  • Evening all from Melbourne.
Great to see you back regularly Nicky, missed your nuggets and humour!
Penti, please don’t think I am being a smarty pants, but do you mean prone to ‘hypoglycaemia’ (as in low blood sugar) or hyperglycaemia? (I have been called the ‘spelling police’ on this forum once long ago!) If this isn’t an ‘official’ medical condition you have, you may actually surprise yourself with what you can achieve fasting. When I first started, I sometimes felt wobbly when I went long periods without food. However after a few months, I think my body got used to having to fend for itself, or simply got more efficient when looking for glucose for energy and concentration. I never, ever feel shaky now, and can (and have) gone 24 hrs on water and coffee alone. As I said, please don’t take this the wrong way. We are all here to share and learn from each other! You will learn a lot from the ‘old hands’ on here, such as Bayleaf, Happy and Purple. They have all learnt from hard won experience and we all benefit from it.

    Hi PVE,
Life is definitely not fair on the gender genes and calorie burning. I am active 70 % of everyday ( average 15,000 steps) whereas my husband is lucky to do 3000 steps and although he only usually has one meal per day it is always high fat and high calorie. My food is always low fat and calories, usually one snack and one meal but I never go over 1200 cals( this is my maximum burn, tried and tested over the last two years. Unlike you I don’t cut my TDEE on Fast days, stick with 500, maybe it’s time I did?
I won’t be going back to my flat for the next 6 months because I need to decluttering, and major renovations to my house. I need to be here to organise everything. My husband and I plan to sell it when it is done as it is too big for him to stay in alone. The maintenance on big properties is so time consuming and expensive. So I will be risking the rental market again but this time I will be here to check the new tenants.
On the plus side I can strongly recommend deep cleaning, decorating and carpet cleaning as an excellent work out. With daily bowls and dog walking I am on the go for a good 10 hours per day.
Sarah, I definitely have a better immune system now than when I was teaching. I survived 16 flights without catching a cold( remarkable) with all the coughing going on around me.
    Nicky
I agree socialising is my fasting life challenge, I go out a lot, eat out at least three times per week. I try to order healthy meals but it is difficult to accurately count the calories if you don’t prepare the meal.
But I am not complaining, feeling well even though awaiting gall bladder surgery and still enjoying retirement.

    Hi Everyone,
So much amazing information on this thread! I read and try to internalize it all and so much of it is very helpful.

Please know that even if I don’t comment on each contribution, I am appreciative of it all.

Good fast day yesterday – went over a little bit in the evening but not too bad, ended at about 600 calories. Good start today, and busy and away from home most of the day, all to the good. Teaching two classes, volunteer work this afternoon and then going out to a live performance tonight (Of Mice and Men – have seen it in many iterations over the years but still looking forward to this particular production).

Penti, no worries, now I get what you meant about the “blog” and I will read profile info. Jojo honestly I don’t know where you find the energy for all that you do, but I’m glad for you. Everyone – thank you for sharing your experiences and insights.

Take care and good luck to everyone today,
    prana

Nama you are correct it is hyperglycaemia…I spell poorly always have. No I’m not ‘sick’ from this, not at all. No. Perhaps I could try ‘no food’ for longer periods of time, but my training for years was to eat correctly and often….weeeeeellll clearly I took this medical advice to heart…just didn’t watch the volume of food I was consuming in relation to my exercise… and totally didn’t watch the alcohol intake grow over the years. It IS a drug after all.

    hmmmmmmm

Fast friends continuous improvement is the option and we must maintain the study of one for our own development to know the optimum level we can go to. Is it a 24hour water and black coffee only fast or is it a 3 day water only fast or a 4 day liquid only fast? Is it 5-2 or 4-3 or Alternate Day Fast ADF or can you manage a longer eating window than 16-8 18-6 19-5 20-4 etc we are masters of our own destiny people get amongst it 😆 and
“Remember that reserve of fat you have on your body already and realise you actually don’t need food, you just want it.”
“Our objective on a fast day is to achieve as long a fasting window as possible”

The less you eat the more you lose.
“It is easier to avoid eating than to stop eating once started”

    Peace RT

    Morning all!
Penti I think most of us on here with (over)weight issues were brought up to eat ‘correctly’ (3 meals/day, always eat everything on your plate, starving children in India etc etc) and a lot of our problems stem from this! Without the encouragement of this forum, I would never have given up breakfast and consider it a ‘weekend treat’ only. I always used to wake up really hungry, could not imagine facing the day without fuel.
My mother had some sort of misguided parenting guilt and would often bring us breakfast in bed, including grilled lamb chops!! But she had been brought up on a farm, milking cows early each morning, before a cooked breakfast. As I said, misguided. But I don’t blame her, she only did it out of love. I make my own really yummy meusli, but when I calculated the number of calories in a bowl, I realized I just could not ‘afford’ it every day, hence its a weekend treat now. Lots of us find by delaying the start of eating each day, its much easier to eat less.
Be patient with yourself you newbies, it took us all a long time to get heavy!
Thanks for the morning pep talk RT! The XR6 is having a review of her gear box today – please say 3 Hail Mary’s for her! Then new tyres this afternoon, so thats a big chunk of our resources gone….
Have a great day all, good luck to Thursday fasters.

