  • All your posts about the why’s & the how’s resonate deeply with me. To be honest, I got tears in my eyes reading some of them.

I started gaining weight as a child, probably at 7 or 8. I continued to grow and finally when I was 12 or so, I starved off some weight. My Mother always had a weight problem and I remember her eating a bowl of lettuce while the rest of us ate dinner. She was up and down the scale as long as I can remember. Anyway, she tried to help me and we had a calorie counter book that was our bible. I remember writing down what I ate and saying to Mother “I only had 500 calories today, do you think I’ll lose?” How sad……that was day after day of less than 1000 calories. I don’t think that lasted too long before I gained back a substantial amount and got up to 200 lbs again. Between ages 16 & 17, I starved the weight off again. I remember be proud to be able to say that I hadn’t eaten anything in 3 days. Sigh……. I kept the 60 lbs off and was quite thin from 17 until my late 30’s. Not that it wasn’t a struggle. Lots of exercise and VERY low calories most days.

Early menopause and being happily married, I let my weight get back up to over 200 lbs. Luckily, I’m tall 5’8″ so the pounds are spread over a large area! LOL! I’d go down 10 or so and then right back up. My high in January of 2013 was 221. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months of a “boot camp challenge” and have maintained that loss since. I’m going to lose the last 40 and get down to my fighting weight. πŸ˜‰ I’m so thankful to have found IF. The last 40 may come off slowly, but this will be the last time I lose it! I’m hoping 6:1 will be enough to allow me to maintain.

Reading the maintainers stories is so inspirational. For those of us still on our way down the scale…….one day we will be among the maintainers!

I’ve kept busy today, and it has made my FD fly by. I am looking forward to my veggie and lentil curry this evening.

Hi FastFastSlow I really enjoyed reading your piece thankyou with your experience and assessment on the 5-2 WOL I personally found your nb very timely given I have reassessed my goal twice since beginning my own journey as the unrealistic became more realistic and the doable doable with the ultimate goal now strangely enough my weight when I was married and that will be me done.. then into and onto the β€˜maintenance chatbox’ sharing is caring so bring your friends FFS.

At first glance lori I would say find simcoeluv on this site and ask every question you want . Most likely will get a scientific answer. We’ll support you there after.

    Good evening all,
Lost my game of bowls but for once it wasn’t my fault. My partner today was really off her usual form. Never mind we enjoyed it. Playing again tomorrow morning, better luck next time.

The thread is very interesting today. Thank you all contributors.

I am off for a Christmas meal tonight, I will do my best to be reasonable in my choices, no alcohol and no pudding me thinks.

    Speak to you all tomorrow.

Lichtie – (this post should probably be on the maintenance thread, but since you’re here….) – how can we help you / each other not to do it all a third time this Christmas?
I’m going to go back to the maintenance thread now – can’t keep up with two, being a Bear of Little Brain. Can you answer that there, if we can help?

HiSamm, yes i have a fitbit since april, i try and get 10,000 steps in per day, will be getting back to 15,000 in new year, was checking out exercise ball after reading your post..Could be fun too!!

Morning gang. OH flicked me an article about how fat leaves the body through oxidation. ..leaves mostly as CO2. Therefore, being active means you breathe more rapidly, removing more fat through breathing. Interesting! (From Live Science: Bahar Gholipour, Exhaled Pounds: How Fat Leaves Your Body)

Btw, OH reckons the increase to greenhouse gasses created by losing the fat is nothing compared to the amount produced by all that eating initially. πŸ˜‰
Minimal fast today as Christmas is taking over. Will hold back this morning and tomorrow. Cheers P

Morning all .. welcome to all who’ve just joined us (including those from maintenance πŸ˜† ).

FD today for me … that’s 2 FD and 2 semi-FD this week.

