I have met quite a few of my internet friends and they call me “wee” too lol xx

    Good evening all,
What an exhausting day, so many resources, so many duplicate resources at that. No wonder ther is never any money in the education system, it’s all been spent. I honestly think there were enough resources for three classrooms, what’s more all three classes were in the same boat, crazy. I think they need to sell some stuff to other schools.

It took me five hours to sort out one deep cupboard. I don’t think the out going teachers should be allowed to leave such a mess. About one quarter of it ended up in the bin.

Ply – sounds a good idea, I pay a fortune in postage on ebay items.

Hi Treat89, great news that you are encouraging language teaching and understanding in a fun way. I think we need to teach languages for 30 minutes per day to really make a difference.

Amazon – for some very strange reason I seem to have a referred pain in my ankle which started today. How odd is that ?

Resolved to my lot in life at the moment. At least the weight is dropping off this week, no idea why, doesn’t make any sense.

Off to a wedding reception tonight, former work colleague so I need to get myself tarted up. Have a good weekend all(especially you SAMM)
    Jojo xxxxxx

Since yesterday was a b2d fast.
I had fish dinner. And jumped rope for 12 minutes.

    under tdee by 350 calories.
still tryinh to sort furniture and decor. At least I have things to do.

Went to bulk store to restock on dried fruits.
Will fast tommorrow and adf till next friday.

Good morning fast trackers from the sluggard 🙂

Firstly, SAMM, my thoughts are with you in your sad news. Please make the most of your time left together to generate happy memories for you and your daughter. It’s going to be a difficult journey but you have already demonstrated strength and perseverance. Look after yourself and your family.

Jojo, I hope you can eventually get some relief from your painful hip.

Despite still having lots of kg to lose I had a real eye-opener last night. OH and I went to see a performance of ‘The last confession’ starring the wonderful David Suchet. The audience demographic was definitely skewed to people our age and older and I was amazed at the proportion of grossly overweight people. The woman sitting next to me ‘flowed’ over to my seat and the armrest. I felt positively skinny in contrast. I commented to OH on the way home and he pointed out that because I still go to a paid job I don’t mix much with this age group. These people are ‘digging their graves with their knives and forks’!

Keep up the good work everyone!

    Good morning fast trackers,
In contrast to your evening Nicky I experienced the opposite, how weird is that? I was at a wedding reception where the band played 70’s rock music. Anyone under 40 was left around the edge of the floor whilst the oldies( fuelled by much alcohol) were head banging and giving it some welly. Sadly my health prevented me from taking part last night but I normally would have been up there with them. I had to be content with singing along and tapping my foot. The best part was watching the teenagers who simply did not understand what was going on, their Gran-parents having fun- whatever next? Also I do socialise a great deal with the over 60’s through choir, my gym and bowls and to be totally honest only a few of these are bigger than me, most tend to be slimmer due to their active lives. Just to let you know some are fighting back, obviously not the cinema goers. I will see whether the Theater goers are different next week as I am seeing a play.
Fast day today( make up for the buffet last night and the two cup cakes). Fortunately scales still at their lowest this morning and aiming for 13 stone with determination, I will do whatever I need to to get their before the end of September so I will need to average 3 lb per week, not impossible on ADF.
Ply – I am sure work routine will help you get your mojo back just as my planned holiday is helping me focus.
    SAMM – KOKO
    Jojo xx

    Morning all.
Jojo, the wedding reception sounds good. 70s music is definitely something I can relate to!
I’ve just read an interesting article about how fat became the culprit when in fact it is more likely that too many carbs and too much sugar are the problem. For anyone who is interested

    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/the-science-of-saturated-fat-a-big-fat-surprise-about-nutrition-9692121.html

I’m very pleased to have coped with 3 fast days this week and am very much looking forward to some more relaxed eating for two days. Typically I had planned a nice brunch before I go out but am not hungry in the slightest, in fact I feel full which is weird but typical for me after a fast day.
    Have a good weekend everyone.

Hi Samm, Jojo, Hermaj, Cheeseplease, & everyone else

Samm – I too am new to this thread and have enjoyed reading your posts. I am so very sorry to hear your desperately sad news, and can only reiterate the feelings and good wishes of everyone else. My thoughts are very much with you and your family.

Thanks for letting us stay on this thread Jojo. I’m so sorry to hear of your plight and do hope the injection helps. Try and enjoy your rest – a great excuse to spend lots of time on here. I absolutely agree with you about holidays in the sun (maybe you should treat yourself to one after what you have been through), and I too am a sun worshipper. It’s OH who won’t go abroad, so the holiday home in Wales was a compromise as it’s near the sea, which I also love. I still have the odd holiday in the sun though as I have a couple of single girlfriends I can go with, but with the lovely summer we have had here, it has been win win all round. It’s great to think you were a go-go dancer in your younger days! Good for you !

Hermaj – thanks for the lovely story about your moggy. What a great age. I am also reluctant to be old before I am ready, which is why I will not stop having my hair coloured, my eyebrows waxed or my nails painted for a long while yet. And after losing (almost) 2 stone, OH says I look 10 years younger, which I’m definitely beginning to feel. I promise never to mention the word ‘senior’ again! As for spotty young men – I could bang on for hours about my abhorrence of being approached in shops by “you orright there?” I HATE HATE HATE IT! I usually just say “yes thank you” and just stand there in silence. Whatever happened to “Can I help you?”!

