  • Welcome to 5:2, Cruisingkiwi. Well done on starting to get your health & body into gear before it takes on a life of its own! Sneaky kilos jumping on board when you’re not looking….we all know about that. Yes, ask away, someone here will be happy to answer any of your questions.

    Hope you’re warm now Hilary.
Love lemon tarts, Purple. My fav. Don’t know if I would’ve been so strong.

JJ – OMG nooooo to decaf!! I’m sure there are some out there who may enjoy it, but it certainly is not a requirement. I’m a don’t-mess-with-it kinda girl. Full fat, full caffeine, etc…ok maybe not sugar, but you get the idea.

Nik – You’re doing so well. Keep it up and you will fall into a routine that suits and you’ll know when it feels right. FDs for me now are a non-event and I even look forward to them. I’m stuck in the 63s right now….but I think its just my body resisting one last time before letting that fat go….Thin had exactly the same issue in the 63s.

OK, I’m sold…definitely trying this hot shower trick tomorrow morning. Thin, you started this, so I will report in the morning.

Something else on TV tonight that’s of interest. On Ch 9 straight after that new HotPlate thing – I think its at 8.40..but check your local guides. Fat, Diet, Sugar….something like that.

Tonight I’m having teriyaki & wasabi beef with mushrooms & lots of veg. Thinking that fits with our current theme. Certainly makes it more interesting thinking of a menu that suits Cherry Blossom season! Thanks Merry! Enjoy that pond-scum everyone! CM xx

….AND did anyone notice we just clicked over to 6000 posts on our thread. Congrats everyone…..and yes, it does feel like a big family. CM xx

Hi JJ, well done in getting below 80 again. It feels good when we reach goal numbers doesn’t it. You don’t have to drink decaff coffee. I do (and decaff tea) but that is because I gave up caffeine when pregnant and breast feeding and have just chosen to continue along the decaff road. If you do want to try decaff coffee, I am using Republica Organic decaf (naturally decaffeinated and chemical free). It is nice. I get it from IGA (but not sure if all IGA’s stock it). My decaff tea is PG Tips (English brand). EA

Hey EA – Whoops……CM currently removing foot from mouth!! Glad you have found a good decaf & enjoy it! x

ha ha CM – our posts must have crossed because I hadn’t seen yours before I posted mine re decaff. That’s okay – you go fully decaff and enjoy it. EA xxxx

EA, do you remember the PG Tips ads with the chimps on TV in the UK?

The decaf thing has nothing to do with 5:2. CM – I think I started the decaf thing last page reporting what I drink, but It’s very weak tea, decaf coffee or peppermint tea for me because I react to caffeine. You enjoy your coffee, no worries. I’m one of those people who react to many things, and mostly don’t talk about it, cause hey, it’s plain boring really, but on here we’re talking food all the time so out it comes 🙂

Thanks everyone for the congrats and encouragement yesterday. You’re a great bunch! So glad we share this ride. I am really, really happy to have found 5:2. Many thanks to Dr Michael Mosely!

Cherry Blossoming: King Oyster mushrooms are 35 cals/100 gms. $4 for 500gms in asian food shop. They have a long thick white stem, about 12-15 cm long, come in packs of 4-5, have a small flat brown cap. The stems are what impresses. When cooked they are more solid than everyday mushies, and I even found a vegan recipe where they can imitate scallops. Will be trying that as OH is allergic to shellfish(molluscs). We had them sliced in veggie soup, but will try them sliced in a stir fry.

Julie, I remember that restaurant in Osaka Castle forecourt. My effort was just a green tea icecream from the souvenier shop. Didn’t try the clothing for photos, but watched the kids, especially the little boys having photos in samurai hats, very cute. Ended up slowly slowly getting up to the top of the castle. Had a look on each floor at the exhibitions and sat for a awhile where I could. Got the lift down. Later on we learnt about ‘waterfall viewing’ and ‘waterfall shopping’ i.e. Take the lift to the top and walk down the levels. Explained the huge lines at the lift.