Interesting reading from those on Maintenance, PVE love the thoughts re fat leaving the body πŸ™‚

Hope to catch up more today … oh, yes, passed OFA training (instructor was really impressed as I got over 99% correct in all theory tests and aced the practical & scenarios too). During the afternoon yesterday during training (we were doing it in the first aid room of all places) we had someone come in needing assistance so I got to practice on a ‘real’ casualty, lol – and again did all the right things unfortunately no brownie points for that though πŸ˜€

Onward and downwards one and all πŸ˜€ catch up later πŸ˜€

    Well done AO
Everyone should do a regular First Aid course, shouldn’t they? Keeps us up to date and reinforces.
As a teacher, I did a course every year. It came in very handy when my OH collapsed in a public park. I wasn’t with him, but arrived a couple of minutes later and was able to calmly take charge of the situation. No one else in the gathering crowd knew what to do.
When I have mishaps I hear myself instantly recalling the 1st Aid mnemonics eg “pressure, elevation, rest”. It becomes intuitive. P

    Hi Lori

I endorse what Samm says. Simcoeluv answers many questions. A simple way to find him is to go to Forum at the top of this page and search on Recent.

Then there are wonderful people on this thread who can provide support and practical hints.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Thanks everyone! I have read many of sims posts……they are awesome. I think I’m pretty well established in my fasting days. The last couple have been quite easy. Just getting a handle on my eating days, which are going well this week.

    Hi Lichtle

My heart goes out to you. The message from all of us Maintainers is the same. This is our new normal. We need to fast each week to reset our system, and twice a week seems to be the magic number to prevent weight gain.

My OH who is the naturally slim one in our family, is now choosing two meals a day plus a tiny snack, where he used to have three meals. I think we can all learn from our naturally slim friends who have always listened to their own bodies.

Our dog is a Border Collie cross with Kelpie (an Australian cattle dog) and she has always moderated her eating to accord with the amount of exercise she is getting. How clever is she! Visitors cannot believe she is leaving half her food in the bowl for later. πŸ˜†

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Lori thats been a topic of discussionon this thread quite often. Im always wanting to do what I can to make my feed days improved.

once I felt comfortable with fasting and moved to 4:3 .
Feed days need to. Be both nutrious but also satiatingenough to keep a keep on keepin on attitude.

As I get closer to goal im trying to experiment with what my maintenance menu will be. So I wont have to reinvent the wheel again when i get to goal and then risk failing.

I have over the last 21 months moved to other foods.
the biggest reason is because I usually order my foods online. While its quick easy and virtually no temptations. Not saying buffets and bugers dont happen. Just that I believe that chance favors those that are prepared. Evertime I go to the grocery. I come out with stuff thats never on my lists.

what found optimistically challengening was to start taking 1 feed day a week and find what I can make as a health food day. Eventually that one health food feed day turned into all health food feed days. Not at first but as I kept trying the health foods . I started finding favorites month by month. Like salmon with broccoli and carrots. I like it so much now I look foward to it

    Good evening all,
Back from my dinner out, delicious and not too carbilicious. Chose salad with Brie and mango for starter, then catch of the day, which was poached cod with spinach and dauphinoise potato, very filling. No pud, just a final cuppa.

We had a quiz which was fun. I think I will make one up for posters who care to take part. Obviously I will ensure it has an international flavour, it will be my Christmas Day post. It will be more fun than academic. We should celebrate reaching 5000 posts somehow. The winner of course will have to accept a cyber gift, perhaps a hyphen for their ‘handle’. suggestions? Lady or Lord?, Duke or Duchess? The Honourable?

Another meal out tomorrow night and Friday night so semi fast both days, just soup at lunchtime. I love socialising but am really worried about my weigh in on Saturday.

How is everyone else getting on in the run up to Christmas?

    Jojo xx

Hi all. Hope everyone had a good day. I have just caught up on last two days posts (school concerts this week so working late) congrats nanny Liz what a wonderful Christmas present – a grandson. Reading everyone’s successful stories, and resons for making amazing life changes really inspire me. The more I read the more I lose. The more I lose the more I want to lose, the easier fast days become, the easier fast days become, the less I eat on feed days. I now never eat until lunchtime anyway. I shared this way of life with a friend at work who has joined me and has lost 9lb in 5 weeks. I ran up three flights of stairs today and was quite shocked to find I wasn’t keeled over and panting. Each week I have been weighing out bags of flour to correspond with that weeks weight loss already that bag feels quite heavy. I can’t believe I have been carrying that around not realising my poor joints and heart!
Thank you all for advice, understanding, and humour!! πŸ™‚

    Hi all,

Magnificent day here in Melbourne, we have had Californian weather this week!