Tartan lass – like some of the other ladies, I’m not much into exercise classes, but I do love dancing and your Zumba sounds great! Don’t get despondent over the small weight loss, I’m sure you will find lots more will drop off by next week. I had a laugh at remembering the things people take off at the weigh-ins at slimming clubs. We’ve all done it – especially squeezing out the final wee! At one club I went to in the 80’s, one lady even took off a particularly heavy, lined skirt!

Hi Amazon – I’ve been making my own bread for years, have a machine, and usually make rolls which I freeze. However I have stopped doing it since we’ve been on the 5:2 unless we are entertaining, and it has made a big difference, apart from helping the weight loss. We used to feel very bloated even after eating very little, and particularly from my point of view, I would feel very sleepy. I still occasionally eat pasta, as I love it, and the only way to get me through this diet is not to give up the things I really enjoy. Fortunately I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth, apart from a nightly mug of Cadburys Highlights, so don’t miss cakes and biscuits, but there are many times I could kill for a bowl of Kettle Chips! OH treated me to afternoon tea yesterday, which had been booked before I started the diet, and although it was beautifully done, I could certainly have done with more sandwiches and less sweet stuff – there were scones with jam and cream, meringues, cheesecake, orange cake and pannacotta. I couldn’t eat it all but made a very good attempt! The one interesting thing is that I often get quite painful spasms in the gut after eating things with a high sugar content. This didn’t happen yesterday, and I’ve noticed it doesn’t happen with ‘home cooked’ cakes and puddings, only bought ones, and breakfast cereals. It does seem therefore that something is added to these which could be causing the problem. That said, I do have an ounce of mixed Branflakes and Fruit & Fibre on non-FDs with lots of fresh fruit and a little Greek yoghurt. It’s my favourite breakfast.

Weemam – it’s great getting into clothes that you haven’t worn for a long time isn’t it? And then when even those clothes begin to get lose, it’s the most tremendous boost. But nothing can beat the feeling of being more active and alive. I too suffered from painful knee joints, and have already said (though maybe on another thread) that it got to the stage when I was literally hauling myself up the stairs and seriously thought it wouldn’t be long before we would need a stair lift. Now I (almost!) run up and down without thinking about it.

NickyF – I had to smile at your theatre experience, and the comment made by your other half. It’s very sad though that as some get older and maybe less mobile, it is so easy to turn to readily-prepared food for convenience, with it’s high sugar, salt and fat content. Let it be a lesson for us all to try and learn!

Well, I started this post yesterday morning, and had such a busy, but fun, day, I have only just got around to finishing it. Sorry if I’ve missed a few later postings. Just noticed had one from Amazon – looks very interesting. Will read the link. Well done on your 3 FDs.

It’s another busy one today, going to see a friend who hasn’t been well this morning, going to the local village show this afternoon, and out with friends for an Italian meal this evening. Yumm – pasta! Maybe not in the circumstances!

    Have a good day all

    Smiffy x

PS – for the Zero Noodle lovers – my local Boots had them on offer at 99p yesterday, so I guess that’s pretty general throughout their stores at the moment.

    Good afternoon everyone .
It can’t make up it’s mind whether to rain or not out there today lol . I have done 2 washings ,packed half the odds and ends into the car ,Been to the car wash and visited Ross . PHEW!!!!.
I am sure you ALL know by now we are going to the lakes tomorrow morning and home Tuesday . My RA In my knees is pretty sore at the moment so I am going to have my sugar free jelly as I am fasting today and sit on my bum for a wee while .
It is quite exciting clothes wise as so much fits me now that hasn’t for some time :). Hubby keeps saying ” it’s just a couple of days hen” too much to pick from :).
I don’t know if I will be on over the weekend . Hope so as I need my daily internet FIX :).
Have a brilliant weekend . those to are doing too much take care . SAMM big gentle hugs for you pal . Hugs to all.

    Wee xx

    Hi Smiffy and everyone else,

jojo, sorry you are having a rather painful time at the moment but glad you were able to enjoy the post-wedding knees-up. The 70s were a golden age for music, weren’t they? It was also the time I went to uni to do my first degree while also going through the hippy stage, with all the naughtiness of various sorts that entailed. Happy days!

When I shuffle off this mortal coil – hopefully not for a couple of decades yet – I want the first 15 minutes of Pink Floyd’s Shine on You Crazy Diamond from the album Wish You Were Here and maybe something by Queen, played before they lay me to rest in the woods in my bio-degradable box. I’d also like one of my younger rellies to read Philip Larkin’s “This Be the Verse”, the one about dysfunctional families which discretion tells me not to quote here.

Smiffy, I’m with you all the way about continuing to look good with such aids as hair colour, in my case half-head high/low lights. On the back of my head I’m still dark brown with not a hint of grey. Why is it some ladies of mature years opt for the blue rinse and pensioner perm? I don’t do the nails as I never have. I’m so cack-handed the nail varnish goes everywhere but on fingers and toenails.

Like you, thanks to good genes, good posture and good skin I look quite a bit younger than I am, even more so after losing around 2 stone on 5:2. I also have a very bad attitude.(I think jojo knows what I’m taking about). 🙂 While I’m still a bit porky in places, I now have wonderful shoulders which I’d love to show off, but sadly can’t do so because of the appalling bingo wings that go with them.