    Hello Fasters

The wisdom is flowing recently and these reminders are great.
I have been experimenting with midday to midday water only fasts to try to fit in with social commitments. It is a sort of ADF, but I am on a rhythm of 3 meals in two days. A timely reminder, RT, about leaving eating as long as possible.
The no (or little) flour, sugar eating habit also makes me feel great.

I am not losing weight as fast as I was, but I feel focused and can fit in social commitments (1 kg per fortnight)
I have not been much on the forum as I am making use of Wellington hills and water to keep my exercise up. We do not have a car and live over a kilometre up a hill from the train, so every trip out ends with a walk. My fitbit remains a wonderful motivation for moving, and although as I planned, I did not get my next distance badge 5 days ago as I lost the charger. I am 10 kilometres from walking 1600km in the last year. Like you, Purple, 15K steps is not unusual though my minimum is 12K. This distance also entails of walking up 200m of altitude minimum over the day. My bad knee is much better and not an issue as in October in Oz.
In the past year according to fitbit I’ve walked 2.6 million steps and 1600km, up 20k metres and burnt 740k calories. It comes to a very unspectacular 4km a day!
I must do better!! I am trying to swim 3km a week and many lengths as fast as possible.

I did feel after a 26 hour water only fast that swimming became a bit more difficult.
What I am saying is that even though I am overweight that running(swimming) on the reserve tank is harder than 25 kg more ago.

My daughter put a picture of a daffodil from her garden in Rome on FB and I am reminded that spring in the NH is coming!
We leave NZ in a month.
The house we are buying, Nama is 70km north of Wellington in a warmer place. It’s a typical NZ bach (weekender) about 2km from the beach. On the Monopoly board, it is definitely Old Kent road! Ultimately, we will remove the house and put another one on! You can buy seconhand houses in NZ and they get brought on a truck in one or two parts.
I hope things are working out for you, Aussie Oma. Being between jobs is not an easy situation.
Good to have you on board, Penti and Prana, your contributions energize me.

    XX Wiwi

    Evening All,
Prani- I always have friends who say that! If only energy levels were linked to calorie burning I would be well away. Just got home and putting my feet up for an hour until I hit the sack. I also love to read at night and early morning so I do get downtime.

I really, really want to get back to my lowest weight because I feel really sluggish. Mind you it’s also tiredness from my hectic schedule.

    Tips for fasting
Drink lots of water, use zero noodles instead of other carbs, use soup to provide a low calorie treat, eat fruit sparingly especially on fast days, eat lots of veg and limit proteins to 3 oz per meal. Limit alcohol. Sleep in a comfy bed, I recommend a topper if your mattress is old or too hard. Count your calories use Fitness Pal. Use a pedometre and make sure you do a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. Good Luck!

Pent, my husband had been an insulin dependent diabetic for 10 years. Once he started 5:2 in 2013, he realised it was by following the traditional advice to eat regularly that caused his bloodsugar to rise. He has reversed his Type 2 diabetes and takes no diabetic drugs at all. He tests his bloodsugar every morning and, if it is a bit elevated, he simply doesn’t eat. Fasting allows your body to heal. Cut down the number of times you eat each day as well as each pprtion size, gradually. Talk yourself into waiting “just one more hour”, have a glass of water. You’ll be surprised how good your body gets at using up it’s own stores instead of demanding more.
    All the best. P 😊

    Hi World,
I am in agreement with you all. I thought I was hyperglycmic. But that is because I was eating carbs and sugars. I went to a nutritionist and I switched to protien, veggies, and fat. My brain fog left me. Then I lost 20 pounds. Then I joined 5:2 and lost my last 7. This wol is a habit. Finished off my second fast day for the week. I am proud of everyone here. Thank you for the encouragement. One day I will post in the morning and not before bed. I would like to write more, but I am to tired.
Nama- how did it go with the tires?

    Sarah,

That’s a very important point re: carbs and sugar. When I began 5:2 I too thought I couldn’t go without food all day. And indeed I did have to eat something to stop feeling dizzy and ill. Reducing processed carbs and sugars on non-fast days has made a huge difference, and now it’s very easy to go without food…which I must say is great! There are times when circumstances result in me not having eaten and fimding myself somewhere where food choices are poor or non-existent. Previously I would have eaten the cr*p or panicked! Now I’m liberated from the mindless need to eat and in control.

Also adequate liquid intake is really important. We get most of our water from the food we eat, so when we don’t eat we need to compensate and drink a lot more.