Bay I am with you re 4:3, it’s hard! 3rd fast for this week today and I want my breakfast! Never mind, it’s just for Xmas and it makes 5:2 seem like a breeze. Your dog sounds beautiful, the mix of Border Collie and Kelpie would make her extremely clever, (and handsome) but I have never seen a dog leave food in their bowl before!

Purple we watched Catalyst last night and saw the article re CO2, there was a research paper just published by the Catalyst presenter Reuben contributing. (There is a post with excerpts on this forum in the last 24hrs) It actually debunked the global warming theory pointing out that the CO2 we fatties release in our exhaled breath was previously in food that had been consumed. Also said exercise didn’t help speed it up!

Never mind that, I have just been picturing the 43 x 250g blocks of butter lined up that I have lost so far with 5:2, now THAT is sweet. Hopefully just another 40 or so to go before the real challenge of maintaining.

    Cheers!

Jojo I think a quiz would be a lot of fun! Great idea. Very clever if you can figure out how to do it on line?

    Pve
    Agree with first aid training.

when I was 30 was in a public park facility where there was a weight room . A very strong man in his 40s collapsed and the staff were confused and disorganized. By the time paramedics came he was gone. Again something similair happened at the lake.where if I had been trained I could of stepped up.

so I took the first aid and cpr classes and keep the card current. Havent had to apply cpr thankfully. But have responded to car accidents that I happened upon. Seems with internet access so handy it should be something many people should learn.

Perhaps a new approach could be made as an mobile phone app that calls for 911 and then help connect a responder to medical response crews providing gps and speaker phone assistance. As well as sending pictures of wounds. Possibly metronomes to pace and beeps to keep timing. Possibly maps of where nearesr aeds are located. I dont think it would be too difficult .maybe has already been developed.

I think the 4-3 for me is the optimum weight loss (it is not an easy essay though) and most definitely 5-2 for maintenance and a life time commitment I am racking up on average 14000+ steps each day now. Next week will not change my strategy at all so lucky Christmas day is on a feed day Thursday and now I am having an outer body experience in that my body is now undergoing a full body transformation will my tummy collapse back into its original self?? I bloody well hope so πŸ˜† however from the man boobs then slipping down past the love handles now all that’s left is a baby bump 😯 no keg no barrel no veranda how bizarre how bizarre

    RT

    Good morning All,
Having a ‘home’ day before my guest arrives this weekend, more cleaning, more sorting. Cancelled plans to bowl today, too much to do.

Dalai Lama was a very wise man, if only everyone could live by that suggestion the world would be a much better place. The other mantra is ‘do no harm’.

I can be a bit of a bitch sometimes, trying to reel it in and be more tolerant of selfish individuals, can be hard to ignore though. But I am on board with not doing any more harm to my own body and to helping others. I noticed at dinner last night that an elderly friend has gained a lot of weight due to health problems. I will see if I can persuade her to join us after Christmas is over. I do believe it is more difficult if you are immobile, but not impossible and I know she will be very unhappy about the weight gain. It is more difficult to convince the 70 plus though because they have been brainwashed their whole lives that three meals a day is ‘good for you’.

Just made some veggie soup as out tonight, hopefully more fish to order.

Have a good fast day everyone. My sympathies are with the 4:3 ers. It seems to me the longer you are on this plan the easier it gets but temptations will always be around. It is a psychological battle.

I too have a ‘pounds off’ physical symbol, glass nuggets transferred from one plastic wine glass to another. It’s quite a conversation piece for regular visitors, they are amazed that the once full glass on the right is now just under the half way mark. They are large wine glasses, trust me, I started with over 100 lbs to lose.

How exciting, my fitbit just arrived, now to read the instructions.

    Speak later

    Jojo xx

    Afternoon all.