Don’t get me started on “are you all right?” instead of “can I help you?” In my case, at only 5’1″ it’s often “are you all right there, darlin’, sweetheart, my love, etc) I love the shock on their faces when I tell them I won’t put up with terms of endearment from total strangers. I’ve even set harrumphing emails to the management and it does seem to work. Strangely enough, the girls are worse than the boys.

The first time I was asked if I was all right, I remember thinking – do they think I’m about to shoplift, moon the customers, or throw up over the display?.

BTW thanks for the tip about zero noodles and Boots.

Finally, SAMM, just to say hi and let you know I’m here rooting for you and your family along with everyone else.

    Hi wee,

Having just gone off on one about being called darling, sweetheart, etc by total strangers, your husband’s words to you remind me that I don’t mind in the least being called “hen”.

Last year I spent a while doing research in Glasgow and was bowled over by the way that retail staff, hotel receptionists, cabbies and bus drivers manage to be friendly, warm and helpful without being the least patronising. With one exception. The woman at the check-out in M&S called me “darling”, in the tone of voice usually reserved for houehold pets or small children, but her accent revealed that she was from South of the Border.

No one in a shop, hotel, cab or bus called me “hen”, it was only if I got chatting with local ladies. From another woman it sounds “sisterly”. I never heard it from a man, so I can’t really say. The guys tended to go for “pal”, which was great and made me smile. Maybe we should invite a bunch of Glaswegians, or other similarly civilised Scots, down to London to show their English colleagues how to treat customers. 🙂

And not forgetting duck or m’duck in the Midlands!

And “bab” also from the Midlands!

We are in Central Scotland . Funny thing is I call my Hubby Pal . On facebook I call everyone pal . I am one of those people next to in at the supermarket … well anywhere actually . I am “A wee blether” as we say here . I remember our youngest granddaughter asking “nanny ,do you know EVERYBODY ” lol . I just might 🙂

    Wee xx

sorry I meant to say I talk to people next to me in the supermarket and anywhere else lol . Busy packing and jumping in and out to do E-mails xx

Yes, Happy, I’m hearing a lot of Midlands “duck” lately. One half of my dissertation is about British New Wave Cinema of the late 50s and early 60s and of course, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, set in Nottingham, is one of the classics of the period.

“Bab” is a new one on me, Cheeseplease.

Where in Central Scotland are you, wee? Last year we had a wonderful week based just outside Perth. Does that count as Central Scotland? I have a particularly soft spot for Glen Lyon where you can drive for miles without seeing a soul, apart from a few Highland cattle, such beautiful creatures.

    Bon voyage, BTW xx

Hermaj, I think it is a Black Country term. It comes from “babby” (baby) and is used as in “alright bab?” (using appropriate accent). Having moved back down South after 15 years in the Midlands I really miss the warm and friendly Brummies (although I appreciate you had an unfortunate run in with the unusually frosty lady in charge of the back to backs!)

Thanks for the explanation Cheeseplease . I had never heard of bab either ,

We are in Stirling. gorgeous place . I was born here 72 years ago .
The highland cattle are amazing . Tell you a wee story about them . We have a sweet factory near us McGowans the make highland toffee and on the front is a HIghland Cow . When I was little I thought the cows(coos ) as we say , made the toffee . When any of our family see them in a field . the shout out “toffee coos ” WE ARE all a bit mad lol .
Perth is Tayside & Central Scotland . Only 45 mins drive from us .Fort William is gorgeous too . We actually live on the battlefield of the battle of Bannockburn 1314

    Wee xx

    Good evening all,
Go she it is busy on here, lots to read, enjoying the divination from calories and exercise.
Amazon – 100 % agree that complex carbs and refined sugar are the problem but this may be a biased view because I love fat.
Smithy – glad to have you hear, no permission needed though, it’s a public sit you know. I am going on holiday at the end of Sept and October, cannot wait to get away. I am good at dieting on holiday, making wise choices, also easy as I will be active on both as one yoga and one bowls holiday. Not drinking helps too.
Weemam – been busy there pal, like you I talk to everyone and anyone, what are we like, enjoy your trip!
Hermajtomomi, now if we are talking funerals which is a bit depressing but does need to be considered. I am going out with a bank, ashes will go in a big firework rocket aimed over the channel at sunset.
I still colour my hair and adore painting my nails a variety of colours to match my outfit. Growing old disgracefully sounds perfect to me. I think next time we get approached in a store by spotty youth with no respect we should reply in a foreign language. For me that would be Spanish. We can say whatever we like, even recite a song or poem teehee.
Happynow – nice handle duck welcome to our thread.
Cheeseplease – my mother-in-law was always called ‘bab’ which I never understood until now as her name was Maud, she married into family from Northunbria who obviously used it as a term of endearment.
I personally call everyone ‘honey’ does that annoy you all? If so sorry.
    Jojo xx
P.s. I made cheese scones and toffee cake with chocolate fudge icing. But they were not for me, I had some friends coming to tea, the smell has been agony, I had two crumpets instead whilst I watched them consume my home baking. Life is sh** when you think of it as Good old Monty Python would have said. Needs must.

    Evening all.