Purple- didn’t come across egg throwing, but did have the amazingly wafer thin egg omelette cooked in the dining room at breakfast, very long strip that was then rolled up. Amazing to watch them being made.
    Must go,
    Cheers, Merry

Thin – how could I forget ha ha. I loved those chimps as a kid.

Second fast day for me this week and I’m already hungery – oh dear. Weigh in this morning was a maintained 66.9 so I am happy with that as I had a home made double choc chip biscuit yesterday!

Going out for a walk soon so hoping to burn up some more calories. On tonights menu it is veggie soup and salmon on the side. I haven’t got into the whole Japanese thing yet!

    All the best fellow fasters

Congrats SHs on the 6000++ posts and the sustained weightlosses.
Merry, the egg throwing reference was related to Teppanyaki restaurants where they give you a bowl and expect you to catch a tossed egg. Great if you are in your best clothes and you miss! 🙂

Missed your “What’s for dinner?” the other day, Thin. Last night, an icy cold feed day, I chopped up red onion, pepper, fennel, red capsicum, garlic, zucchini, sweet potato, heritage tiny tomatoes (all different colours) and 1/2 a potato. Put them all in a baking dish with 2 thin spicy Italian pork sausages each and swished them around regularly as they baked. Served with steamed bok choy. Yum! Very colourful and flavoursome. And warming!

    Happy days, P 🙂
PS It was -20 deg at Perisher last night!!!

    Morning everyone,
Sitting by the fire trying to get warm, yesterday started at -4 and never got above 6 for the day, heaps of rain overnight, and I secumbed to another virus for the winter. However have the lovely sound of baby chicks in the house as they are hatching today, glad the cool room shed can be used to put them in for a few weeks until the weather warms up.
Last weeks weight in was status quo, but was busy with conferences and work. Love the cherry blossom theme guys, the buds are swelling on my weeping cherry in the front garden, which says I need to get better soon to finish all my pruning before spring arrives.
This week down a bit because I don’t feel hungry, will try to fast tomorrow so that I have the weekend clear, although the new baby chicks will be demanding their food very soon.
Hope everyone else is dodging the winter chills, Charlie.

Thank you all for your warm welcome… it’s nice to be among friends! Second fast day for me and so far so good. I’m hoping that it’s not just the novelty factor that’s keeping me in line so far. Resisting the urge to weigh myself is hard but given I’m only a heartbeat into this I don’t want to face the disappointment of not loosing a milligram… or worse!

Merry, your oyster mushrooms made me think of another variation on the Cherry Blossom theme… enoki mushrooms (37cal/100g) Very mild tasting, long and stringy. A great alternative to noodles in any Asian broth and even add a bit of a crunch if you don’t boil the bejeeezus out of them!

I too am a decaf drinker, as just one drink in the evening keeps me awake, and I started having a coffee instead of pudding, and I just drink whatevers cheap and don’t notice any taste difference. I drink a normal one if I have a coffee in the weekend. (I too remember the chimps from my UK days)

I’ve been getting really sensitive teeth the last week or so and can only put it down to the fruit teas I drink on fast day – I only have 2 or 3 but it seems to be enough to upset up equalibrium. Tomorrow’s FD I will try more hot water and less tea 🙁

I think I need to include more mushrooms in our stirfrys as they’re so low calorie (and tasty) – thanks for the mentions above.

My total fast day yest went surprisingly easy – good to put it in my back pocket for when the weight isn’t so easy to move.

Quiz night for me after my hill run this evening, so will be rushing down a quick OH cooked meal and trying not to buy any food at the pub!

Happy / strong fasting wishes for all those joining me tomorrow.

Morning to all…….I have been reading through all the posts this morning and wow what a lot of them. Glad I dont have to drink decaf coffee!! Most of the time I drink Japanese Sencha but I do like coffee in the morning especially on fast days.