Busy busy morning. I was out of the flat before 8, went to the recycling centre, got rid of 4 more bags of clothes including my brown suede jacket and my bright pink jacket, both of which have been worn thousands of times but are now falling off. Charity shops aren’t taking anything at the moment.
Then I went to the supermarket as I’m cooking dinner for some friends on Sunday.
After that it was straight to the garden centre for potting compost and 10 sacks of shingle for the front of the house. Not a garden, just a space between the front of the building and the front wall. The surface is really uneven, so I thought shingle would be the cheapest and quickest option to make it look nice. It’ll also keep the cats off!
I came home and laid the shingle, then planted up the tubs and pots. It looks fab if I say so myself, and apart from painting the back steps, which has had to be delayed until tomorrow due to the weather, everything is finished.
I then went shopping to pick up a few last minute items. It is eerily quiet everywhere considering it is only a week until Christmas.
I bought some sushi from the new outlet, a huge box and only 443 calories. It’s not a FD today but I’m trying to be really strict this week, and it will make a lovely dinner.
I’ve been in my flat for 30 years today so a small celebration in the form of a G&T will be this evening’s treat.
Have a good day everyone Smiley

    Hi jojo,

One of my brothers began fasting for health after watching Horizon, but is one of Pharaohs lean kind so can only do 6:1.

I began in Jan 14, but didn’t tell anyone for a month (when I knew it was working).

My Dad is 82, and decided to give it a go in June. He can’t be doing with counting calories, and will be eating more than quarter TDEE (he eats evening meal only now, but that often includes cheesecake and wine πŸ™‚ ). However, he has dropped from 15st5 to 13st7, his blood pressure is lower, and his arthritic knee much improved. He wants to lose another stone, but it’s slow progress now.

He is of that generation of 3 meals a day, breakfast being the ‘law’, and biscuits/cake with morning coffee and afternoon tea and, to be honest, is a terrible overfeeder of others (so is to blame for my fat childhood…!). I am surprised and delighted that he has taken to it so well, and will hopefully now have healthier years ahead of him.

It’s never too late to make a change.

    HappyNow,
    Don’t we all know it?
    Jojo xx

Fingers crossed you can persuade your ‘elderly’ friend. I should warn you if she is younger than my Dad he would be most put out by that description…!

When I see the term “village elder” I see it as a sign of respect, whereas the word elderly especially after working in the NHS for so long, has come to mean (to me) physically and often mentally infirm. It is not a word I would like to hear used to describe any of my nearest and dearest, and yet it is accurate.
The dictionary says aged, old, mature, senior, ancient, venerable.
Mature and venerable are OK, aged and old are accurate I guess, senior, as in senior citizen I absolutely loathe. I have a friend who refers to anyone older than her as ancient. She is 72…………..
The problem is, what do we call those of us who are at the three score and 10 or more mark?

I’ve been thinking about buying a fitbit. Jojo, do let us know what you think of it after you’ve used it for a few weeks. I’ll stick with my cheap Omron for now even if it doesn’t take into consideration the fact that I took several hundred steps this morning carrying heavy sacks. I’m positive I burned more calories than it tells me, and my arms are telling me so too!

Young in heart and mind, old in body?

    Of advanced/ advancing years?

    Just elders?

I agree that elderly now conjures up images of infirmity.

Morning fellow losers/fasters πŸ˜€ what a lovely day (I hope — it’s too dark outside to see just yet, lol) — I woke at 4am to find we’ve got no power. It came back on about 10 minutes ago, the first thing I had to do was my weights/measures. Happy (in fact ecstatic) to have lost another 700g (approx 1.5 lb) so at least I’m happy that I’ll hopefully be maintaining over the next two weeks with a little judicious fasting/semi-fasting in between functions.

Hi to Wee, Smiffy, RT, Name, Nicky, PVE, Happy, Jojo, Hermaj (hope you’re still reading at least πŸ™‚ ) Amazon, Emel, SAMM and all the new posters (who’s names escape me right now πŸ˜† )

My mother would hate to be called old … she’ll be 85 in under 2 weeks, her boyfriend has just turned 80 … she considers herself to be quite young still as I guess inside she is (as am I btw πŸ˜† ). I guess that if people feel old inside then they’ll possibly age outside quicker, I would still say my mum is spry, she still drives, is quite active and travels overseas every couple of years (due to go again next year).

I’m hoping to get a fit bit before too long as I’d love to know exactly how much I am moving each day, so Jojo please let us know how it goes πŸ˜€

Catch up soon … out to work Christmas lunch today, followed by out to tea/dinner tonight with friends (might have to just have dessert rather than meal if still full from lunch) so definitely FD tomorrow otherwise I’ll be like a blimp!!!

Ha!ha1 Jojo you have another friend of 72 lol..ME!!!

I honestly don’t think I will EVER feel old .