    Hi Fasttrackers,
I agree with Happy and PVE,
Water is the top priority then portion control, try using a tea plate.
A friend at bowls hasn’t changed his food groups just his plate size, he has lost 28 lbs in eighteen months and feels great. He did switch beer to wine spritzer which is hilarious in our circles. His male colleagues give him a hard time until he reminds them that he no longer has a life threatening paunch like most of them. They go very quiet.
I still haven’t cracked this way of life even though I have been doing it two years but I keep trying to stay on the wagon. I still gain if I don’t control non fast days. I can at least say my fast days are usually successful. Now to cut the calories on fast days to 350, that’s my challenge next week.
Off to Rock Choir today, it always cheers me up, then bowls. I am taking the afternoon off from decorating as my body needs a break but I will do a few hours this evening. Hopefully I will get the kitchen finished and it will be back on the market on Monday.

All these words of wisdom are a great help to me today, I’ve had a few lapses since my birthday on Monday but I feel inspired to give today my best shot. Starting the day with just coffee and don’t intend to eat until after 6pm when I will have a small portion of beef stew (without carbs) that I’m about to put in the slow cooker. Not an official FD but a day to prove to myself that I have the discipline to control my destiny!!

Good morning (night?) all, again so much information and experiences to reflect upon.
I spent the morning assessing my relationship with food, my love affair, my enjoyment, and now my addiction and how it has evolved over the years. As a young woman (and as an old Californian hippy) fasting was a regular part of my life…10/14-day non-food fasts every 2-3 months was a common practice for me ‘n my steadfast girlfriends. Never when I was pregnant or nursing (which seemed like all the time for a few solid years) but after those back-to-back baby making years, I fasted even when I was working physically hard (ditch digging kind hard) for 6-8 hours straight. After day-3 fasting was pretty easy. So what’s changed? Back then food was not a focus, at all, but rather surviving as a single-mom was my focus, paying bills, raising children, mountain climbing whenever I got a chance and stopping the Vietnam War. Hmmmm
Those years I ate food to be able to function as a human being, not to soothe some hurt feelings or to comfort me. Slowing decade after decade my relationship with food changed and physical activity slowed at the same time; a lethal combination for a healthy-happy body and mind.
Well, like with any bad habit, first comes the recognition and acknowledgement of the wrong behaviour, second comes the commitment to change it and finally one takes the actions to correct the imbalance. They say if you repeat a new habit for 28-days it becomes imbedded. So here I go to correct my bad habits. I’m excited and apprehensive at the same time. I have a picture in my mind’s-eye and imagine what will it look and feel like to achieve my goals each week and my ultimate goal on 23rd July, lovely like sucking slow on a hard butterscotch candy. (oops probably an inappropriate analogy)……sigh….. this will be a bit of work for me I think….a candy analogy? really now!
Bye for awhile and stay strong folks

Brilliant post and self analysis, Pent.😁 Sounds very familiar!
Now you have started, you are on the road to a new life. And as one who has been on this wol heading towards 3 years, it is TOTALLY life changing. Enjoy the ride. 😆 P

For our fast trackers who are struggling a little to get their fasting mojo back and think there are having a bad day this is for. 😉
So You Think You’re Having a Bad Day?
Fire authorities in California found a corpse in a burned-out section of forest while assessing the damage done by a forest fire. The deceased male was dressed in a full wet suit, complete with scuba tanks on his back, flippers, and face mask.
A postmortem test revealed that the man died not from burns, but from massive internal injuries. Dental records provided a positive identification. Investigators then set about to determine how a fully clothed diver ended up in the middle of a forest fire.
It was revealed that on the day of the fire, the man went diving off the coast, some 20 miles from the forest. The fire fighters, seeking to control the fire as quickly as possible, had called in a fleet of helicopters with very large dip buckets. Water was dipped from the ocean and emptied at the site of the forest fire.
You guessed it. One minute our diver was making like Flipper in the Pacific, the next, he was doing the breast stroke in a fire dip bucket 300 feet in the air. Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. but keep reading….
Still think you ‘re having a bad day?
A man was working on his motorcycle on the patio, his wife nearby in the kitchen. While racing the engine, the motorcycle accidentally slipped into gear. The man, still holding onto the handlebars, was dragged along as it burst through the glass patio doors. His wife, hearing the crash, ran in the room to find her husband cut and bleeding, the motorcycle, and the shattered patio door. She called for an ambulance and, because the house sat on a fairly large hill, went down the several flights of stairs to meet the paramedics and escort them to her husband. While the attendants were loading her husband, the wife managed to right the motorcycle and push it outside. She also quickly blotted up the spilled gasoline with some paper towels and tossed them into the toilet. After being treated and released, the man returned home, looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle. He went into the bathroom and consoled himself with a cigarette while attending to his business. About to stand, he flipped the butt between his legs. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard a loud explosion and her husband screaming. Finding him lying on the bathroom floor with his trousers blown away and burns on his buttocks, legs and groin, she once again phoned for an ambulance. The same paramedic crew was dispatched. As the paramedics carried the man down the stairs to the ambulance they asked the wife how he had come to burn himself. She told them. They started laughing so hard, one slipped, the stretcher dumping the husband out. He fell down the remaining stairs, breaking his arm.
    Still having a bad day?
Just remember, it could be worse… The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill inAlaska was $80,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both..
Surely you’re not still having a bad day?
A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his Walkman.
Two animal rights protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn , Germany . Suddenly, all two thousand pigs broke loose and escaped through a broken fence, stampeding madly. The two hapless protesters were trampled to death.
    What?! STILL having abad day??
Iraqi terrorist Khay Rahnajet didn’t pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back with ‘return to sender’ stamped on it. Forgetting it was the bomb, he opened it and was blown to bits.
    There now, feeling better?