I thought the Independent article was very interesting and it goes some way to explaining why heart disease and diabetes are on the increase. So many people buy low fat items because they have been led to believe that they are healthier when in fact they are stuffed with sugar to replace the flavour lost by the omission of fat.
It is a non fast day today but I have still had an eye on the calorie intake. I’ve had about 1500 and am still full. A friend and I went out for a walk and had a late lunch. I had to say no to a dessert (and I love desserts and puddings)because I was so full after a single course. I love the fact that this eating plan is helping me to recognise when I am hungry as opposed to thirsty or just being greedy, and when I’ve had enough. I never want to find myself in that eaten so much I feel ill situation again.
Jojo, I wouldn’t be able to bake for guests and not eat any of it so well done to you.
Smiffy, the thing I miss the most are roasted and salted nuts. I have no control so just don’t buy them. I still eat cake occasionally but in much smaller amounts and less often. Too much bread etc makes me feel bloated too.

    Hola, jojo!

Thanks for the explanation of bab, Cheeseplease. I suspect the unpleasant little madam at the Back to Backs wasn’t a Brummy. I’m not sure that staff have to be locals to work at a National Trust property. She just came as a shock after the incredible amount of help I’d had from her Scottish counterparts.

jojo -If the necessity should arise I can teach you some very, very rude words and deeply offensive words Spanish. So any spotty Spanish youths had better watch out. Spanish obscenities are a mixture of blasphemy and bodily functions. Some of the most foul-mouthed Spaniards are the Basques and that includes the women, especially the well-educated ones. They are also among the nicest people in Spain.

I had the good fortune to work with a lot of Basques when I worked for the Banco de Bilbao and I even went out with one or two. The saying goes that you can tell which town or village a Basque comes from by the name of the saint on whom he performs his natural functions – if you get my drift. As for a rocket shooting up over the Channel, what can I say but “Way to go, jojo”.

Amazon, I know exactly what you mean by having eaten so much you feel ill. Not nice at the time, but a worthwile learning experience and one more step towards healthy and measured eating. Having pigged out on something, you are unlikely to do the same any time soon. Call it instinctive portion control. Obviously 5:2 is working for you, which is great. 🙂 It does for most of us, although sometimes not as fast as we would like. 🙁

I had no concept of portion control, and I am certain that half of the time I ate for the sake of it. I am trying really hard to eat slowly and enjoy every mouthful. No more eating in front of the TV or the PC, or breakfast while walking around getting ready to go out. I am sitting at the table for every meal and paying attention to how I feel. If I am getting full I stop whereas before I would clear my plate regardless.
I know there will still be times when I stuff my face when I’m not hungry, but they will be rare occasions rather than a daily habit (fingers crossed)and we all deserve an edible treat now and again or life would be much less enjoyable.
As far as how long it takes is concerned, after years of losing weight and then gaining it all and more because I’ve failed to change my eating habits, I know that I’ll need to follow this plan forever. I weigh less than I have for over 10 years. My next goal is what I weighed 20 years ago!

Imright there with you amazon. Especially the treats. I’d be lying if I said I’m going all in on health and healing foods.

However, I feel I need to gain control over my weight, a personal goal to slim down to weight I was when I was 18 years fresh out high school. This may take awhile , I’m picking up tips and tricks . Really though it’s the food count that makes my scale move. I can eat too much health or healing foods and gain weight. No biggie, just makes the slim down take longer.

Can’t speak for anyone but myself. TDEE Everything gets close to the TDEE formula, but the math is sound and studies proven. Eat more than TDEE I gain. Eat less than TDEE I lose.
So I started counting my calories, at first on an app , but I’ve become so good at it I can just look at a plate and be very close every time. My tip is . Count grams of fats and proteins, but count calories of carbs. That cuts the learning curve way back. Just count the carbs. In that way if your carb menu has 800 calories of carbs aday. It doesn’t matter if it’s green beans or pistachio cake 800 is 800. In fact, there is no human requirement for carbohydrate. ZILCH! What there however is the glycemic index. Do you want carbs that gush sugars into the blood stream or trickle. Foods like oranges gush sugars and make my sugars spike. And I get hungry much quicker as opposed to oatmeal which trickles the sugars and I don’t get as hungry as soon. Yes I m diabetic and I eat oatmeal, but in small amounts on feed days. As I’m try to be low carb on feed days too. Starting to ramble.

I found that taking 4-6 months of counting carbs only got me to the point where I didn’t need apps anymore. I try to keep most meals around the 500 calories mark on feed days and 250 on fast days keeps it simple and easy to count.
The big meals and treats with friend and family. No I don’t count them , only because they are the exception these days.I enjoy the occasional treat. But I’m good enough at it enough to know. I know not to eat it on fast day, but on feed day , I get to let the good times roll.
Ice cream cone 400 calories. So I skip the bread and potatoes I skip the breads and potatoes and pasta a lot these days.

I like the simplicity of your maths, SAMM. 250 cal meals on fast days, 500 on non-fast days. With practice, it’s amazing the sort of delicious combination of protein, veggies and fruit you can put together at the cost of 500 cals. And of course we all deserve a treat now and then. It’s just a case of factoring it in and making adjustments during the days before or after the special meal. And even if you don’t, as the song says, pick yourelf up, dust yourself down, start all over again. Usually, any “damage” is soon repaired.

    Hi All,
Dinner was home made spicy squash soup followed by fruit salad with creme fraiche. 6700 steps today so far, a massive decrease on previous levels, following Doctors orders.

Amazon – not keen on cheese or toffee cake with chocolate fudge butter icing hence that is why I made these treats for my friends. Shame is the crumpets I bought myself were really rank, I won’t be eating the other two, waste if calories, dog treat now.
I generally observe portion control and I have hit 20 year ago size, heading to 25 years by Christmas, hence self control is high at the moment.

    Happynow, Como estas chica!

