  • Hey everyone,

My name is Melanie and I am currently studying my last year of high school here in Adelaide, Australia.
For my Media Studies assignment, I have to investigate on how social media promotes fad diets. It would assist me a lot if I could get some responses on your experiences or opinions on fad dieting and how it has been enhanced by social media.

    Please reply ASAP! Thank you.

I hope you aren’t thinking that the Fast Diet is a fad. It isn’t.

Now, if you want fad diets, look into the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, and the kelp, lecithin & B-6 diets. THOSE are fad diets that might give short term results but cannot be made a “lifestyle.”

Good luck on your research. Your success belongs to you.

melxo, I have to agree with FastJimmy, there is a ton of research support for intermittent fasting for health as well as weight loss, 5:2 as a form of intermittent fasting is not a ‘fad diet’. Good luck with your project.

5:2 will become my new eating lifestyle (I just started today). It’s not a fad.

Why not check out the official Weight Watchers forum? Although popular and around for 50 years, it was not sustainable for me over the years…off and on..off and on….which in my mind is the makings of a long-lived fad diet!

hi melxo I assume you are on here because inevitably many forum users will have been exposed to faddy diets at some point. While the fast diet shouldn’t be considered a fad, I urge you to have a look on tumblr at the vast quantity of faddy diets that are promoted under the tags #healthspo and #fitspo. There you will find the very worst and most extreme examples of the influence of social media on the promotion of fad diets. Good luck with your research but while you are there please try not to get sucked into a very dangerous world of teenagers dispensing extreme diet advice!
