  • When I did my big trip to Australia, I spent five weeks with friends in Perth and I gained 10lbs. It wasn’t the food but the alcohol that did for me as on the days that my friends were at work I didn’t eat all day or just had a slice of toast or some fruit. The following three weeks when travelling on the Indian Pacific and in Adelaide I didn’t gain an ounce and still ate out, had wine, G&Ts, celebrated my birthday etc. I did keep up the exercise which helped.

The thought of losing weight while you are away is not worth the effort, think maintenance. The priority is enjoying yourself and making the trip worth the huge effort you’ve put into planning it.

I have such a huge list of places I want to visit and travelling grows the list rather than shrinking it!

jojo I never get fed up reading about it pal . Have a brilliant time . You have been looking forward to this so much . Remember too that this is not a diet it is AWOL and can be tweaked . Have a fabulous time pal xx

    To all my fasting friends,
I agree with Amazon enjoy yourself Jojo. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. This fasting works. I am now back at goal weight. I am going to make it through the weekend. With out going on a bender.

Well done Sarah!! Good to back on track isn’t it? I have just been on a peanut butter bender, but it was lunch on a non fast day, celebrating best ever weight this morning!

Everybody happy awesome work sarah don’t knock the bender till you try it πŸ˜† and Nama yet another PB and just like yet another hawks flag

    Bugger It πŸ˜₯

    Morning/evening all,

    Well done Nama,
I’m still not back to my lowest ever but am finally making progress which means reaching goal by the end of November is possible. I am going to work really hard on keeping below my goal weight TDEE for the next week and if it means counting every calorie then I’m prepared to do it.

    Sarah, you can do it!

I’m up early watching tennis and trying to decide if I want to watch the rugby this evening ?

Have a good one everybody ?

Thanks all for your praise, but I don’t really feel I deserve it as my progress is painfully slow (.5kg this whole month so far!). Or maybe I do deserve it because I am still trying! But I don’t really have a set weight goal or time goal, I am just doing a SAMM and ‘keeping on’ – as long as I can maintain I am happy, and any extra loss is a bonus. I fast M/W/F most weeks and pretty well relax at weekends. Too lazy to count calories like you Amazon. I guess another reason I am not desperate to reach ‘maintainence’ is because I am a bit scared it will be harder to actually maintain than lose.
Sad day for the Eagles RT, the one thing I hate about sport is that there has to be a loser. At least my son’s fiance is happy, she was feeling guilty about buying a ticket to the GF ($350) when they have a mortgage now! Enjoy your sport watching Amazon!

    Nama,

I hate counting calories but I gave myself a talking to as there is no point in doing ADF and overeating on alternate days. After three days of rest my back has settled down and I’m feeling much happier today which makes a huge difference.

Getting on the scales and seeing a sustained loss has also given me a boost. Fingers crossed that it continues.

Great news! I am sure it will continue if you have the discipline to count calories! Terrific that your back is much better, take care x

    Hi guys,
Sorry but too busy today to post, chat tomorrow.
Sensible eating today, salmon salad for lunch, prawn omelette for dinner.

    Well done Wallabies!!! ??

Good Morning. Well a sleep in as last night had to pick up younger son and a friend at twelve thirty down the hill ( this is for the hills people!) approx ten kilometres down the south eastern highway to the entrance of Adelaide proper. I had had a huge day with My cousin in riverton so had been travelling all over the countryside. 15000 steps on my Fitbit which included a seventy five minute walk .
I joined the gym Nicky, and have loved it. I am doing the thirty day trial, will have to get going before they close this am . I am just doing a twenty minute bike or step ride and then twenty five mins using the weights. I had to pursue it as they were not going to contact me but the two other younger girls were great, not so much the older woman… I have to ignore that I look like a biggest loser contestant , a bit hard when you are with a small group of young men in their twenties but I know they are just doing their work as I am….. The reason I took so long to join such a convenient gym.. I was a member of Healty Inspirations for years but it was 25 km away and I just could not get there consistently.
Oh as I was trudging up a hill yesterday I thought my new mantra should be persistence, resistance and consistence as I exercise! Well up and out day light saving this weekend so here is to some gardening in the evenings
Fasting on Tuesday and trying to record calories as that is my downfall on non FD