Hello everyone else ..as RT says you all know who you are :). I have been shortening 2 pairs of new trousers for Dad and one for OH . ironing name tabs on all the new things we have for him for Christmas .

Was at the hairdressers and got a trim and got my eyebrows waxed . I wonder how many ounces I lost lol . got loads of compliments too

Can I ask please? what do parsnips taste like . I was going to roast some with my butternut squash . :).

Did I tell you I was under the next stone . :). I think I did lol . Anyway I really just came in to say thank you to all you lovely people for helping me feel as good as I do today .

Have a great day/night all of you lovely people xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Wee xx

    Hi Wee,
parsnips are sweet when they are roasted. They don’t really taste like anything else. I love them, and they make really nice soup too.
My downstairs neighbour knocked on the door earlier, wished me a Happy Christmas, and given me some freshly baked banana cake still warm from the oven and a bottle of wine.
The cake was lovely, he is a good baker and a very nice young man.
Well under my TDEE today, even after eating the cake πŸ˜›

    Hi gang
Just lying in bed in a motel recovering from what can only be called drunken indulgence. Not mine, but my fellow party goers! I was relatively restrained!
Started yesterday morning when a dear friend gave me a muffin she had just made. I wasn’t going to have breakfast, but had to eat it to be polite. Thought the lumps were blueberries. No. They were chocolate chip. Urrrgghh. Travelling to the country we stopped for a wee break (literally Wee πŸ˜‰ ) and had salad with goats cheese tart. Mmmm! Had planned on no lunch. That’s what eating carbs in the morning does to my appetite/resolve.
The evening Christmas party was a sit down affair. Lots of people topping up wine and passing around delicious, wicked nibblies. I had had enough to eat when along came entre…haloumi and salad. Main course of roast pork. I ate the crackling, one tiny spud and brocolini. Gave the rest away, even though it was delicious. I gave desert away too. I watched with amazement as others drank 4 times as much as me and polished off all their food. That would have been me in the past. I just can’t do that now. And I don’t want to.
I feel great this morning. I made sure I drank as much water as I could get my hands on. No dehydration and filled me up.
A couple of OTT feasts like this won’t break the bank, but some of these people obviously do it frequently. How sad. P

My friend actually describes herself as a fossil ( she is 86) and yes walks only very short distances due to breathing difficulties, knee problems and frequent back issues. Her mind however is exceptional, she has a phenomenal general knowledge and wide ranging cultural and historical interests.

I would not use any terminology which I thought would upset people but I know several over 70’s who do not like the term senior citizens. I am actually involved in a group which is challenging ‘age’ preconceptions. I have the deepest respect for active retired people who remain involved in the community.

Let’s not fall out over ‘terminology’, no lack of respect was intended, it was just a choice of descriptive words. Threads can break down over issues like this, please do not take offence, none was intended.

    Jojo xx

    Hi jojo,

    Don’t worry, no one’s falling out πŸ™‚

Don’t think my Dad’s fossilized yet, just pickled in red wine and gin…!

    Like the “wee” break πŸ™‚

Jojo I hope you know I was just having a joke at me being your other friend at 72 . Not that I was joking about being your friend πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Age is only a number pal xx

    Wee xx

    Hi Everyone,
Back from my meal out, crab cakes and grilled cod with salad, no pud, no alcohol. It’s easy when you know you have no choice if you are going to go out again tomorrow night. Aaaarrrggghhh.
But I will be dancing tomorrow night which should make a difference.

Today was not the best fast day. I was nibbling nuts all day( high cal Brazil nuts), plus two bowls of chilli veg soup and a whole pack of prawns. What can I say, just one fast too many this week.

Wee, do roast your parsnips, lovely(especially in goose fat) sorry guys sacrilege I know but taste wonderful. Spicy parsnip soup is wonderful, add ‘garam masala’ and any other root veg you have to spare. I always include garlic, ginger and a little natural yogurt too. Some people add honey but I find that too sweet.

I will report on the fitbit but don’t plan on using it daily until after 25 th, but complicated to work out how to set it up. Records calories expended even through sleeping, could be interesting.

I have also been given gifts of food/drink, I do not plan on eating them, all high calorie gifts, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, wine and jams. I have thanked my friends and told them I look forward to sharing their gift with friends. I am making up a hamper for our local Christmas lunch for the homeless event. I think they can be called friends after I spend the day helping to feed and clothe them.