Have a happy weekend all you beautiful losers 😉
    Peace RT

LOL, RT. Love the Friday jokes.

Great post, Pent. You are well on the way to a new you. And amazing that you were following a similar wol in your earlier days.

I bought a ‘new’ skirt from the op shop yesterday – a size 8 !! It fits when I turn the waistband in, so there’s a goal, for it to fit. Still losing the holiday kilo or two. And a certain pair of earrings will match the skirt perfectly, Jojo 🙂

Happy birthday for Monday, Iona. 🙂

Just back from a swim – a new Friday routine (my day off – love it). Have a good Friday, all.

Hi Everyone, Early Friday morning here. Fast day went well yesterday until early evening when I returned from the yoga class I have been attending for the past two weeks. It was a strength class and quite a workout. Very hungry and although planning not to eat at all, had a large bowl of beef vegetable soup. And a slice of baguette. Yikes. So yesterday was a TDEE day instead of a fast day and my fast day has been rescheduled for today.

Today I teach a gentle yoga class (mat class for older people/beginners) and then two senior yoga classes (chair and standing balance poses also for older people). Tonight I attend a restorative yoga class at another yoga studio. It’s all about stretching and relaxation, massage happens in the middle, there is candlelight and live music. Have not attended this before but looking forward to it.

I treat myself to coffee at our neighborhood coffee shop about once a week and that’s where I am now. In the past coffee shop coffee was a large latte alongside a toffee biscotti. For the past few weeks my coffee order has been (and will be forevermore, I hope) an extra large americano (espresso and hot water) and no biscotti in sight. I find since I’m used to drinking coffee and tea without milk, I don’t miss the milk in the latte at all.

Watched the documentary Fed Up yesterday. Wow. I had read about it but seeing it was amazing. Makes one never want to eat sugar again. I knew that hidden sugar is in many food products, but still, wow. I try to use few processed foods and cook very simply, but I’m sure we are still eating sugar that we are barely aware of. I don’t know if the film is available in your countries, but I recommend it if it is. One disturbing fact from the film was that in the US we don’t have the percentage of the daily recommended allowance of sugar listed next to sugar on food labels, as we do for fat and other nutrients. I hope that can change – I think it might help consumers to see that a food product has 200 times the recommended daily allowance of sugar per serving, for example.

Good luck to everyone today, fasters and non-fasters alike. Take care, prana

RT- you are the tonic I needed. Stayed in bed today, very poorly since yesterday morning. Off to the Doctor now.
Great to hear from you Barata, skinny size 8? Gracious. Glad the earrings will get an airing. I have been wearing my three pairs( not altogether) since I returned. They have been much admired by my English buddies. I love glass earrings and particularlyTracyH kiwi ones. PVE three years fasting, great news, you old hand.

    Hi Jo,

Sorry to hear you’ve been ill. Is it your gallbladder or something else? Hope the doctor helped!

    RT,

How’s Mrs RT getting on? Sorry if you’ve posted an update recently and I’ve missed it (quite a small screen on my phone so easy to miss posts).

Oh, Jojo, hope it doesn’t keep you down for long.

I’m not getting excited about the size 8. Last time I was in that shop looking for skirts I had to try on an 8 to get the right size – was the wrong cut so not purchased. Now I need a top to match 🙂

It is interesting to review how the eating habits have changed, Prana. It’s been a slow evolution since September 2013, but now there is almost no bread in my diet – so if the guys want home-made bread at the weekend, they know where the breadmaker is – fewer potatoes, pasta and rice, and at least four days a week when I have no breakfast, including FDs. Nibbles are nuts, 72% chocolate, and {{ ice cream }} – with you there, Wee. 🙂

Wiwi and her OH are joining us for a bbq tomorrow evening – looking forward to that. I have been stirred to dust off the vacuum cleaner and work out what it is for 🙂

    Hi Barata,

Good luck with the vacuum cleaner! I share my house with cats, so know what that’s for…but as for the iron!?

I started 5:2 a little over 2 years ago, and am surprised to find my food choices and eating habits continue to change. Luckily I’m flexible and adaptable enough to embrace it, but some people seem much more habituated/ institutionalized and resistant. For example, my Dad does 2 24 hour fasts each week, yet on a non-fast day he still panics if he misses out on a lunch! ‘I was due to leave the house at 2 but I couldn’t becausew I realised I hadn’t eaten’, ‘but were you hungry?’, ‘ No, but it was past lunchtime…’ I just can’t explain to him how to let the intermittent fasting mentality spill over into normal days!

    Have fun with Wiwi!