    Morning/evening all

Hi emel, well done on getting started at the gym. I try hard to concentrate on what I’m doing and my own goals and not concern myself with what anyone else does or looks like. Having said that as I don’t work I go during the day Mon-Fri so it is mostly older people and the members of the aqua fit class make me feel like a catwalk model πŸ˜‰
I joined in January having never been to a gym before and it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I always enjoy it and never see it as a chore, and I always feel so pleased with myself when I’ve finished. I’ve not been since last Monday as my back has been very sore and I really miss it and can’t wait to go tomorrow.

Another sunny morning here, but we are due some rainy weather starting tomorrow. I think this is our last Indian summers day ?

I’m having the same problen on non FDs and have also gone back to calorie counting. FD tomorrow which is easier. Maybe I should fast every day………

Have a good one everybody ?

    Good morning Emel,
Great decision about the gym, I really miss going since I let my membership lapse in July. I have been too busy with the house and garden plus decluttering since then. I used to love the classes and pool but I did some independent workouts too plus Yoga. You will be trying Lawn Bowls next, ha ha. I would so love you all( even Weemam) to at least give it a try. Remember there are 90 year olds in this sport and they are all a lot of fun.

Yesterday I spent the whole day in Canterbury, shopping with two female friends. We stopped for lunch in Marks and Spencers and Tiny Tim’s Tea Shop. I needed to buy two item of comfy clothing to pack today, I am now set. One more night in my bed before I head off to Wellington.

I will be going out to lunch with my daughter and ex today. Now for a lovely sunny walk along the coast with my dogs.

Happy days friends, enjoy every minute of them.

    Jojo,
Have wonderful trip and keep us posted once in a while with what you are up to. It is always fun to hear from others who are traveling, when many of us are living our regular day to day.I met some wonderful people when I travelled to NZ and Aussie. I would love to go back someday.

    Hello Alia_alg
I did average 8 lb loss per month when I was fasting (500 cal max)3 days per week and eating 1200 calories on other days. I am mostly vegetarian and don’t eat sugar or bread, basically eggs, fish, salad. Hot veg, cheese, potato and lots of home made soup and porridge made with water( one teaspoon of honey).
    Good luck!
    Sig
I plan to post whilst travelling if I am not too exhausted from sight seeing events.

    Jo,

I can’t believe we’re finally saying au revoir!

Travel safely. Enjoy yourself. Eat mindfully.

I look forward to the travelogue.

Hi Weemam yes the MIL is doing well will be discharged tomorrow it’s a public holiday here so she would have been out today but is remaining calm and perhaps has a better understanding of some of the boundaries. A nice blast of summer here yesterday topped out at 35 deg and Nama you should get that today. Day 2 of a 4 day reset and a 6k walk before work I find if I have a litre of water after it that sets the day up to be doable ok have great day everyone.

We had the heatwave here yesterday too RT. Highest early October temperature since 1943! And again today. It will be a bad bushfire season. At least it makes fasting easy. πŸ™‚ P

I’m really pleased I stuck to my guns at the weekend – on the train for 12 hours altogether sat/sun and joined in celebrations for 50 years (!!!) since commencing Physiotherapy training. It was great seeing so many ‘oldies’ like me who were immediately recognisable in spite of the passing of time!!
It was great too feeling more confident physically, knowing that I no longer looked so badly overweight and could ‘walk tall’!!
When I was travelling I just had a bottle of water with me and I kept myself occupied making notes on the 5:2 diet recipes. I could then enjoy the hotel meal feeling totally relaxed about what I had and had worked out that I could drink a glass of wine and a tomato juice. I tasted about a third of the dessert – enough to enjoy it – and finished off with a nice coffee
Buffet breakfast next morning was great! Lots of fresh melon, berries etc with yoghurt and I then ordered 3 poached eggs with a grilled tomato and brown toast
Then water, an ‘innocent’ raspberry and apple drink and 2 apples to eat while travelling
After being collected from station by hubby I found a lovely ‘blt’ sandwich pack which effectively filled all the empty corners!
FD yesterday went fine with stuff kept in the freezer ‘for rainy days’ (and it was one of those!) and found I’d achieved my usual FD weight loss of approx one pound – whoopee!!!