This morning was an interesting weigh in……I woke up, toilet stop, then weight 80.2. Then had a shower and weighed 79.4, and thought ok two days of fasting and not much movement. Went to kitchen made sandwiches for lunches, checked vegie garden and pulled a few weeds. Came upstairs and needed the toilet again then decided to weigh again for some reason. Weigh was 78.6!! I dont want to weigh again today as really happy with that, but am wondering why so many different figures and each time getting better!!

Just been to the shops now to get a couple of things for my Nabe tonight.

CruisingKiwi just love Enoki mushrooms but our Japanese grocery shop did not have any in stock when there yesterday and had to buy at farmers mart. Cost there is $7.99 for about 200 gms. Personally I just love Shimeji mushrooms. I can get them sometimes but still really expensive. Just love shopping in Japan at the markets as they are usually about $1.50 for 500gms there. Buna Shimeji are brown mushrooms that have a nuttier flavour.

So what goes into Nabe? Chicken breast, cabbage, carrot, spring onion, konnyaku, daikon. You also can put in tofu but I will leave this out tonight. The soup base will be miso.

    Catch up with everyone later……JJxxx

    Afternoon Gang. Happy Hump Day!

Blimey Purple, -20 in Perisher?? I knew it was cold at the moment but had no idea we got temperatures like that. Are you far from Perisher?

Hi CharlieG, sorry you got that bug again. You’re not much better than Purple with -4! Being a Qld girl, I don’t think I could manage living somewhere that gets sooo cold and then doesn’t warm up much during the day. Touch wood….last winter I had 8 virus/cold/fluey bugs. This year nothing so far – fingers & toes crossed. Flu shots both years. Only difference is 5:2??? Do you think it has anything to do with it??

CruisingK – Don’t worry, once the novelty wears off, the feeling of wellbeing (& weight loss) will keep you motivated. Otherwise you can be assured that we will be happy to provide you with a kick-in-backside if needed!! Good idea using enoki as noodles – I hadn’t thought of that. Our local grocer carries all types of Japanese mushies.
Nik – Try the herbal teas instead of the fruit teas. Most of us enjoy peppermint, but I also enjoy chinese jasmine, ginger, camomile, lemongrass. Yes, mushrooms are a great food and I love them, particularly in summer when I always add lots of them raw in salads.

JJ – That Nabe sounds delicious and I’ll give that a go over the weekend.

Well, I don’t know what’s going on with this weighing thingie after having a shower. I tried it this morning and I went UP! Not doing that again! Thin, I know you use those you-beaut scales that send electric-shocks up your legs, but how about you JJ?? Are your’s special ones or just bog-standard electronic scales like mine? Does anyone else have this mysterious condition occur after a shower??

Have just finished making a beef cheek curry and the smell is driving me crazy. OH was getting very excited and thought he was getting it for dinner tonight….nope, told him it was a FD for me! Very upset! I think it always tastes better after a couple of days sitting in the fridge.

Have a great day/FD everyone. CM xx

CM – the scales I am using are a reasonable brand but not the ones that send the electrics up your legs. Used to have scales like that until about 6 months ago and after about 15 years they decided not to continue living. Bought these scales and have been happy with them except for what they tell me!!!!

Nabe finished……was able to get some great mushrooms at the farmers mart. Shitake, Enoki, King Oyster and Black Fungi. No Shimeji unfortunately.

I counted up the calories manually for each ingredient and total came to 538. This was with 240g of chicken breast and it is enough to serve three people I think.

    Nice dinner tonight!!