That’s really interesting that he can live with two completely different mindsets, Happy. How long has he been fasting?

Sorry to hear you are poorly again, Jo. I hope the doc visit was fruitful.
Barbara and Happy, I’m with you on food choices and flexibility. We do similar to you Barbara, but no chocolate. 😡
We are driving today and going out tonight, so jumped in the car early with just a black coffee each and headed off. We actually discussed, Happy, how in the past we would have had something before we left and would have taken food to eat on a 4 hour road trip. Now, we can’t even imagine why we would think we would starve without food for half a day! Your dad clearly hasn’t got there yet…but then he IS the cheesecake man. 😉 He’s done well, really.
As I’ve said before, we don’t need to eat, we just want to eat.
Have a good weekend folk. P

That’s right, the Cheesecake Man ! Not a newcomer, then.

We also have a cat, Happy, part Maine Coon so long-haired, but has completed his moult now. He has been seen on FB.

B, our long haired cat lost the winter coat over the months we were away. Brilliant! The house sitters had to deal with all that fur! 😊
No whales at our beach place today, but a gentle ocean breeze, 24 deg and waves crashing on the shore. Bliss. Got to love home. 😁 P

Today is weigh-in day; I’m going to Vet scales naked I’m determined to see some results!!… AND it’s also the first months measurement day…the truth be told.

Yesterday a successful FD 480-cal AND doubled my ‘steps’ yesterday too! Reading all your talk about counting steps encouraged me.. So there I was on the hillside trying with intense frustration to figure them out with pen & paper… Well finally the slow Dong of the ‘early-elderly’ mind-bell rang in my head and suggested I download an APP on my phone…a….duh…
This one even changes my caloric burn when I go up and down hills. I LOVE it. Thanks folks.

Hi Happy thank you um Mrs RT has completely fallen off the 5-2 so I have not been actively employed nor engaged as the life style coach at the present time with 2 funerals for immediate family this year already and our 4th son moving out on the 20th Feb for University he has always lived at home he will be 20yo on the 10/10 this year um y-fee has started smoking again so some fences to mend and bridges to build im afraid 😥
    RT

Oh RT, I’m sorry I asked! And Mrs RT was doing so well. Well she knows it works, so hopefully when her head’s in the right place she’ll come back to it.

There are a lot of re-starters on the forum (“lost 10kg last year, went on holiday, didn’t fast, put the weight back on, ready to lose it and keep it off this time”), so Mrs RT isn’t alone.

    Barata,

Sorry for the delayed response, I went to bed. Yes, Dad’s been on his cheesecake and wine 5:2 for nearly two years now. Maintaining about 30lb loss, BP down, arthritis improved, waist now half his heart, mentally sharper than ever. He’s in his 80s, so I shouldn’t complain!

Happy, no apology needed, I knew it was your bedtime. Well done, your Dad! Now it’s my bedtime. I’m finding a pinch of melatonin is helping with my sleeping, but still getting very tired during the weekend when I stop! I
took my elderly aunt out this afternoon (she does so enjoy this). She’s getting frailer and frailer, seems to be shrinking away.

Mrs RT will be back on 5:2 in due course. Some things just need time, and with so much happening it’s not the right time just now for her. 🙂

I hope your vet is happy for you to be weighing on the clinic scales in your birthday suit, Pent.. Best of luck.

P, we are so lucky to live in such a peaceful part of the world. We are enjoying an unusually calm and warm period, no rain in site so have been watering the veges.

    Sleep well Barata!

I’m very jealous. A (part) Maine coone… I love a big cat. And vegetables…roll on our NH growing season!

    Morning/evening all,

Got home 2 hours ago and I’m freezing as it is more than 20° colder than in Cambodia.
It was wonderful and I did really well as far as eating is concerned. I skipped breakfast on several days, and no lunch on a couple of occasions. I didn’t snack apart from the last day which was no mean feat as I was usually the only person on the bus who wasn’t grazing!
More later as I’m too tired at the moment and my body clock is in the wrong time zone.

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Welcome back Amazon,
I am with you on feeling cold, after three months in Southern Hemisphere my body refuses to acclimatise. My friends are very worried about me ‘being cold all the time’ it’s just not me. I am wearing thermals on my dog walks for goodness sake, usually only used for snow trekking.
Happy and PVE – Sadly I had a flare up of gall bladder problems for the last two days, didn’t even make my doctors appointment as I couldn’t get out of bed in the afternoon and evening. Fasting, painkillers and a hot water bottle were the only remedy. Feel a bit more human today but a shadow of my former self. Very low energy, but I am forcing myself out today, more painting to do and out for a meal this evening( I will probably just have soup, don’t feel like eating) but it’s a birthday event for my hubby so I feel I must make the effort. Glad I bought him tickets to a play in March because I would not have been up to hours in a theatre.
Just read ‘The Silent Tide’ by Rachel Hore- very well written book about women and their careers in literature/ publishing in the 30’s and development through the years. It reminded me of my maiden Aunt who lost her fiancé in WW2 and decided to become a career woman in the Civil Service( much to her families dismay) she stayed single and travelled the world on her own. How I admired her courage, she inspired me to travel alone from age 19(albiet mostly in Europe) and I can honestly say I have enjoyed these times, now to plan another big trip next year when my house is sold. There is so much to see, I can hardly wait. How was Cambodia Amazon?