It’s been a mad / crazy week, with my elderly aunt taking a fall and breaking her arm on Friday, and working to get care for her. She refused to stay in hospital, and hospital wouldn’t let her out without someone with her, so I stayed the night, have been back every day since, but we seem to have things organised now. She’s a wonderful 91-year-old, so fit and healthy she takes no medication, glorious bruise on the arm but otherwise no after-effects of the fall.

Regret your arrival in Wellington will be into gales, Jojo. Little I can do about it, I’m afraid. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday. πŸ™‚ Travel safely.

    Evening all,

We have also had the heat in Melbourne RT & Purple, 2 days of 35, not nice but a cool change tonight and cardigan back on! Watering the garden yesterday as its been a dry month and no rain in sight..

Well done pen nib, you do have it licked by the sound of it. How lovely to meet up with old colleagues, especially when you feel so good about yourself. 5:2 is brilliant because we can still be ‘normal’ and enjoy socialising and can always compensate with fasting.

Sorry to read about your aunt Barata, she does sound wonderful. Lucky to have you too! Maybe we will all still be posting on here when we are 91, solving the worlds problems…..

Busy week with son’s wedding on Friday, so far so good. Only drama was this evening when we discovered the gear hired for the boys (all included!) did not include cuff links! My two sons looked at the cuffs of the shirts, with no idea what was required, never seen a cuff link in their lives – obviously not educated properly! Luckily dad saved the day and brought out his 40 yr old collection – thinks of himself as a bit of a 007!

I managed a fast today, being busy certainly helps. Kids all stayed for dinner so I planned to have some fresh salmon, everyones favourite and ‘fast friendly’ too. Haven’t managed a swim this week and really missing it, but booked in for a massage on Monday and plan to have a swim beforehand. Lovely thought…

    Evening/morning all,

Another FD almost over. I went grocery shopping this morning before I got hungry and then watched tennis for a couple of hours before meeting a friend this afternoon. We had a coffee before going to the cinema. I managed to ignore the cakes, muffins and sandwiches on sale in the coffee shop. I was feeling hungry until I sat down in the cinema and my nostrils were assailed with the sickly sweet smell of popcorn which I’ve never liked :yuck:

The film was good, we saw A Walk In The Woods which is based on a Bill Bryson book and it was very entertaining.

Talking of 007 I am looking forward to the new Bond film ?

Have a good one everybody ?

RT at least mine can do up their own ties!!
Another 007 story Amazon – when we were in London years ago, a cinema was having a James Bond festival and showing double features every night of two Bond movies. As husband loves them and I enjoy them, we went two nights in a row. They all sort of merged into each other at one stage!!
He has seen Walk in the Woods with a mate and they loved it, I wasn’t invited! I believe it was really good.
Well done avoiding the pre movie food, an achievement when out socializing.
I am avoiding getting out of bed at 8.15am!!

    Good morning all.

Amazon, glad to hear you enjoyed ‘A Walk in the Woods’ – OH and I are planning to see it.