It’s interesting that some of my friends should give me these goods when they know I have been dieting for 18 months. I don’t understand why, it’s very odd.

I have decided to spend next Christmas in New Zealand with my daughter, it should make a nice change. Hopefully she will get a flat with a spare room. What customs should I learn about tanga?

I am not fasting tomorrow as plans for lunch and dinner, heaven help me!
    Jojo xx

Actually I think we should resolve this age label before we get to that point.

    How about 3rd ager?

    Jojo,

Re: snacking on nuts. They might be high cal, but it’s fat not sugar, so shouldn’t do too much damage.

Don’t think your daughter will need a spare room for you next Christmas. By then you’ll be able to sleep on an ironing board/ washing line πŸ™‚

Actually I am known for being able to sleep on a washing line. Give me a pillow, hot water bottle and blanket and I am happy.

    Wee,

Down here we say we good sleepers can “Sleep under a barbed wire fence” which I am certain I could if I needed to! Sleep well you guys! X

I’ll never be old. Have been sixteen since 1967!
The Fitbit is easy to set up. I used mine when I reached goal to monitor my energy in and out. I quickly grew sick of entering all my food. It seemed obsessive. I did learn I had a good feel for how much I needed to eat. Also that I’m a poor sleeper. πŸ™
OH took it over months ago. He uses it only to monitor steps. But it works well for him. He often suggests a walk as he hasn’t reached 10000. He whips his phone out at the mention of it to check his steps. So sweet. P

    PVE,
    Please advise
I have just charged up the battery from the mains till it started making a purring sound, about 10-15 mins. I downloaded fitbit on my phone but it hasn’t synced.

I am checking out the set up instructions on line now.

Should the bracelet be lit up, this one is not.

    It’s the flex version

    Jojo

Giving up on it tonight, past my bedtime.

    Probably have a little read.

Assume fitbit will purr again when cooked

My apologies for not keep current.
Last day of being in load out dept for loading trucks. Much more tired than usual sleeping like a rock star all day then out all night. I wouldn’t be able to fast loading trucks all the time.
Only 6000 steps, and craving protein. My appetite seems bottomless . Feeling kind of lost and off track . I look forward to getting back to the IF 4:3 disciplines. Getting back to confidence of moving toward my goal.
Will try to log on so etime this week end.
    Wishing you all the best.

Look after yourself Samm. We need our US component. πŸ˜‰ P

Good afternoon to all my fast-tracking mates.

Sorry for long silence, been reading but never enough time to respond to posts. Now my last post is at least two pages back πŸ™

Lizzie, such wonderful news on your beautiful bonnie grandson. Aren’t they adorable? Grandparenthood is one of the best things to have happened to me and I love my two to bits.

Welcome new members and thanks to the maintenance mob for your collected wisdom.

    Well done everyone on losses.

No losses to report from me because of Christmas socializing and general slackness – so much for my stated intentions earlier!

One bright note though is that I had an EOY assessment at my gym on Wednesday. Since starting this WOL at the end of January this year I have lost nearly 14kg, 15cm from my waist and my fat % has declined 5.4%. In the same interval my lean muscle mass has increased by 6.2%. My PT is very interested in my 5:2 journey, as I mentioned before and was impressed by my results in light of the fact that I don’t feel at all deprived and, having practised this WOL for nearly a year now, can still face continuing – something very rare among his other overweight clients who can only live the ‘deprived’ life for so long before backsliding.

At the beginning of December I halved my bp meds and monitored twice daily in the first week then once or twice a week since. My bp is now regularly about 115/70 so after Christmas I will halve the pills again.

Had a meeting yesterday with other members of an editorial group who haven’t seen me for several months. All very interested in my progress after one asking very tentatively if I was well, as I had ‘lost so much weight’. Another lady in similar position to me with bad arthritis and despair at ever getting her weight under control has resolved to start. Had lots of questions so of course referred her to ‘the book’ and this site.

Keep up the good work all. Life’s a bit hectic at this time of the year but will continue reading, even if no time to post. N xxx

    Congratulations Nicky! You’re a champ! !!…. back to work Purple. .. πŸ˜‰