Another pound off today but progress although slow this year is in the right direction, but my trousers are still very tight, probably doesn’t help my health.

Barata I have included bread again this year because my other food choices are so limited but I really need to exclude it again. Must plan my meals more carefully, it’s too easy to have soup and bread or poached egg on toast( just plain lazy at the moment) still in fish and veg for main daily meal. The best change I have made in the last two years is halving the protein quantity and doubling the veg( not potato). I am back on breakfast now because porrige is good for reducing cholesterol levels. So my five hour eating window ( fast days) is 8 – 1 pm. Non fast days I might eat as late as 5 pm so not really 19/5, but if possible I have porrige later ( lunch) to reduce hours of eating.

Weight loss last 7-days: 2lbs-4oz, just over a kilo. Hot damn! ….now for next week!
and I kept all me clothes on.

Welcome Penti, probably wise to weigh clothed when in public. Maybe you should invest in some scales at home, you could maybe see a 3 lb loss.

Welcome back and happy belated birthday, Amazon. Sounds like your Cambodia trip was brilliant.
For the record, I’ve had no trouble adjusting to “our” weather after Christmas /New Year in the frozen north 😉 Rememeber you burn more calories trying to keep warm. 😊
Off for a beach walk. Have a great day/ night all. P

Welcome back, and birthday greetings, Amazon.

The cat featured on FB last June, Happy, in all his winter fluff.

Hello again, hopped on the scales after a month or so of not ( who I am kidding it has been around three months) of not even trying to adhere to 5:2. Weight has basically maintained which is good but need to set my sight towards a ten kilo loss and beyond! Have had my first week at new school. All is good , very busy and the resources I had in my previous site are simply not there and at the moment impossible to obtain. Anyway I will deal with that.
House great but still cannot find some basic equipment. I really need my utensils box… I so wish I was a snail but alas am not. Will fast tomorrow but will actually keep to set calories 1700 in order to set the tone for the week. A bonus of moving to the country is the stone fruit. A parent bought in the hugest box of peaches , nectarines and some apples. I will have to remind myself of the calories.
Am having a training session tomorrow so am hoping to improve on the fitness I gained in term four with my gym trainer…
Must go and do some work… Emel

    Morning/evening all,

It’s a nice sunny morning here and I’m considering a walk.
I am also making plans for the final push to goal which is a bit further away than I had hoped but it is what it is and I know I can do it. I intend to give up bread and added sugar for Lent. That will mean no granola so I’ll have porage instead, and I’m going to add some plant sterols and see if it affects my cholesterol levels.
I have never cared for tofu since being given some smoked and overcooked stir fried tofu with veggies many years ago. While I was in Cambodia I had some Pad Thai and found the tofu very tasty so I’m going to introduce it into my diet.

My holiday was fabulous. Cambodia is a very interesting country that is still struggling to recover from the effects of war, oppression and genocide. The people are so friendly and those working in the tourist industry are all kind, helpful and willing. The accomodation and the standard and variety of food were way above my expectations and there were many interesting places to go and fun things to do. It was also hotter than my trip notes indicated but zthat wasn’t a problem 😃
I discovered that I’m fitter than I thought despite the back and hip problems as I managed hundreds of stairs and steps, walked and walked and walked, jumped in and out of boats, swam in pools, the sea and under a waterfall, and spent a day cycling 27kms in 30°C plus heat.
We did an evening tour of Phnom Penh in a cyclo which is a bicycle rickshaw and it is like sitting in a pushcjair but you are on the road. The traffic is crazy but I felt perfectly safe and it was amazing to look at things from that level. We also used motorbike powered tuk-tuks and used boats of numerous shapes and sizes. Longer journeys were on a comfortable air conditioned bus.
Some of us did a Cambodian cookery class at a restaurant. For $10 we went to the market for ingredients, were taught how to cook a complete meal and then got to eat it, and were given a recipe book. The chef was called Toot, a bit of a control freak but endearingly bonkers! We had great fun and the food was excellent 😃

We visited palaces, temples, farms, cottage industries, village houses, saw some beautiful countryside, rivers and coastal areas including mangroves. We also visited the Killing Fields and Genocide Museum which was very distressing but an important reminder of what happened. We met many people who had been affected by what happened, our official guide didn’t meet his father until he was four years old as his parents were separated by the regime. Both of his parents lost several siblings and their parents. The resilence of the Cambodian people is outstanding. It is noticeable that there are very few elderly people alive in the country today as such a huge number of people were killed.
It was a fabulous trip and one of the best holidays I’ve had in recent years which is saying something as I’ve been to so many fascinating places.

I’ve also posted this on Tessy’s thread so you might want to give my post on there a miss……

I’ve come home feeling refreshed, restored and ready to tackle anything so am hoping the weight will start to come off at a steady rate. First fast tomorrow.