Hope everyone has had a great day today….JJxxx

Hello, my father-in his early seventies and incredibly fit and healthy kept going on about the 2/5 thing and boring the crap out of me-44 and incredibly fat (but carries it well!)! But then I found book-the Fast Diet book- in the bottom of a box of crap I was taking to the markets and read it on the toilet mostly (the toilet being my refuge from fambly)and I liked the tone-I had read the Wheat Belly thing and the insane American hyper-evangelism (in the forums it was like Fundamentalist Religion delivered through a horrid puerile swarmy smugness) (sorry to be negative but it is just so much fun!)Anyway, I really liked the tone and the idea of just white knuckling it through one day of not eating with fantasies of whatever you want on the other side…I must admit I have not stuck to my fast days terribly well after the first week but after three weeks still seem to be losing a bit of weight and my relationship to food is sooo much more normal-no longer sugar addict! no longer eating to punish myself (for being too fabulous in a mediocre world) (I say tongue in tiramisu)(not really) -I have enjoyed and overcome heaps of addictions but food is the tsunami of addiction so the all or (near) nothing approach really floats my icecream boat (not really) I am aiming for Tuesdays and Thursdays if anyone wants to hear me whine on those days, and of course I will pretend to listen to youse in return and say appropriately encouraging things (but I will end up the thinnest! the thinnest I tell you) (evil laugh) (there should be an emoticon for evil laugh-and then I would not despise emoticons to much)

Well it’s nearly 6pm and I’m on here to crow about having had only 25 cals so far today (yep, you guessed it, 22 cals for my A&C milk in coffee this morning – so who wants to work out what single item I just ate for the other 3 cals? Come on, you should all know this one!).

So, EA, you convinced me to try the ‘all day’ FD and I’ve done it twice now (if we’re not counting the coffees). I’ve experienced a little hunger here and there during the day; once it went away when I went for a 5km walk, the second time I was about to make some soup when my neighbour came over – to ask me about 5:2 funnily enough – and stayed a couple of hours. By the time I finally made the soup, I decided I may as well hold out for dinner so I just froze it. The neighbour had bought the Angela Dowden 5:2 recipe book & she’s just passed that over the fence for me to borrow, so there’s another bonus.

I’ve had a good chuckle at the posts above and will reply in a separate post to them. Meanwhile, congratulations to all those who’ve lost more weight – especially those that have adopted the “post-shower” method and JJ, I agree, take the lowest weight of the day and stop while you’re ahead. We’re almost there, another FD nearly behind us.

Cookla – welcome, your deranged sense of humour will fit in well here!

JJulie – I haven’t tried the multiple weigh-ins, but my boss has recently bought new scales and has noticed up to 1.5kg variance in a day – and she’s a skinny wee dot. She’s doing the 5:2 for health reasons more than weight-loss – she likes the result of giving her digestion a rest. But I’m home tomorrow so I might give it a try at different times.

FD for me tomorrow and a large bag of mushrooms in my fridge – I’m a happy camper!

Alright, okey-dokey, that’s really very interesting. Actually, I’ve now thought the better of it, I’ve decided not to comment. Anyhoo…..moving right along.

Good for you Thin…crow away mate!! I’m also going well. Only 300 cals including dinner plus something else…guess what?? Had a stressful aftn!

Still haven’t had a chance to look at Mimi’s 5:2 recipe book…..but I’m feelin good vibes coming from the closed book which is still sitting on the kitchen bench…..oh well, maybe tomorrow!

Miso soup, slendier & a few vegies for dinner. Keeping away from the shower tomorrow morning.

Have a lovely evening Losers! CM xx

Happy hump day all. Second fast day almost under the belt and am surprisingly ok. Sitting comfortably on 350cals and don’t fancy anything else.. Except a teensy weensy glass of wine as it was a crapper of a day at work and normally I’d have knocked off half a bottle by now. If I measure precisely 110 mls then lock it away…Will that make me a bad person…?

CM.. Mimis recipe book is great. Bought it to give me some ideas as I’m a recipe book tragic (food porn!) tho I rarely cook out of them as I like to experiment. Better to experiment with boundaries a couple of days a week for now.

    Cheers all (maybe… Still undecided)

Thin – ok I will own up!! I dont know what the 3 calories could be!!

That was a cherry tomato JJ! And CM, I know exactly what you had too! 65 cals right? 😆 Well done on your low cal intake today, you deserved a treat. That neighbour who came round earlier came to tell me she’d just consumed two slices of pizza – on a FD! We had a little talk.