Purple, Nama and RT – spring weather is supposed to be changeable but this is ridiculous! Monday shorts and t-shirt at home for the public holiday, with an ‘extreme’ fire danger rating, then summer weight trousers and light cotton shirt yesterday for work and today back with heavier trousers, singlet and woollen top, plus 9C at 7am so needed jacket for walk from car to office. Office was very stuffy but recent exterior painting meant the windows are stuck shut πŸ™ set the aircon to fan only to at least change the air. Also completed job card to free up windows. πŸ˜‰

Have abandoned fasting for now, just focussing on eating within my target TDEE day-by-day by making sensible choices and keeping up my usual activity levels. Encouraging to see the scales down 0.4kg since last week’s Wednesday morning weigh-in despite recent fasting attempt ‘epic fails’ (to quote Amazon).

Happy hump day everyone and take care. n xxx

Happy hump day Nicky (and all the other working fts) πŸ™‚
It’s certainly crazy weather…2 days of absolute scorchers, wearing wet swimners all day, then the southerly hit about 2am and out came my ‘UK summer’ clothes! (Read as sleeved teeshirt and toed shoes πŸ˜‰
Minimal eating all week (including 2 fasts) to cover myself mid celebration weekends. Cheers all, P

Good evening from Windy Wellington. I am on the 6 th floor and I can sure hear the wind swirling around. The journey went very smoothly. I watched two films, read a whole book and watched series 4 of Game of Thrones. I did my in flight exercises every hour I was awake, much to the amusement of other passengers. Not too much room in my Isle seat as quite close to the toilets which occasionally meant the queue was next to me. Food was excellent and always served first because we ordered vegetarian.

Am I imagining it or is everyone ‘tall’ here, so many women and men of 6 ft plus, I felt quite short. Free Wifi in the apartments so all good.

I need to get to the shops tonight though as the milk they left with the tea bags is gross. I will get some porridge too. Cute little kitchenette so we are sorted for evening meals. We will probably have lunch out every day as we will be touristicating.

Feel remarkably good and should sleep well tonight although I am not used to city life and sirens going off.
Fasting tomorrow to make up for eating three meals per day over the last two days.

    Hi Jojo,
That seemed to go very quickly, probably not for you, though it sounds like you survived it well. Its such a big flight. Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere, the land of giants!! I hope you do sleep well tonight, I find it takes me a few nights in a strange bed. Enjoy your sightseeing.

Nicky if you are having a break from fasting (sort of a holiday?) I am sure you will maintain at your present weight and hopefully restart with new energy. It is disheartening when we fail at anything, but remember how far you have come. I dont think a few weeks of failed fasts (even epic ones) constitutes failure anyway.
In any case, please keep posting, we still want to hear from you!!

Hi Jo, welcome to the southern hemisphere. Not sure about kiwis but we Aussies can be tall but some like me were average but getting shorter with age. πŸ˜‰ Your apartment with kitchenette sounds ideal – I love Wellington, so picturesque.

Nama, thanks for encouraging words. I’ll certainly keep posting because it’s like joining a group of friends every time I log in. I definitely don’t intend to give up the IF WOL forever because of all the other benefits.

I’m still maintaining an eating window of 4.5 hours Monday-Wednesday so keeping up the practice, even if planned FDs unravel when I get home from work. I’ve just decided to stop beating myself up over it but for a time, can’t cope with the thought of the grinding hunger pangs between getting home from work and dinner time. I’m not falling off the wagon completely, just need a break.

Hi Nicky my SA fast friend I can think of no better or truer comment except to keep on keeping on and as Nama quite rightly points out do not for a second forget or under value how far you have come β€œepic fail” what a grand phrase that is and like I keep reminding my own boys we learn much more from failure than we do success so park yourself in the parking bay of this fast life sit back and smell the roses and enjoy this wonderful blue sky and sunshine that we have here in SA today and with school and I would suspect Tafe on holidays here is a little something to chuckle at Enjoy.

G’day Jo. Welcome to Australasia ? Good luck with sorting your time clock. Just go with your body’s flow.

Nicky, I was thinking today there are 2 things I’ve learnt from this 5:2 journey…
We need hugely less food as older folk to maintain our bodies, no matter how active we think we are
    and
    I won’t starve if I don’t eat for 24 hours.