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Hi Amazon,

Good to have you back safe and sound. The trip does sound fantastic, and a very interesting country with a lot of history, ancient and modern.

The sun is NOT shining here. We have yet another day of heavy rain forecast. And tomorrow too 🙁

Thanks for the trip report Amazon. Fabulous!
All the best with reaching goal. You CAN do it, I know.😊 P

Well done on the move, surviving the new school, and coming back to us, Emel. You too can do it! Have faith in yourself. P 😊

Heavy rain forecast here this afternoon and it is clouding over.

A couple in our group had travelled from Burma and done the trip that I’m going on in October. After hearing what they had to say about it and my experiences in Cambodia I can hardly wait.

I didn’t even mention Angkor Wat in my previous post. We spent the last three nights of the trip in Siem Reap. We stayed in a very nice hotel in the middle of the city. We spent a day and a half at the temples which was very interesting with many more tourists there than we had seen on the rest of the trip, and had a free afternoon which I spent swimming in the beautiful pool at the hotel.

There are lots of initiatives around Cambodia that help the disadvantaged eg street children, the disabled, sex workers, orphans. We saw numerous examples of training schemes to give them a chance of a “normal” life. We visited a silk farm where they train and employ the disabled and unskilled women from poor backgrounds, they even have a nursery for 120 babies to five year olds so that women can leave their children somewhere safe while they earn a living.
There are a couple of organisations that help street children by giving them a home and training them as restaurant workers, waiting tables, cooking etc. There are several restaurants around the country doing this. We visited three, one in Phnom Penh where we had lunch, and for dinner in Battambang and Siem Reap. They cook classic SE Asian dishes with a modern twist and there are also dishes that contain unusual foods, such as deep fried tarantula, and stews and stir fries containing ants, silkworms and other creepy crawlies 😮
I didn’t eat any bugs but the food was excellent in all three, and it is all locally sourced, additive free etc. The profits go into helping more disadvantaged youngsters. The food and service were of a very high standard.

I bought a foodie souvenir home, a kilo of Kampot pepper. It is very famous in Cambodia. We visited an organic farm and after walking round looking at vines, learning about how the different types of pepper are produced and tasting it, I couldn’t resist buying some. I got 500g each of black and red and am looking forward to experimenting with it.
I may try making some chilli and pepper vodka which I had in a cocktail that also contained mango juice, lime juice and vanilla syrup. I could taste all of the individual flavours but it nearly blew my head off 😆

    Amazon,
Your trip sounds amazing, I will add it to my wish list. I had a Thai meal last night, murder choosing food that is not deep fried or has added coconut milk. Settled for steamed prawns with garlic and ginger and some noodles. I have eaten tofu many times, as you say it has to be cooked carefully, I prefer seafood in Thai dishes.

Emel, very well done on maintaining. If I come off 5:2 I gain weight immediately. It’s quite a depressing thought but one I have come to live with after two years of fasting. Glad you are enjoying the fruits of living in the country but don’t forget to count the cals. I have stopped eating fruit on fast days because I often forgot to record them.

Happy- the weather here last night was horrendous, high winds and rain from late afternoon into the wee small hours, kept me awake. Fortunately it was sunny and mild for my dog walk this morning. 5000 steps done already. More painting on the agenda this afternoon so not sure I will finish my steps today, we will see.

Barata and Wiwi- hope you had a good meet up? I hear that the weather in Welly has been very nice lately. My daughter will start her new job in February, she can’t wait and is revising her Montessori teaching and leaning Maori basic words. Her friends husband is heading off home for a month so her friend has asked her to stay until April. She is very lucky to have such good friends. She is going to get a part time evening job to supplement her income, possibly hospitality work.

Very, very envious of your good weather SH’s.

    Hi Jojo,

I’m thinking about eating tofu as it contains plant stanols.
I really enjoyed the variety of vegetables and herbs available in Cambodia many of which we don’t have here.
I ate a lot of fish and seafood. Kep is on the coast and famous for crab with Kampot pepper. We saw the pepper being grown, watched the crabs being landed and then ate the lunch!

I ate lots of prawns, shrimps and different types of fish and was fascinated by the food markets. I did tire of steamed rice which accompanies many dishes although I usually left most of it. I also managed to avoid bread most of the time. There is plenty of chicken, beef and pork which was all very good. There were many restaurants which also served Western food but I couldn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to eat Khmer food. A small group of us went out to dinner one night and chose a basic looking place that was full of locals and had an excellent meal with plenty of beer for $4.50 each. It was ridiculously cheap everywhere and I came home with more than 50% of the money I took with me.
The food and what I learned at the cookery class has given me lots of ideas for quick, tasty and healthy meals.
I’ve not weighed myself but my clothes are no tighter so if I’ve gained it’s only a couple of pounds. I am very happy that I didn’t over indulge. I thought it might be difficult but I found it fairly easy to resist although I did eat two slices of my birthday cake. On a couple of occasion we were offered things to try such as palm sugar sweets which is very similar to Scottish tablet and I said no thanks. I also said no to BBQ rat 😮

We had a great evening with Wiwi and her OH last night, and the fabulous weather keeps going on and on. There’s no rain in the forecast for at least a week, so I will need to get the hose out again. And no wind !! – not the Wellington I know at all.

