  • So I’m starting the 5:2 diet, decided Tuesday and Thursday’s will be my fasting days. However it is now 8:40pm and I’ve only had 341 calories.

Is it absolutely essential to get to as close as I can to the 500?

No. My allowance is 600 (male) and I sometimes have about 450. If you can get through the day on less than 500 you will be fine. You won’t lose a lot more weight – there is a limit to how fast it comes off, but on 341 cal a day you will certainly lose!

Hi Sazza, theoretically, being a guy, I should get 600 cal on my fast days. I’m not a very big guy and weigh 145lbs. I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 400cal and usually am only getting between 200 and 350. That’s on Mondays. On Thursdays I come in at zero calories as for me, Thursdays are full fast days, so I’m definitely getting less than the 5/600.

I read the 5:2 book, and I think the authors’ reasoning for the 5/600 calories is to find the way that was most sustainable for the greatest number of people. If more people would follow this plan because they are allowed one light meal, all the better for them. For those of us who can fast longer, or who can fairly easily go through the day with even fewer calories, I think that’s even better.