CharlieG, so sorry you’re sick again. Things can only get better for you. Chicks sound cute. We’re in the process of training the dog we’re looking after to do some tricks.

CruisinK, I don’t know how you can resist weighing. You are very strong. BTW CM, after walk & shower today, I was back to 67.1kgs. Quite keen to weigh in tomorrow now. Don’t try this at home CM.

Welcome Cookla. Enjoyed your mad post.

I love quiz nights NikT. I can usually only answer the Geography questions and never the sport ones. Have fun at the pub.

I stumbled upon a Japanese grocery store today. I didn’t recognise much but the things I did were more expensive than my general Asian grocer. One ingredient I often see in recipes is low salt soy sauce. Why does this cost twice the price? JJ do you know a Japanese brand that doesn’t cost $12 a bottle?

Purple, your dinner last night sounded lovely. I can’t remember when I asked what you were having but I think you were having a FD so I was curious to know what you were having.

    Have a good night all.

3 cals, nope, I give up.

Ah, the Teppinyaki egg throw. Forgot about that.

No magic showers in my bathroom. Lots of weight loss directly linked to what, how much and when I eat it though.

Dinner last night- kangaroo mince meatballs, 97cals/100gms,tomato based sauce, cauli, carrot, snow peas, brussell sprouts, all low cal/ low GI, strawberries and low cal jelly. Tonight, rest of the vegie soup with last of kangaroo meatballs added, strawberries with no sugar applesauce. Loving the strawberries this year. Will try the cauli soup again soon with no cayenne and ground pepper to taste at the end. Thanks for the feedback. FD tomorrow….

Mix of mushies sounds good. Enokis as noodles, interesting.

Thank you Hillary for your unabashed welcome-I was hoping there would be a sense of humour here as well as some inspiration for sticking more rigidly to the fast days-Fast Days at Rigid High, one might quip, if one had a mind to so with -mwah PS I have read most of the posts above but what is the shower thing? I missed the initial mention…

Mmmmmm – Thin, 3 cals? 1/4 pkt Slendier. 1/3 Almond. A sniff of a chip packet. Oh, I don’t know!!!

CruisingK. Congrats on making it through today, well done. I’m also a recipe book tragic! Got a million of them, but also rarely follow a recipe….love tweaking things, but they do give me inspiration! Only time I stick to recipes is baking.

Hey Thin – congratulations on waiting until dinner. I am very proud of you. I wonder if it will make any difference on the scales??? I ate my dinner earlier than usual at about 5pm because I was hungry today. I have been for a good walk this morning and ironed in the afternoon instead of sitting down, so I am hoping that has helped with the calorie burn. It’s now 7.30, I have my pj’s on and really want to go to bed. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. I really want to eat something but can’t so think the best option is an early night. I might sneak in another cup of tea with milk though which will bring me over my 460 calories a tad but it is either that or homemade double choc chip cookies!!

Roll on tomorrow so I know I can eat more and then probably won’t be fussed!!

Yeah, I don’t know what the three calories are either Thin. A tic tac or something??

Almost bed time fellow fasters. All the best for those Thursday Fasters.

Actually Thin, I have to confess. I very nearly succumbed to additional calories until I read your post saying we are almost there. You hit me with some reality and I thought it would be a shame to ruin the day now when it is almost over. Blimey, doing the 5:2 with you guys certainly makes it easier. xxxx

Sniff of a chip packet! Tictac! You guys are too funny.

Thanks EA, this is making my stress about 5:2 on o/seas holidays melt away knowing that I could go all day with almost no cals if need be. It could make travelling so much easier. I don’t know about the scales – does a short ‘eating window’ count for anything?

As for you and the double choc chip cookies that you’ve mentioned TWICE now, (homemade you say, so did you make them yourself?), this is not something that you are going to miss out on – tomorrow, you can have one so put them out of your mind for tonight.