These two bits of knowledge would never have occurred to me without IF.

Might I suggest you throw away the meal rule book (breakfast, lunch, dinner/tea/supper -whatever label you use) and eat when your body wants/ really needs to. Delay every eating episode for at least an hour after you think you want to eat, then eat from a selection of healthy options. Happy Now convinced me to have breakfast (my favourite meal) any time of the day. I quickly took up eating breakfast in the middle of the day, effectively cutting out a meal. If, like me, you are hungry at 4 or 5pm, then eat dinner then. Stops the nibbles.

Meal times are a social construct, unrelated to our individual nutritional needs.

Keep healthy and happy mate. P ?

Welcome to Wellington, Jojo. There were lots of sirens today as there was a bomb threat at the university, and one of the buildings was evacuated. No bomb, of course. That’s three of the country’s universities targeted today. πŸ™ So it’s not usually so noisy.

    Morning/evening all,

    Hi Nicky,
Sorry to hear you are struggling. A break is a good idea.
Sound advice from Purple regarding eating healthy food when your body tells you it needs it, and I was going to suggest eating dinner early on FDs if you can’t wait rather than the FD not working. If you don’t want to do that, maybe you could find something to do, have a hot drink then go for a walk, have a swim on the way home, or rethink FDs so you can have a small snack as soon as you get in the door accompanied by a hot drink. You’ll find a way and you are right in not beating yourself up over it.

My FDs are fine, it’s the other days that are the problem, but I’m working on it and I know I’ll get there eventually.

We all talk about getting into the habit, fasting being second nature, and how good we feel after a successful FD, but we rarely acknowledge that doing it week in week out is bloody hard work and requires a huge amount of determination and mental toughness that we don’t always have the energy for. We need a break from it now and then and accepting that is difficult because we look at it as a failure rather than our bodies and minds telling us we need a rest.

    You’ll get there ?

Have a good one everybody ?

    Barata,
That explains that then, thank goodness. I have noticed sirens when I stay in cities. I really do live in a very quiet location by the sea so can’t adapt easily. However I am recording this whistling wind sound from the window so the reception can organise someone to fix the noise for us. Sure it’s not a problem when it isn’t windy but the city is known for wind.

Having an early night tonight, I am already in bed and I will read for a bit. I have taken 2 muscle relaxants as my hip pain is back with a vengeance from too long sitting in planes. Should help me sleep tonight too. My daughter has gone out with her friends, she managed more ‘in flight’ sleep. But we both feel pretty good considering we left Monday and arrived Wednesday but of course we stopped twice and there are time differences.

It’s great to have started the trip, so far, so good.

Have a good night’s sleep, Jojo, and then we can make contact tomorrow.

When we first moved here I didn’t know what had struck, with the wind. Never experienced anything like it – a lovely summer day and I couldn’t put the washing on the line!! When we moved back I insisted on a home that was sheltered from the north and west, so at least the worst of that wind goes over the top of us. We get the southerlies, but you expect winds in winter. At least it’s going to improve over the next few days πŸ™‚

    Good morning All,
Excellent nights sleep, comfy bed, not too noisy neighbours, the trumpet practise didn’t last long thank goodness and I ignored the whisli g windows. I have woken to heavy rain and high winds, I am not concerned as living on the UK SE coast this weather is making me feel quite ‘at home’.

Stopped at an expensive but convenient late night shop on my way home last evening so I can have a nice cuppa now, all is good with the world. Just bought Cambells soup and crackers, no tempting rubbish snacks.

Dining at an Oesteria(family diner) tonight and dining at another another meditteranean Oesteria during our visit as my daughters friends work at these establishments and it’s our only chance to meet up with them, they do long shifts.

Due to the weather ( gales) we will visit the Te Papa Tongarewa Museaum of New Zealand. Apparently we can experience Earthquake House and a giant squid there and see some historical and contemporary art – perfect.