It’s a public holiday here today, so we have moved our FD to tomorrow. So much easier to fast at work, with distractions.

I’m sure bbq rat would be very tasty if you didn’t know what it was, Amazon, but I don’t blame you for passing on that! Where the locals go is often the best place to eat, cheap and yummy.

It’s great that your daughter has got a job here, Jojo, and that the concern about her employment, and being able to stay, is behind her. We will be seeing you here again 🙂

    Hi Everyone,
Welcome back Amazon and happy birthday. So interesting to hear about your travels, especially the food and cultural parts and I hope you share some of your new cooking skills with us.

Jojo, wonderful to hear good news about your daughter. I am happy most of the time, but always happiest when our son (and daughter in law) are happy and settled in their jobs/lives.

Oh Penti, well done and congratulations!! Keep it up. Weigh your clothing sometime, so you can subtract!

RT sorry about Mrs. RT, hope things improve. You continue to inspire all of us.

Barata, I am trying to be with you on bread. I do love bread, but have not eaten it very often in the past month. I will be making cornbread today for a special meal, but I have figured it into my TDEE.

Days are so busy but managing to read this forum as thoroughly as possible since it’s my lifeline to 5:2.

Third week done, only another half pound gone, but happy to be down 4.5 pounds since I started.

My steps could improve. Busy around the house, but those steps don’t show up on my pedometer and take little effort. Taking my second walk of the day in a few minutes (outside, since our temp is an amazing 41 degrees F!!) and that should push me well over 10,000 for the day.

Today is Super Bowl Sunday in the US, almost a national holiday, and it is a huge day for eating. My OH and I will watch the game, and have homemade chili and cornbread. Although he is not in weight loss mode, we decided together that we would have no chips, dips, wings, etc. I appreciate his support.

Tomorrow is a fast day and a very active day as well (teach three classes, work out on elliptical), and I’m hoping for success. I have about a stone and three pounds to lose between now and our beach vacation in April, exactly 2 months away. I may not reach that exact goal, but I will be happy to take any loss between now and then. Excited every time I see a new (lower) number on the scale :).

Thanks to everyone for the inspiration and support. Good luck tomorrow fasters and non-fasters alike.

Hi team and thanks for the care and concern for Mrs RT I really do appreciate it. When you have emotional attachment to a project or for anything really as I do it’s difficult to choose the correct words without shooting yourself in the foot so I have just used the Beatles and ‘Let It be” for the time being well it is Monday again and time to get our fast on it is this intermittent fasting our WOL and

“Our objective on a fast day is to achieve as long a fasting window as possible”
    Peace RT

Good to catch up with this thread, always plenty going on!
Hope you are feeling better Jo?
Amazon, my daughter visited Cambodia last year and loved it. As you say plenty to see and do, she stayed B&B in people’s home in some places and the people were so friendly and helpful, I would like to go myself sometime. I’m glad you enjoyed the trip.
Rotten week for me, went downhill from my birthday on Monday, eating too much and the wrong stuff. Kept away from the scales as jeans felt a bit tight. However exercise levels are up and I’m ready to get back on track and I’m not going to lose sight of my Feb goal of losing 5 pounds …..eeek.
Have a good week everyone, it is most certainly easier not to eat than to stop once you start.

Evening all, should say good morning as it is past Midnight, awake listening to a shocking storm, things crashing around outside, got it for a few more days of it too. Wee- I hear that you have the good weather in Scotland, can it be true? for a change.
Barata- My daughter is very happy, settling nicely, dragon boating this weekend, mad girl. Glad you had a good BBQ with WiWi. I won’t be returning for at least 2 years unless something spectacular happens, marriage, pregnancy? Unlikely though. Saving my pennies for the next trip, meanwhile it’s Britain and Europe. My American trip is on hold because my travel companion is poorly.

Amazon- you turned down roast rat? How many calories? Is it white meat or red? I hear guinea pig is delicious. Glad to be a vegetarian( Pescatarian)

I have had an excellent day foodwise and am feeling more positive. I have cut out bread today and already feel less bloated. Late breakfast of porrige and water and early dinner of salmon, baby corn, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans(I know these are not on the gallbladder list) but seriously finding it hard at the moment. Note- no potato. Also had an apple and two tangerines. Not bad for a non fast day.

Ok – so who knows about Cider apple Vinegar- I am hearing that it is the new wonder food, increasing metabolism and anti inflam, plus used to improve acne.I may go order a vat of it tomorrow.

My stomach pain is still around but I am managing without pain relief now so improving. Hubby’s birthday tomorrow but he won’t be getting cake here, he has one at work though. I bought him theatre tickets and dinner but not until next month as we are too busy at the moment.

Fasting tomorrow 350 cals – give me strength!