    Hermajtomomi,
I think it might be dangerous for me to learn swear words in Spanish as I have quite a few Spanish friends, I would not like to offend any of them, but maybe some language not used very much, how about Esperanto?

Goodnight all have a lazy Sunday

If it’s any help, Amazon, I’ve tried any number of diets. It has usually meant weeks of careful and often boring eating, losing a bit of weight and even getting almost slim. Then the whole thing falls apart. The only time I lost weight without having to try too hard was while living and working in France and Spain. But then, within weeks of returning to the UK the pounds were piling back on again.

That was until this way of eating. It’s been slow and has included a 5-month plateau, but in 19 months on 5:2 I’m now 30 lbs lighter and, as you hopefully will find, even if the scales don’t budge for a while, clothes will start fitting better or in many cases become so big and baggy the only place for them is the charity shop. Best of all, BP and cholesterol readings will go down. And you’ll start to like what you see in the mirror. 🙂 It’s worth remembering that 5:2 was originally devised to deal with a range of health issues. Weight loss was a very desirable side effect.

You seem to have got the hang of things. Just one last thought. If you DO blow it now and again, don’t beat yourself up. You’re only human. Anyhow, as we seem to agree, once you are accustomed to 5:2 overdoing it makes you feel so dreadful that you aren’t very likely to do it again any time soon.

In which case, jojo, I won’t teach you anything naughty.

Here’s a sweet little song you may already recognise. It used to be – and maybe still is – sung on Spanish TV by a bunch of cartoon kids in their jammies ready for bed to mark the watershed at 9 p.m.

    Vamos a la cama
    Para descansar,
    Para que mañana
    Podamos madrugar.

    Buenas noches, nena 🙂

    Hermajtomomi,
    Sweet,
    What tune ?
    Jojo xx

    Hermajtomomi,
Just noticed the time, don’t think I will be getting up early tomorrow as the song suggests. Not finished laminating and cutting up teaching resources for my daughter yet. What we do for love! Crazy!

As a retired teacher, hermaj, I thank you for helping your daughter! My family were often seconded to cut, glue, design and make crazy resources for me. Hi all fast trackers…hope the world is treating you kindly. PVE

Interesting conversation re talking to strangers.
I grew up all over Australia, rural, regional and big city. I talk to anyone, give everyone a cheery hello and strike up interesting conversations. I love the way total strangers try to find commonalities when briefly chatting.(like this forum)
My daughter, however, who grew up mainly in the big smoke, is horrified by the way I expect everyone to be friendly. I think the world of big cities is changing how people interact…stick to yourself, eyes down, iPod in the ears, mind your own business. Not a world I want to be in.
On our current travels across Aust it has been refreshing to find strangers greeting and talking as if old mates. PVE
PS Weemam, did you partake in the celebrations of the Battle of Bannockburn in July?

    Good morning all.

Jojo, my apologies for forgetting to thank you for allowing us refugees to find a home on this thread. It’s certainly a lovely bunch of people, even if much more self-disciplined than moi.

Hi Purple, I too have lived lots in the bush and always expect to chat to people I sit next to on the bus &c. but, as you say, most are engrossed in their music or phone or whatever. Our inner country bus trip to and from town used to be so lively as there was always at least one person you knew or you just struck up conversation with whoever sat next to you, and sometimes in front and behind as well. That life also involved making eye contact with everyone who passed and I remember being really surprised in Rome when I was frequently glared at for looking at people. Too many people jammed together makes everyone suspicious maybe.

Interesting discussion on endearments. My family came from Northants and I was intrigued to be called “m’duck” in shops and by distant rellies when I visited there – didn’t know it was a regional characteristic until now. Thanks for clearing up the mystery.

Last day of fine weather for a few days here so have cleared all the accumulated washing which is blowing on the line. Fasting tomorrow and Tuesday as usual and now actually look forward to it after 8 months of this way of living and 8.2kg of fat burnt (18lb for the non-metric), 1.5 clothing sizes and no especial hardship.

SAMM, really easy rule of thumb about meal sizes – so easy and so obvious once you mentioned it. Thanks!

Thanks for your cheery support and encouragement. Enjoy your Sunday all.

    Good morning all,
What a late start, I am getting like a teenager again, luckily the dogs are staying with my daughter so they have probably been out for an hour and are now sunning themselves in the garden.

I finished my unpaid classroom assistant chores at 2.30 am so I am sure I deserve the rest. I actually think there should be commercially produced planning packs in each school which could be added to as desired by teachers, they could rota projects by class. It’s a ridiculous waste of paper, time, ink and laminate not to mention display paper to start from scratch in every class every time the new project begins. I personally had a two year cycle of projects and stored resources. We are supposed to be recycling and teaching the next generation to be responsible citizens. Creativity has it’s place, perhaps an individually planned lesson occasionally which should then also go into the communal pot along with a reflective assessment of it’s impact or use.
If someone could add up the cost of this process in every school it would amount billions of pounds, ridiculous.

Talking about ‘talking to everyone’ and ‘holding eye contact’. I recently attended 5 days of ‘yoga laughter’. During this 30 minute slot each person has to meet and maintain eye contact with participants and pretend to laugh with everyone in the group. Some people found this very difficult but kept coming and made progress as the week went on and they gathered experience. It’s sad that we need to create this experience to help people connect and laugh but the health and well being effects of laughter cannot be underestimated. Look on line to see how the started in Mumbai by Dr Kerala – John Cleese did a documentary(famous Monty Python actor, hopefully internationally recognised) sorry I must learn how to put links on whilst I am currently on line.