I think I will fast until dinner tonight, not hungry at all yet, sustain myself with tea and water.

    Hi Jojo,
Great to hear your holiday is off to such a good start…enjoy your sightseeing today!

RT you are so funny! Yes indeed, the preening is about to start in full mode, not sure about detailing though, makes me feel like an FJ Holden! There is now a 50% chance of rain forecast which would be a shame (when you think we haven’t had any for a month!). The wedding is at Williamstown overlooking the water, with lovely views to the city beyond, so blue skies would be prettier – but thats something we cant control so no point stressing about it! Fasting today as tomorrow will be lots of eating, even before the wedding begins I think!

Have a lovely day all, keep the faith! 5:2 is the only way to go – good health and good eating!!

Relax and enjoy the wedding Nama. You’ll make a stunning mother of the groom! ? P

    Hi everyone.

RT, great exam answers. Reminds me of how careful one needs to be when setting quizzes. Well done on the 4-day fast – you are an inspiration! Yes, teaching starts again next week but this time subjects I’ve done before so only need to roll out old stuff with a bit of a tweak – can’t ever leave things alone. If I were an artist, I’d still be touching the painting up after it’s been hung on the gallery wall.

Nama, revel in your ‘mother of the groom’ role – looking forward to hearing how everything goes.

Jo and Barata, can imagine you meeting for a chinwag.

Thanks so much Amazon (yet again needed!) for encouraging words and sound advice. Funnily enough, now I’m at Thursday, am feeling calm about next week’s usual FDs and while daydreaming in the shower this morning, the long forgotten clichΓ© about ‘failing to plan means planning to fail’ popped into my head. Definitely been part of the problem so, while writing the week’s menu and shopping list (usually dinners only planned) I worked out what I would eat each work day next week as well.

Also Purple, thanks for good suggestions about eating only when hungry and the earlier dinnertime. You’re absolutely right about mealtimes being a social convention. We have for years had dinner at 7pm but with OH working from home now there is no need to wait that long so will try an hour earlier, since the latest I get home is 5pm now. As I’ve said before, I don’t have trouble at work, but all the snack things OH keeps in the house are my undoing when my resolve is weakened.

Very hard workout at the gym last night but cracked a new PB with overhead press and free weights of 15kg in each hand for 10 reps – more than I have ever lifted before. Our gym has two types of hand weights – shiny silvery ones up to 10kg and then black heavier ones that my daughter and I used to jokingly call the boys’ weights. I have been using them now for some years and yesterday, caught a glimpse of another lady’s amazed expression as she watched me with the 15kgs – and she was considerably younger than me! Felt very smug (wish I had Amazon’s skill with the emoticons at this point).

Take care all and keep on keeping on. n xxx

    Good plan Nicky!
I’m having a dinner party tomorrow night and I’ve just finished writing the “lesson plan” (once a teacher, always a teacher) right down to times for preparing everything. Sad, I know ? P

Not sad at all Purple, just well organized!

I do it too, even setting the table the night before if possible and sorting out the serving plates and the prep. schedule.

Of course it will all go to plan and with a relaxed calm hostess, everyone will enjoy themselves.

    Morning/evening all

We have a lovely sunny but chilly morning here with a nip of frost in the air. Winter is on the way!

Nicky, I am always in awe of the women who use the free weights as I have trouble with the 2kg size although most of them are young enough to be my daughter. Having said that, when I use the resistance machines I can shift much heavier than that so I’m no wimp!
If you’ll pardon the pun, a new PB in the gym may be the lift you need to get you back into full fasting mode Smiley

Could OH not have his own shelf or preferably cupboard where he could stash all his snacks or would that not make any difference?

Purple, I always write a menu plan and a schedule for food prep if I’m having a dinner party and I’ve done it since my my first one resulted in rice that had turned to mush and undercooked veggies plus a very harassed hostess whose mascara melted and her eyelashes got stuck together as she rushed to get something out of the oven before it burned Smiley

Have a good one everybody ?