Good girl EA! Leave the cookie in the tin! You’ll be glad in the morning.
Hi Cookla. You sound a little bit crazy & will fit in well here!
Merry I don’t think I’ve ever eaten skippy. What’s it taste like?
Thin, “having a little chat” sounds scary for your neighbour! Did you sort her out? 65cals spot on! You know me well. BTW, how did you put on 4kg today….must be a typo…67.1! So is it 62 or 63? No definitely not showering tomorrow!

Hey Cookla, no white nuckles needed. Read up, stay under 500-600 cals depending on male/female. Best to eat calories, not drink them. There seem to be 2 ways people gravitate on FDs – 1 is breakfast and dinner with cals split between, the other is don’t eat till earlyish dinner, then eat all cals in 1 meal, and sleep on a full stomach. Drink heaps, water etc that is. Work out your TDEE, total Daily Energy Expenditure, top right corner of the home page. Stick under this for non Fast Days. Weigh in weekly. Measure various bodily bits, record. Count cals for awhile, such fun!, low cal low GI gives biggest food volume, exercise if you want, keep records. Work out what works for you, and your lifestyle. Horses for courses. Fall off the horse, get back on. Repeat. FD tomorrow, check in if you want a kick in the butt, or a suggestion. No competition, just if you want it or not. 5:2’ll reset your psychological links with food if you let it.

CM, Skippy’s a little gamey, no fat. For me best eaten with a spiceyish sauce. Coles , not home made, 1st time was better than these, don’t know if the mix has changed. Thin slices of skippy steak works with salad too.

Cherry Blossomish- have cooking sake( yuk) and black sesame dressing( possibilities). Will look up recipes. Even I have cookbooks – I look at the pictures mostly. Time for bed, too much posting for me lately, so I’ll be reading but prob not posting for a few days.

    Cheers guys,
    Onwards and downwards!
    Merry

Thanks Thin and CM. No I did not make the cookies. A “loving” family member made them on Monday (my fast day) and there are still some left. Nothing like the waft of a freshly baked biscuit when you are fasting!! Anyway, I had the extra cup of tea and no more. Off to bed now nice and early. Night night all.

Thanks for review of skippy… Might think about it! Havd s good few days. Hear from you then.
    Nite all. CM xx

CM, I was just seeing if you were paying attention – yes, I meant 61.7 not 67.1kgs, thanks!
Re: skippy, which I’ve only cooked once or twice, the grill needs to be really, really hot and it gets cooked quickly & sliced thinly. Like Merry, I’ve only used the Coles sauce, nothing adventurous. It’s very lean meat. I’d have it again but it’s not on the weekly menu.

    Hi guys

Love your posts. Have been able to read but not post for a few days. Spending time at the beach in Croatia where it is over 30 C and very pretty. Lovely people good food interesting scenery. What more could we want.

Not fasting but watching food intake today. No sugar or wheat today. Had it all yesterday with local, pizza and beer. And salad.

    Cheers to all, Bay 🙂

Hi all, wow 4 days without internet service and we’ve gone from page 119 to 121. Too many to reply to and will have to take some time to read properly but have done a quick skim.

Had a wonderful time with my family and little ones, didn’t get much rest but these are precious moments. Miss 3yr old called me a hero after we trekked for what seemed like hours to see a glow worm grotto.

Weigh in this morning 78.1 but after eating, cakes, biscuits, pies, bread and drinking wine it was expected. Cakes and bikkies homemade. Did do a lot of walking. Not stressing about it just get back on the horse as Merry said.

FD today so we will see what tomorrow brings.

Just love reading all the posts, who needs reality TV, this is real life.

Good morning everyone in the Southern Hemisphere :),

I live on the Gold Coast, Australia. I am in my fifties, studying full-time and have had a weight excess for most of my life.

I started the 5+2 last Friday after weighing myself on Thursday and realised I had regained the 15kg I lost on the Dukan food programme a couple of years ago!!! It was not the Dukan programmes fault but my inability to work the maintenance part of it. It wasn’t hard, I just messed up and didn’t pay attention or be mindful of what I was doing.