I am going to the dump with garden rubbish today, hate that job, always attacked by holly or nettles, but today I will try to laughter it off. I think I may have an hours swim too. Life is precious make the most of it guys!

    Hi jojo,

Espero que hayas dormido bien. Right, that’s enough Spanish for the moment. 🙂

In answer to your query about the tune to the song, this might help, both with the song and other possible things for little kids to do:

    http://spanishplayground.net/spanish-song-for-kids-vamos-a-la-cama-que-hay-que-descansar/

It appears I got the first line of the song wrong, it should be:

    Vamos a la cama
    Que hay que descansar,
    Para que mañana
    Podamos madrugar.

although I think my version scans better.

I think there’s a very strong argument for using Spanish in the campaign to teach foreign languages to primary schoolchildren. In terms of prounciation, what you see is what you get, unlike French, which I love, but it does involve some fairly weird sounds that don’t always connect with what you see in writing. Probably, though, it doesn’t matter too much when teaching very littlies, who will be learning through listening, at least at the beginning.

As you may have found, Spanish is dead easy at the start. In a matter of weeks, students have enough to get by when in Spain. Of course, it suddenly becomes more difficult when they start throwing subjunctives about like they were going out of fashion.

Ho ho oh ha ha ha another 1/4 pound off, that 7. 5 lbs since the beginning of July, happy, happy happy. All time lowest since I was 35 ish. Ok it’s not my usual speed of loss, but hell it’s summer. Bbq’s and buffets are the curse of all dieters, not to mention bloody ‘lattes’. Which reminds me , is anyone dairy free? How is that working? I hear it’s incredibly good for clear skin. My daughter has always suffered from acne and at 27 is utterly sick of it, any ideas folks. I don’t think the Doctors idea, to be on antibiotics permanently is a very good idea (especially in teaching where it’s a germ breeding ground and you need a good immune system)
Hermaj, yes I love speaking and listening parts of learning a language but the bloody ‘grammar’ is a bugger. Gosh I am swearing a lot today, must try harder( now that is a teaching comment about me I lived with as a child, along with far too chatty in class, teehee)
Thanks for the link, how do you do it? Put a link in?

    Muchas Gracias amigas
    Hasta luego

    Hi Purple,

I think your very kind message about helping daughters in the classroom is addressed to the wrong lady. jojo’s the one helping her daughter to prepare for the new school term. She also has some interesting things to say about how much money gets wasted by education authorities in paying for stuff that could be shared and recycled among colleagues.

I’m also an ex-teacher. I wouldn’t say “retired”, though. I left teaching after a mixed 5-year career, the first third in a school for off-duty football hooligans for whom the idea of learning foreign languages was anathema, the remaining two-thirds in a highly academic private sector girls’ school, where I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

While as a left-leaning lady I felt a bit guilty about going into the private sector,I also I felt I was paying my debt to British society, which had paid for me to train, by spending 99% of my time actually teaching and only 1% on discipline, rather than playing policeman all the time and trying to stop the little, and not so little, perishers at my previous school from climbing out of the windows. 🙁 In the end I left on very good terms. I simply wanted to switch to the job I still do and absolutely love.

jojo, this is a major event. Someone is actually asking me, technoklutz extraordinaire, how to do techie stuff!! I may not be using the correct terminology, but this is how I did it.

Forgive me if the language sounds a bit patronising. I’m just explaining it to you as I would need it explained to me. When it comes to IT, I’m not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.

Before answering your question about music for the song, I searched online, on this occasion on YouTube. When I found a suitable piece, I clicked on the link as it appeared at the top of page (as the Fast Diet link is doing now), pressing Control C, to prepare it for copying. Then I started to type the post and inserted the link into the text by pressing Control V. As the meerkats would say “Simples!”

If you prefer, you can cut and paste the link onto the form – i.e. the one below all the posts – before you start to write your post, then simply work around it.

As for the swearing, it might be me putting the evil fluence on a usually polite lady through cyberspace. Sorry, Miss. Won’t do it again, Miss. 🙁

Well done on the weight loss. Sorry I can’t say anything useful about curing acne, but I bet some wise person will.

I’m not dairy free but I am lactose intolerant. After years of being told to “pull myself together” or to seek counselling, once the condition was diagnosed at the ripe old age of 39, I understood why I had felt unaccountably yuck so often for so long.

Mine isn’t a desperately serious case, but I do have to watch dairy. Ideally, on any one day I will try to stick to a maximum of two servings of ordinary milk (e.g if I’m out and about but I haven’t got my dairy-free version with me), cheese, yogurt, etc.

There are some poor souls who have to avoid dairy altogether. Life is very much easier for all of us now lactose-free milk and other products are available in most supermarkets. The milk’s fine, but some of the other lactose-free products are pretty revolting – especially the cheese.

Sorry jojo/hermaj over the mixup. I am having BIG eyesight problems, so limiting how well I am reading the threads before answering…always problematic.
Did another marathon drive today out to some ghost towns left over from the 1890s goldrushes here. It was meant to be a day off to rest from travelling across the country. Left eye nearly blind.
I look forward to reading your opinion on funding education jojo and, as a fellow leftie teacher hermaj, no wonder we hit it off!! G’night/morning P 🙂

    Afternoon all.
It’s a nice warm day here with a fair amount of sunshine which always makes me feel good.
I’ve had my Sunday brunch treat of a bacon sandwich, and paella is on tonight’s menu.

