  • Hello to Speedy especially

I really hope the RR has been doing it’s thing regarding your big day tomorrow. I read jojo’s post re-her many visits to the operating theatre and I was reassured on your behalf.

It’s easy to say try to stay calm and stuff but try to stay calm and stuff!
It will be over before you know it and you’ll be back here giving us a blow by blow description.

I’m glad you are getting dropped off tomorrow and that someone is looking after your precious pooch; I hope you have been giving the pooch some RR too because, as you know, they will fret because they will wonder why you have left them.

Sending you my very best wishes for a Speedy op and an even more Speedy recovery! Post as soon as you can just to tell all about the awful hospital food!

    BooBoo xx

    Hey ply24mp

I did wonder after I posted if you were in the States. I have trawled our supermarkets for miracle noodles and fibre one but think I might have to pay big bucks by using Amazon. My daughter lives in London so she will look about for them there. I can’t find an equivalent fibre cereal that is high in fibre and so low in cals:(

    Thanks x

    🙂 PBB!
I’m just ready to get it over with now. Enough waiting about!
I feel happy my precious pooch will be very spoilt.
She knows something is up. You can’t get something past a border collie!
I’ll certainly let you know how it went when I get home. Thanks, xx

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

This is a first in many an old year; it’s the night before a Good Friday and we aren’t having any wine with our meal! It has happened quite naturally because Thursday is my second fast day and it didn’t even enter my head to change it. When we were at work (not so long ago); this was a precious long weekend and so the celebrating and good food and wine would start tonight and finish on Monday night.
But because my weight loss is so hard won; I didn’t want to spoil last week’s momentous achievement just so I could have an extra night quaffing wine. Very pleasant though it is…..

Hey LUVTCOOK – 9lbs is not bad at all considering it is such early days. It sounds as if you weigh more than once a week so this will show up every variation in your weight; I just stick to the morning after my second fast day and that is it. And remember, I’m only TEN STONE SOMETHING! after 9 ½ months of pure hard slog.

Are you saying; you ‘only’ do back to back fasting because you feel so much better on the second day? Or did it have anything to do with perhaps thinking you lose more weight that way?
Re-the chocolate debacle; ordinarily we don’t happen to have chocolate within a 20 mile vicinity but it was my husband’s birthday a couple of weeks ago and he had chocolate left over from then. It was a rotten job but someone had to do it…..

Hey jojo – Loving the sound of your black leather jacket not being tight anymore and now ‘fitting like a glove’. To me that it so much more indicative and satisfying than the scales saying such and such a loss.
I don’t take much convincing; I’m going to try an experiment with back to back FD and will see how it goes for me.

Hey piper – I have said this before; you Yanks have a really lovely way with words…..you especially.

Hey bayleafoz – I so know what you mean about appreciating having your ‘weight under control’ at this often problematic stage in our lives. I don’t know if I’d say mine is ‘under control’ but I’ve been able to lose some weight for the first time in decades instead of just increasing no matter what I did.
No wonder you are suitabley chuffed about 4 inches off your waist! That must feel fan dabby dozy! (That’s something really great in Scottish!).

Hey Speedy – Saying your precious pooch knows ‘something is up‘; they do don’t they? Both our precious pooches knew when they were going to get a bath; it only happened about 3 times a year and we used to whisper to each other about how to get them up the stairs surreptitiously but they knew and ran away from the stairs! Whilst ordinarily they would follow us everywhere if they could; without question.
My husband used to have to carry them up the stairs and put them in the bath and boy, they were no light weights. It’s a miracle he didn’t put his back out hauling them about!
And some humans call them ‘dumb animals‘….HuH!

Anyways, not sure if I’ll be posting over the Easter Weekend but you never know. Wasn’t really planning on buying any Easter chocolate because then you just have to eat it to get rid of it….

Have a lovely Easter Weekend ALL LOACA’s!
(Just remembered you Speedy; your weekend won’t exactly be ‘lovely’ but it will in a very important way because you will be down ONE BIG STONE just like that and after recuperation; no more needless pain!)

    Onwards and Downwards Ladies!

    Hi PreciousBooBoo and Loaca’s all,

I have a very good feeling about back to back fasting. I think we are on to something. You definitely feel better on the second day, seems easier, weird. There is also satisfaction in your own control of this ***** curse that is slow metabolism.

I removed all my ‘usual’ foods from the flat and shopped for low carb. I realised that I now do not have any, I mean any, food habit that has not been changed. I no longer say ‘ I can’t give up my butter, porridge, semi skim milk – because actually I will do whatever it takes because that is the way to lose weight. Change, change, change everything.

Glad you are joining the back to backers(BB’s) I am sure you will be sucessful. Fancy looking into low card fruits and veg too, I am convinced it is helping me. As for bread, potatoes, rice, porridge, cereals and pasta no longer mentioned in my home.( apart from Sunday roasties) well I’m only human – just.

Well done on ‘no vino’ day. I gave up on alcohol at New Year until I reach my weight goal, current thoughts 18 months maximum but who really knows. Not drinking has not been difficult at all. I like presse or sparkling water. My friends seem more upset than me.