I wasn’t surprised because that has been the pattern all my life – I would starve myself and then once I went back to my normal way of eating (very healthy but included bread, potato and rice side for most meals) – leading to yo-yoing weight!!!

So here goes – I am ready to give this a lifetime commitment because it sounds sustainable and normal.

I hope that being part of the Southern Hemisphere team to keep me motivated and give me lots of great tips to keep to the programme :).
I will enjoy reading your posts.

signing out from the Gold Coast.

Hi, this is my first day of the 5:2 eating plan. I’m in Canberra and have just returned from holidays in, so am not enjoying the cold today, or the additional holiday weight.
I’m in my forties with a partner who is struggling with weight, high cholesterol and blood pressure and mild sleep apnoea. Reading the book convinced me, 5:2 eating may just be the one thing that helps ensure his good health and longevity.
Any tips on websites or apps for a handy calorie counter? I spent ages working out if 50 ml of unsweetened almond milk in my porridge was too much, or if I should have had 30 mg of oats and not 40 mg! I’m looking forward to the journey, just don’t feel adequately educated yet!
I look forward to reading your triumphs and tribulations.

Welcome Coastcatibi – you sound a similar age to me, although I work full time rather than study. A study timetable must be a challenge of itself to eating healthily, but 5:2 will fit in well.

Cookla – the shower reference was from JustJulie who had multiple weigh-ins recently and dropped 0.8kg after a hot shower! It doesn’t seem to work for the rest of us that way. I tried it this morning and it went like this:
Wake up, go to loo, weigh in: 66.3
    Coffee x 1, pee x 2, weigh in: 66.1
    Shower, weigh in: 66.1
    Aah, c’est la vie!

Helen – I often just put the food I’m searching into Google together with the word calories. That way I go to the particular counter that lists that food. Your almond milk came up at 35 per 250 mls or 7 for your 50 mls.

Welcome Coast to your new way of life. I can completely identify with your weight loss/gain journey as that was my pattern most of my adult life. I’m 59 and it’s taken me all these decades to find this sustainable way of eating. I’ve lost over 21kgs and am now maintaining a healthy weight of 61/62kgs and a BMI of 24%. Ask us anything. We don’t know everything but we love helping people succeed at this and we’re all here to cheer you on and share our experiences.

I mentioned yesterday about a 5;2 recipe book my neighbour passed over the fence by Angela Dowden. I woke early this morning and have been enthusiastically reading it since 5.30am. I highly recommend the recipes for all of us on here but, importantly, the intro pages answer many of the practical questions that newbies seem to have – and it doesn’t hurt for any of us to re-visit why we’re doing this from time to time. Dowden is a nutrionist and her book is called ‘The 5:2 cookbook; 100 Recipes for Fasting’. I’ve just seen it on ebay for $11.

Good to hear from you Intesha – have your family gone home now? Pleased that you had a good time. Pies? What pies?

Bay, glad you’re enjoying your holiday. I bet it’s nice and sunny.

H-B, welcome to you too. Try myfitnesspal.com. Also, if you haven’t already, make sure you read Dr Mosley’s book before you do anything. Measure yourself everywhere. Work out your TDEE on this web site. Get organised, plan ahead. Get yourself a good set of bathroom and kitchen scales and some measuring spoons and cups. Calorie counting is a chore at first but it’s very important that you don’t ‘estimate’. Most of us would find we get it very wrong. As we’re not eating much on a fast day, it doesn’t take long to work out the cal-count for fast days and it’s very enlightening to learn what a healthy portion size should look like.

EA, how’s that double chocolate chip cookie tasting this morning?

Happy FD all who are getting thru it today!

Welcome Coast, Cookla & Helenb – good on you for giving this a try and interesting to read your stories….

Hey Thin – The pub quiz was not so well run and had rubbish prizes… and we did better in the raffles than the quiz – I love geography and music, but we did rubbish in Music and excelled in sport… much to our surprise! My OH was well chuffed though because I won him a pottle of oysters (which I wouldn’t go nr with a barge pole). Unfortunately, FD for him too (last night and today) so he’ll have to wait till tonight to enjoy.