I did my workout this morning and then took a look at my new Kettlebell workout DVD.I’m going to have a go tomorrow and see how I get on. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this type of exercise so I’m looking forward to some hard work and reaping the benefits.

hermaj, I have been on every diet known to woman and they all work, but that is not the problem, it is going back to the old bad eating habits that piles all the weight back on again. That is what is so refreshing about this plan. Since I started it in April 2013 I have done really well in changing my eating habits. They aren’t perfect but they are getting there. I was initially very disappointed that I had put a stone back on after a lengthy holiday at the start of the year followed by various personal and health issues this year but then I realised that I was still 2 stone less than when I started. I had problems getting back into the routine until I looked at the calendar and counted 13 weeks until my holiday with a skinny friend!

I have been looking at this website for some time but only started posting a week or so ago. It is great to know there are so many 5:2ers out there having the same struggles, successes and failures as me. I have a couple of friend who would benefit in joining me but they’re not interested despite being very overweight and miserable with it, so having virtual dieting buddies is really helpful.

No problem, Purple, I just wanted to be sure that credit went where it was due. What and whom did you teach, i.e. what subject(s) and to what age group? Sorry to hear your eyes are playing up. Especially when you need them for exploring all the interesting places you describe and for writing entertaining and informative posts about all things Australian for the benefit of us Brits. I’d hate to think your eyes were suffering because people like me ask daft questions about snakes.

Hi Amazon, sorry I didn’t realise you were already an experienced 5:2er. Enjoy your bacon sarnie. I don’t think I could follow a regime that didn’t allow for the occasional bit of bacon. Have you tried the East London trick of sprinkling malt vinegar over the bacon before “closing” the sandwich? I recommended it to fellow bacon-lovers on the forum and at least one or two seemed to like it.

Pre 5:2, what really got my goat was the fact that although I was careful what I ate and that I had, and still have, the good fortune not to have a sweet tooth, and as a non-driver I did a lot of walking, I still looked as though I lived permanently crashed out on the sofa in front of the telly munching cream buns, alternated with a pork pie or three. It was particularly annoying when doctors wasted valuable consulting time haranguing me about eating stuff I hadn’t touched in donkey’s years. Giving up smoking 12+ years ago didn’t help, although I took great care not to eat to replace the ciggies.

I’m guessing that it’s the intermittent fasting that has done the trick, changing metabolic rate and so on. Sorry, I’m no scientist. Also what makes it doable is the fact that you don’t have to be too strict on non-fasting days, without going mad that is, although even that isn’t irreparable. Not like other weight-loss schemes when you are half-starved for days, even weeks, on end and the scales won’t budge and you chuck the diet book out of the window and stuff your face with anything in sight!

I ve done more than my share of stuffing my face. I’d be lying if i say I don’t stuff my face any more.
The thing is with the IF and ADF the face stuffings don’t have as much impact for me. I’ve been “careful” with my food choices for 1 year 6 months and I’ve lost more dieting weight loss than any other diet I have been on. It’s not all been dieting though, my job I sell Ted because it increased my N.E.A.T. And I’m trying to stay on my feet for as long as possible. Increased my vo2 max. So when I sprint at work , I’m never out of breath. It’s the diet though! Some of the people I work right along side, eat like it’s their meal, and they are gaining weight. They say they need the energy, I say sure you do! But not so much.

Basically I have taken to heart the information in micheal Mosley’s video. The truth about exercise. I walk off my morning and lunch Is bigger fat sink. Also I try to do HIIT. And then eat a light meal.

It’s not very complicated, until I start to tailor it to mine own schedule and trends for success. After the learning phase of what not to eat or when not to eat. I order most of my foods to be delivered. So don’t walk down the cookie aisles if you know what I mean. Shopping was as big an issue. For me as anything else. No buffet this Sunday. Just a lot of weight lifting and foods that help maintain muscle.

    Keepin on Keepin on

hermaj, a survey of vegetarians who were previously meat eaters came up with the result that the thing they missed the most was a bacon sarnie!
I would imagine that the acidity of vinegar enhances the flavour of bacon. I usually spread my bread with brown sauce but I might give the vinegar a try.
SAMM, I find it easier to exercise on an empty stomach so I exercise first thing in the morning. I have only myself to please and I don’t work so it is easy for me to organise my day around the exercise, although occasionally I fail to get out of bed in time to exercise when I am going out for the day!
I think the 5:2 journey is slightly different for all of us, what works for me might not work for you or anyone else, but we just have to keep trying until we find what is most effective. You seem to have that worked out, so well done and I hope the weight loss continues.

    Good afternoon all,
I have just had a lovely time at the shops, would you believe looking for ‘Pirate’ Resources for a role play area., not much found ( seriously !) Why is that a Reception class topic?) I gave up and bought my daughter a ceramic pan, we all need one in our lives if for no other reason than they are so easy to clean and you need the merest knob of butter for cooking. I also bought a huge vase at the bargain price of £12.99 to combine four orchids into one pot. They look much better and don’t take up as much room. I wonder if there is a collective noun for orchids, an orchcadia perhaps? Just being silly forgive me!
I did some ‘window shopping’ of clothes in the next size down(14), strangely nothing I liked. Would you believe it, the things I liked best were in size 24 which is where I was at a year ago. This came as a bit of a surprise to me as I always thought
I was settling for any I tent I could fit into and still breath.