Measurements – Waist and hips down by 4 inches also, so it must be catching. Bust hasn’t changed one jot which is really annoying. Maybe it’s working it’s way up? Might be a while before my three chins move on then. Chin, chin, chin up.

I have 3 restaurant meals planned this weekend, wish me luck? At least I will have done 4 fasts this week so it will help, I hope!

My garden has had a makeover today, planted up lots of pots, very colourful. Decorating not going so well though, no enthusiasm for doing it on my own. Who cares, not me, my priorities are fun and fasting.

Have a lovely Easter, special thoughts to Speedy, be strong ladies you are only depriving yourself of more fat if you don’t eat the chocolate. If you do indulge you can always add another fast day next week.

Must share this. It was reported today that people about to retire maybe issued with guidance as to how long they can expect to live so that they could plan their finances accordingly.

Just out of curiosity I went on to the recommended website to find out how long hermaj might be around to continue being a pain in the bum. According to their calculations I will live to a couple of months after my 94th birthday, which is great but I could get run over by a bus tomorrow. Also these predictions may well be a load of bollocks.

The bit that made me smile was the statement that on average women with my BMI die at 71 years and 3 months. So according to statistics I should have been dead for 3 years already. Had I visited the site before 5:2, that would probably have been around 8.

    Hello Hermajtomomi,
What a ridiculous idea, I cannot believe it! How can they possibly account for every eventuality? I think everyone should plan for 100 years, that way very few would get caught out financially. My poor Dad didn’t even make it to my age, he died at 54, thanks to a heart problem he acquired in his childhood through catching Rheumatic Fever.
In many countries in the world people have never even heard or would care what a BMI level is they are too busy trying to survive. I totally agree with you, total bollocks, can we say that word on here? Very satisfying, I usually put in *** to avoid offending people but what the hell, hopefully we are all grown ups and it is just a body part after all.
I plan to carry on to a ripe old age and keep as physically active as possible hence the dieting now, weight is not conducive to knees and hips joints, is it?. Although the bones are probably more dense to deal with the weight bearing. I wonder what the average weight is of a 90 year old? You never know it will probably be recommended that we are all fat for 20 years in our middle years to extend life and bone strength. At least our fat bodies can cope with a bit of cold, no hypothermia for us when we can’t afford the heating bill. Teehee. Sorry about the rant but it is good to change the subject for a while.

Hi Jojo. Yay!! Rant away. I feel sure we would be friends if we lived near each other. Go girl go. 🙂 Totally agree that being a small amount plump will be good for bones and old age. However, until now I was overweight which brings other problems, as we know. 🙂 my grandma ( rounded, but not obese) lived to 92 and I always believed that I would too. My mum ( rounded but not overweight) is already 92 and going strong. She has done lots of gardening, very physical, all her life. My dad was fit, but had Alzheimer’s so decided he had enough by 88. Literally lost the will to live. So that is what I really worry about. Once I saw the link between sugar and dementia, I gave it away in all forms and in processed food. Just occasionally, I have a piece of chocolate, figure it won’t kill me. Hehe. 🙂

    Hi Bayleafoz,
Sugar and dementia? Tell me more? I don’t eat much sugar, never have so I haven’t done any research on this subject but I have two close friends who virtually live on the stuff. I would like to warn them.
My mother had dementia for her last 15 years but she had quite a charmed life and died at 90. It only really upset her when she couldn’t find things and when she couldn’t do knitting, which she had done all her life. She wasn’t articularly overweight but she loved a jam butty and boiled sweets. Believe it or not she used to give us sugar sandwiches when we were children. She was an incredible cook which is probably why I love my food. At least that skill stopped with me, my kids have no interest in food at all. I am the queen of burnt pizza. No hope for me I am afraid. I can boil veg and steam fish so that at least means I eat something other than charcoal. Mind you I seem to recall that charcoal is a good source of something or other!
I love this thread, so many like minded souls with great humour against difficult and restrictive lives, well on the food front anyway.
Off to walk the dogs then my yoga class, have fun!

    Hi jojo and bayleaf,

If this government-sponsored arrangement whereby retirees were encouraged (or even required!) to consult with some pensions or insurance industry specialist actually happens, who would set the criteria by which their life prospects were measured? If it’s the same bunch who, when it comes to travel insurance, assume that at 65+ or even at 60+ you are liable to drop dead as soon as you step outside your front door and therefore charge you extortionate rates, can they possibly be taken seriously? I don’t think so.

It’s interesting that you both have or had bonny old ladies who lived into their 90s. I believe there is one school of thought that believes that past age 50 or so it’s actually preferable to be anything up to 10lbs overweight as, among other things, protection against osteoporosis.

