  • First off I just wanted to introduce myself . I’m female from U.S.A. ( Vermont ) age 56 . Today was my first day trying 5:2 diet . Seeing I have done a few fast days of 10 – 16 hours . Thought I would just start off that way . Not too good an idea , did my usual water intake & coffee with a drop of cream (up until 4 pm )All of a sudden I Started feeling very dizzy almost to pass out stage . My BP had went up & my BG dropped . I’m used to the BG going low if I don’t eat & maybe I dehydrated myself with coffee & no food for too long πŸ™ After I had a couple pouched eggs with roman , I perked back up. So my next fast I will definitely not go without food for that long . Other than that I liked the energy levels it gave me . Only thing I didn’t think of was calorie intake being a problem .Never worried on LCHF , but when I looked at foods I was going to eat. Non was low cal. because Healthy fats are my friend . It’s not on 5:2 diet, todays the first day in over a year I didn’t cook my eggs in Butter LOL Fast days are going to be boring to me πŸ™ Because I’m pretty much at goal & want to enjoy Summer festivities ( yummy treats ) thought I would include 5:2 so I won’t go over board. Can’t wait to see if I lost any weight in the morning . Oh I have GERD so I can’t use very many spices – herbs to flavor my food . That will make this a little more difficult too .Butter & cheese are out too high cal. I don’t eat anything Low -fat or non – fat . I have cut all most all sugar – carbs out except what’s natural in whole foods.

I just joined the 5:2 diet to compliment my LCHF diet. I too don’t usually count calories, only carbs. I have been successful with LCHF with eliminating arthritis pain and losing some weight as well. Weight goes off slow at my age (64) so I am going to try the IF to see if that will nudge more weight off. I have ordered the fast exercise book to get some direction on strength training. Looking forward to trying this. I plan on doing my fasting on Tuesdays and Thursday. Oh, and I am female and live in the US (Kentucky). All suggestions welcome for the fasting days.

    Hi ebice and welcome:

They aren’t really fasting days because you can eat 500 cal. of anything you want! Many find one evening meal high in fat works best. Here are some tips: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

ebice, Wanted to say Good luck . Just doing my first day can’t help much on suggestions. Around the middle of the day I had 1 cup ( 45 cal.) of Unsweetened Coconut milk . Not the kind in the can too high sugar .The one in the box , I would use when I made a smoothie . A lot of electrolyte qualities to it , seemed to help stave off the hunger feelings πŸ™‚

MyLCHF lifestyle, I also have 56 years and I Lowcarb two years, I am Brazilian, I live in the city of Curitiba capital of ParanΓ‘, here now started the winter and is quite cold.

I have no difficulty in fasting, do Monday to Thursday with a few as meal the night with 1,000 calories, and the weekend is free but not consumption carbohydrates, exeto some roots.

    Hi LCHF,

Its not really clear to me what you’re trying to achieve? Are you trying to lose weight, it doesn’t sound like it but then again you don’t really say. The way most people do 5:2 its really not a fast as such, its just calorie restriction. If you really want to get the other benefits of fasting (i.e. other than losing weight) then calorie restriction wont get you there. There is no shortcut, eating less food is not the same as fasting.

You say that your BP went high and BG went low. Did you measure this? What values were they? Im suspecting that you were severely dehydrated which can occur with reduced food intake. Make sure you drink lots of water, maybe add a pinch of electrolytes (salts). Being on a LCHF diet I would have thought that your body would have been well adapted to burning fats to generate ketones for energy? There are lots of good BG & ketone meters on the market that are very cheap to buy. Perhaps it would be worth the investment to buy one so you an monitor yourself to se how your body reacts to reduced calories with respect to BP, BG and ketone production?

ANAIDE It’s nice to know someone else is doing LCHF & being the same age πŸ™‚ On LC for 15 months, best thing I’ve found.Maybe I just started the day off wrong. Thinking I was used to fasting for 16 hours . But usually I did that with a Bullet proof (decaf) coffee in the morning. I went till 4 pm on my fast day with nothing except a drop of cream in my coffee & water. If I try again I definitely will eat something for breakfast.

Thank you I checked out that fatsecret , I was using myfitnesspal but didn’t like it very much. Wouldn’t go on much unless I was gaining to see what I was doing wrong. No I don’t like counting calories , I did weightwatchers when I was 19 teen & always felt hungry !

Hello everyone, I lost a lot of weight with Lowcarb and did not count calories, but over time parked and I was on a plateau a year, and my weight increased again, I began fasting and day calorie count April 01 and already eliminated 4kg .

I know that may seem only a calorie restricted but is much more than that! fasting brings numerous benefits to health and even weight loss.

Today started the 42-day fast of the challenge, we will see the benefits we will bring this period.

bigbooty , I tend to get off track when writing .Why I wanted to start or try 5:2 fast diet was to stay in maintenance. Seems very difficult I’ve been 3 pounds away from goal , but then I jump up 5-10 pounds . Frustrating so I thought 5:2 would help drop weight faster then cutting back on eating everyday or changing macros . Plus I don’t stay in Ketosis constantly , I pop in and out if I have a high carb day. Yes I have a BG & a BP monitor ( separate ) but not the one that tracks ketones. Because I was pre diabetic with high BP before I lost weight already had those. Just bought the keto sticks . Those ketone monitors are fairly cheap, but those sticks are pricy !

So yes I did measure my BP it went up to 147/85 at 4 pm by 10 pm it was 161/91. Usually will stay 125’s/78’s & I do have to watch my salt intake . My BG goes way down late afternoon anyways if I don’t eat. Been in the 50’s before. My Dr. told me I shouldn’t be too concerned because I don’t have diabetes , then said eat when it gets low – don’t wait till you get dizzy to pass out stage πŸ™ Not sure maybe lack of eating & not enough water caused my body to go into fight or flight mode ( shocked) . I did go once for 19 hours fasting , but I did not feel good at the end . Could be my system still needs repairing ? My health was a mess a year ago . My Dr is amazed of what I have accomplished . Thank you for giving some pointers to look for .

I got down to my self imposed target weight and now do 6:1 water fast to stay at my weight. The other days I eat what I want but to be honest since starting on 5:2 Ive basically been eating healthy without making a conscience effort. By the end of 36 hours Im well and truly into ketosis but jump back out again as I do eat carbs, just not a lot of them.