SAMM – I am having some real reservations about calories used during exercise. My health is causing me to drastically cut back yet I am now losing 1/4 to 1/2 daily, it’s madness. I certainly never did hit anyway, too much for me, both lungs felt they would burst. Saying that I would kill to do an hour walk now. Limited to 15 mins standing, sure makes shopping quick.I also get food shopping delivered from a Tesco, choosing a £1.00 delivery slot and he brings it right upstairs to my kitchen table, bless him.

To all – Change in diet for the the better, for good

I think we all need to change our eating habits and tastes, sorry but it is necessary if we don’t want to be on a diet for the rest if our lives. I have made so many changes that my eating habits simply do not reflect my previous life. You give up things for long enough and it becomes a way of life you accept. I like to think of myself as an athlete( figuratively only), if I eat healthy foods my body will perform better and I will win the race. It is, after all, your race for life. Of course it’s a hurdles race but I have now knocked over many of my biggest fences (stubborness, aerobic exercise, carbohydrates and sugar) and the track is getting easier. Gosh I am being philosophical today? Just tell me to shut up, I can take it.

After 8 months and trying most variation of fasting I am now having two meals on fast days and three on non fast days. I honestly don’t have any stress about hunger any more because I have my little snack boxes always ready, weighed and counted. In one I have three bread sticks( crunchy), in another I have a sliced Jaffa orange, next I have 3 prunes, next 30 g of almonds and finally carrot sticks. I can have any two of these on fast days and all five on feed days if I want them. Keeps me out of the biscuit tin guys. Try it! I get them ready each night before bed.

Ahoy me hearties , time to walk the plank. (go for a swim anyway)

Amazon, having just surveyed myself (a veggie albeit a pescatarian one) I can report I do not miss bacon sarnies even when my OH cooks himself a fry up for breakfast. This is of course an unrepresentative and highly biased sample! However, don’t know if you saw Dr MM’s recent Horizon programme about eating red meat, but the upshot seemed to be that the ingredient that was the devil incarnate was bacon- destined to reduce your life by x amount – or maybe it just feels like it for bacon lovers! Anyhow, as someone who hopes to get some additional health benefits from this WOE I am not going to sabotage it for the sake of some bacon :-))

Jojo, have you tried eBay for new togs? I have been running amok lately, a new cardie for £2.71, a Boden top for £7.01, I am getting addicted to it.

    Happy rest of Sunday. X

Cheeseplease, I’m sure that there are plenty of vegetarians out there who don’t miss bacon!
I didn’t see the Horizon programme, I am notorious for being able to miss the few things on TV that are worth watching.

    Cheeseplease,
Also addicted to Ebay, bought a lovely Next jacket last week.
Trying to stay on a budget though, it’s very tempting
I also go to charity shops once per week. I also stopped eating bacon recently, just getting used to it, previously a weekly treat on Sundays.
I think Michael’s documentary related to all salted and processed meats. He did insist his own family cut back on bacon. His kids were eating it as a daily snack between meals.
    Jojo xx

I see opinions on bacon vary and having watched the Horizon documentary I’m aware that it is now seen as potentially dangerous.

I don’t know about the survey results, but I’m inclined to believe them as I have known a lot of vegetarians who are either tempted to jump or actually do fall off the wagon for a bacon sarnie.

On the basis of one bacon sarnie a week, if I, or any one else, were to eat one once a week for the next twenty years, based on the theory put forward on Michael’s documentary, it would shorten my life by about 8 months. That’s based on one serving of bacon reducing human life by one day. But my maths are rubbish. That doesn’t allow for going without bacon for weeks at a time as often happens.

Strangely enough, the thought of a full English, particularly for breakfast, makes my stomach flip in a not very pleasant way, even the smell would have me running from the room. Weird, or what?

I can well understand Michael laying down the law if the kids are eating bacon as a daily between-meals snack. But I think I’ll continue to have the odd sarnie – with malt vinegar, although brown sauce works well too, Amazon, but I suspect vinegar is a wee bit more subtle. Worth a try, anyway

In my own defense, I would point out that I don’t drink alcohol, which is so often condemned for all the nasty things it can lead to. Not that I’m a spoil-sport or a killjoy as people have accused me of being when I refuse a drink, (why do they do that? They don’t shout at non-smokers, do they!) it’s just that as soon as I gave up the ciggies 12+ years ago, wine started to taste like vomit, G&T – my previous favourite – like something you would use to clean the loo and I’d never liked beer anyway. I realised that the drink was only an excuse to have a ciggy, and if the fags were to go the booze would go too.

    JoJo ,
Did y’all know that acne can be a symptom of gluten intolerance?
Especially if it’s not only on the face.

Though not an indicator .no. Test other than going gluten free for thirty days.

I kind love bacon , bit knowing the harm the nitrates can do , I don’t buy it myself anymore. Unless I’m at 24hrs place , I love eating a huge omelet with bacon and cheese, and mushrooms and green peppers, and onions, and tobacco sauce. When I eat the bacon that way it doesn’t quite seem so evil.
But no more whole plates of it at the sunday buffet. I want those days to be gone forever.

How does one go about proving that bacon shortens your life? I suppose someone will tell me I should have watched the programme, lol!

People getting upset when you refuse a drink says more about them than it does about you.

Since I went out for breakfast and chose the full veg option which was fabulous I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy a full English again.
