  • Good afternoon.

I restart 5:2 on Monday morning. It worked before; it will work again.

This time it’s a lifestyle, not one more diet! In other words, an attitude adjustment. I just ordered the revised Fast Diet.

    Anyone else fasting on Monday?

I am Ella & I’m also from the U.S. I’ve been doing 5:2 (6:1 in December) since Oct. and have lost about 8 pounds. I feel great at my current weight, but I’d like to see if I can lose 5 more. What are your goals? I have a Mexico spring break trip that is my current motivation…

I meant hi Ella, not I am Ella 🙂

Good morning Emily! It sounds like you are doing great on 5:2. My goal is to just keep losing weight throughout 2015, with no rush or time limit to reach a healthy BMI. I am going to enjoy the ride!

Hi Ella, I’m also from SoCal! (:
I’ve tried 5:2 fast before, but I didn’t have the discipline to keep myself on track. I am trying it again tomorrow and I was wondering if there was something that helps on your fast days? Thanks!

    Hi Penngu,

My fasting favs: black coffee with cinnamon, Quest Bar around lunch, green tea, easy Healthy Choice dinner with red pepper flakes (spice is important), relaxing tea after dinner and sparkling water before bed.

Let me know if you come up with some tips, good luck!

    Wishing I was from SoCal,

    Penggu, good morning!

This is what definitely helps me: The first time around I did what the Fast Diet book recommends. I picked any two random days a week. As Dr. Mosley states, this was his personal experiment and it worked very well for him. Unfortunately, it did not work as well for me. I was losing great, but as time went on, I found myself not doing the second fasting day for the week. Then eventually, I just stopped altogether. Guess what? Weight came back and then some. A no-brainer.

So then I read a book recommended by Dr. Mosley, called The 2 Day Diet by Dr. Michelle Harvie. She has an even quicker read out called The 2 Day Diet Quick & Easy. This is what I love about Dr. Mosley; he is kind and generous enough to talk about all forms of fasting by other researchers.

Dr. Harvie is the one who has done all the human experiments on 5:2. She recommends two CONSECUTIVE days of fasting, both low cal AND low carb. Doing two days in a row burns more fat and doing it low carb really lowers your insulin levels so that you are not hungry. I am amazed at how much better I am doing on 5:2 this time around. Doing it two consecutive days means I get it out of the way for the rest of the week and actually do them! Dr. Harvie recommends doing a food exchange type diet for the remaining five days of the week, but I just ignore that and eat what I please, being mindful of what I’m doing.

This time around I am confident I will reach my goal weight and be a 5:2 success story. If you low cal, low carb for two consecutive days, your hunger is really blunted. I stick to a maximum of 650 cals per fast day/minimum 50 grams protein per fasting day/less than 50 grams total carb per fasting day, as used in the studies. I’m writing down my menus so that as time goes on, no counting anything on my fasting days; I’ll just know what to eat.

    Hope this helped!

I really need to add that in her book Dr. Harvie does mention that the small percentage in her study who couldn’t do consecutive days still lost just doing any random days.

Two consecutive days is a God-send for me, but we all have to find our way. That’s what’s so great about 5:2. You can personalize it to fit you.

Hi Emily- oh wow, I haven’t seen snow in a really long time. It’s rather hot here this week. Anyway, thank you for the reply! I think eating at school where I’m away from all the junk food I’m exposed to at home really helped for today. That’s one tip I learned from Day 1!

Hi Ella- I’m really considering doing 2 consecutive days this week, but I’m just afraid I might not be able to keep it up. The last time I tried, I succeeded the first couple times but fell off the wagon the next few times. I guess I’m gonna have to learn discipline all over again! (: Thank you for the suggestion and the info!

Penggu, it sounds like you’re on your way. I loved the cafeteria food when I was at school – a little too much, of course!

Ella, that information is very interesting. I may try it out next week. Do you eat any carbs at all? I have a little bit of carbs during dinner and this seems to help keep my sanity. Of course, I do make sure to have plenty of protein on fast days.

Not only do we have snow, but once it starts out here it pretty much stays until late March, if I didn’t love my husband so, I would be out of here :). We have a short weekend planned for Florida in a few weeks, I’m so excited! Also, spring break we’ll be going to Mexico. Lots of motivation to continue with fasting!
