible, and when the weather is good, salads are perfect. If it stays dry, I’m going to be firing up the BBQ at the weekend ๐Ÿ˜›

Jojo, et al, re: regularity, there is an herbal tea I use on occasion, very gentle but does the job. I drink a cup at night. It’s called “Smooth Move” made by Traditional Medicinals and available on Amazon. The active ingredients are senna and licorice root. Tastes pretty good!