Thanks CM – My grocery day today and I’ll get some chamomile tea as am currently sipping my first fruit tea ‘for lunch’ and teeth already shuddering – so I’ll be ditching the rest of the sweet fruity ones – sounds like a plan!!

This week has been a low calorie week, experimenting with different fasting options, so looking forward to weekly weigh in tomorrow

Thanks for the welcome team Southern Hemisphere :)) and hello to the other newbies,
It will be interesting to see how we travel on this new journey. Good luck!

Thin, thanks for sharing your success, it is very motivating to hear success and that it can be maintained. I can hardly wait to turn around my life.

Most of the parts of my life are excellent and I am very happy generally but my weight and the effects it has on my health have caused me sadness – especially because my preoccupation with controlling weight and food (with no success) are so consuming. I just want to be normal and eat to live not live to eat,
that’s enough from me on emotions for the moment :)).

    Reporting in:
I have already done two fast days. I had chosen Monday and Wednesday but it turned out that this week Tuesday and Wednesday were better for me because I was busy, out and about and away from temptations.

I don’t think I managed to keep to the 500cals because I got the munchies in the evening but kept to crackers to munch on. I still managed a downward trend.

Quite a bit actually but I figure that is probably water loss. I will wait to see how the trend is for the next week.

over and out from the Gold Coast :))

Coast, a downward trend is all you need to get started. Well done. Doesn’t matter if it’s water. You can continue to improve your performance on a fast day as you progress with this WOL by choosing foods that are low GI and high protein to sustain you better and prevent the munchies. Incorporating protein in a FD is especially a good idea for women to help prevent muscle loss as we lose weight. Planning ahead means that you’re less likely to put things in your mouth that aren’t on your list for that day. We’re all still learning how to spend our calorie allowance wisely, even those of us that have been doing this for over a year now.

Please feel free to share your emotional experiences with food here if you want to. Many of us arrived at this WOL after years of battling with food demons and we’re now undoing decades of bad habits. I can absolutely identify with what you said about your weight causing you unhappiness and I have had ‘issues’ surrounding food dating back to my childhood. I’ve always been able to intellectualise why I over ate but could never overcome it. Until now. Intermittent fasting has given me the tools to be in control of food rather than it controlling me – most of the time. Welcome.

Thin – ha ha. I don’t know how those biccys are tasting as I have had only two cups of tea and my porridge. I probably won’t want one now but just knowing I can is enough. Oh how the mind plays tricks! I weighted in this morning at 66.35 which I am very happy with as I am almost back to where I was before my break (66.2) with just two fast days.

Hello and welcome to our newbies. This group is very supportive and happy to give virtual kicks up the backsides when needed. I’ve had my butt kicked on more than one occasion and very happy with that as it has kept me on track.

Coastcatabi – we certainly don’t want you starving yourself. It is so unsustainable. The good thing about the 5:2 is although you are reducing your calorie intake twice a week, you know the next day, you can eat what you want (within reason of course). The good part of this way of life is that you probably will start to not want to and not feel that you are depriving yourself of “naughty food”. A case in point is my biscuit craving. All the best. Keep checking in, especially if you are having a wobbly. I was yesterday and just read some wise words from Thin and it was all good again.

All the best to fasters today.

EA – you’ve also helped me out by being on this forum, probably more than you realise. Thanks for sharing your journey out there in the boonies.

Ah, bless you Thin. I am glad to be of help. xxxx

Thin – I always use Kikkoman soy sauce and they make a low salt variety. Im sure I have seen it around try the supermarket health food sections.

Thin, family here for another 3 weeks. The pies were chicken and veg made by my daughter-in-law but did succumb to a meat pie yesterday at a country bakery.

Have just had my protein shake so FD on track. I have been freezing all day and have just put another few layers on. FD’s I always seem to feel the cold more intensley.

JJ I but mine at Coles and get the low salt one.