My mum also had rheumatic fever as a child but made it to 72 when she sadly died in an accident, but two of her brothers made it into their 90s. Of course, I’d like to live to a ripe old age but only in reasonable physical and mental health. I’ve always said if I can’t wipe my own bum I don’t want to be here. The same applies if I lose my marbles – one of the reasons I’m still working at a job that requires considerable intellectual agility while also doing a part-time MA, although even that isn’t a guarantee I won’t lose it at some point in the future. If it can happen to great minds like Iris Murdoch and, just days ago, Gabriel Garcia Marquez who won a Nobel Prize for literature, why should the rest of us escape?

Old age is, I think, a state of mind. When I first met my now mother-in-law she was 66 and in excellent health. In the past she had always had pets, but claimed that at her age she didn’t want another in case she died and there was no one to care for it. She was fit and active until 92 or so, which meant she missed 25 years of companionship. Over the last couple of years she has developed severe dementia and it frightens both me and my husband that either of us may well go the same way.

Finally, on the subject of naughty words I think all but the very bad monosyllabic ones are allowed here and one must resort to asterisks. On one forum I used to contribute to your post would be disallowed if you used asterisks, but not if you used dashes. Very strange.

Good morning (or whenever!) I am no good with time changes. I can’t even wrap my head around time-travel movies! I suppose it is helpful to plan for what might happen as far as longevity and finances, all the while keeping in mind that we are here now and live in the moment. I agree that a little meat on one’s bones is beneficial going into old age. My mother in law is a little bit of a thing, and I worry that she will have no stamina if faced with a serious health issue.
Got my 3 fast days in this week, and just weighed in, down 3.4 pounds, which seems crazy. I have never had such sustained success on any eating plan. My average loss has actually increased over the last 3 weeks. I am expecting a plateau anytime now, but will ride this wave as long as I can.
School vacation week starting today! Hosting brunch for Easter with my sons’ friends, nice to be around the young folks, and super-excited that a 3-year old little girl is coming. Nothing like the little ones for the holidays! Traveling for my other (Education consulting) job most of next week, so much for a break, but must make hay while the sun shines! Happy everyone!

One more piece of good news (to those checking out the thread and wondering if 5:2 works):

Hit my 10 lbs lost (and it stayed on the scale for 2 days in a row, my rule for whether to believe it or not).

Reply to Saint Boo: I don’t think the back to back fasts result in extra weight loss (it could I suppose, but I doubt it). I just think it just feels better as I only have the sort of “off” feeling on Day 1 and by Day 2 feel less hungry and more alert. I always feel a bit empty but not really hungry.

And I am much less hungry if I avoid the carbs on fast days and stick to protien, veg and up my good fats. The butter, olive oil and fatty meat/fish cuts keep me much more satiated. Carbs really do induce hunger for me (spikes insulin). Upping your fat % when on very low total calories makes you less hungy.

So streaky bacon for breakfast, eggs and salad for lunch, and for supper salmon with asparagus and a quick easy hollandaise sauce (1 egg yolk, 1 TBS of water in saucepan, heat and whisk briskly until thick and ribbony and then drizzle in/whisk 3 TBS of melted butter…slow at first and then can go faster for the last half. Good squeeze of fresh lemon juice, dash of cayenne and salt & pepper). Easy peasy. I happily watch TV over dinner while dipping steamed asparagus into my big dollop of hollandaise. Its the reward for giving up pasta/bread for all but 2 days a week.

Another current favorite is “rich scrambled eggs” with 2 whole eggs and one extra egg yolk. I saute either 1-inch pieces of asparagus or some mushrooms , maybe bits of ham, in skillet with generous butter, and add the egg mixture. Cook until done but still moist. Bit of herbs (fresh or dried) on top. Grate some cheese over occassionally. Wonderful easy lunch or dinner on a fast day.

I am loving that meals on my fast days (still under 500 cal) are fast quick and a break from lost of prep and lots of dishes. And cheap.

For those worried about impact on your lipid panels, I lost 25 lbs 2 yrs ago on low carb with upping my good fats (butter, olive oil, coconut oil, lots of nuts) and had the best lab values of my life with higher HDL, lower LDL (the bad one) and blood pressure the lowest in 5 yrs. Fat is your friend as long as you don’t eat it with any significant carbs. The two don’t play nice with one and other. I eat no sugar (only sugar substitutes).

My current WOE is to have 2 Feast days per week with moderate carbs but make sure those meals are reasonable in total calories (1500 – 1800 for the day). On my low carb days I don’t really watch the calories and increase my fats to feel full. No carbs and high fats on fast days (stay under 500-600 cal).

Even if you are not interested in modifying your carbs on any other days of the week, I really encourage you to try low to no-ish carbs on your two fast days. You will be less hungry.

At 10 lbs in 10 weeks I am pretty happy with how this is going for now. Sorry this is long, just wanted to share in case this helps someone else.

Have a great long weekend to all. Happy Easter and/or Passover, or just Rite of Spring for all else.

Congrats on the big one-oh, Luvtocook! Double digits!! And thanks for the Hollandaise recipe. I love to cook also, and am always looking for good recipes. Can’t do with steamed chicken and veg all the time!! There is a link to an article on the website called “Foodies on 5:2” that had some good recipes.

Lovetocook, what are you doing? seriously! Those foods are all my favourites, I am drooling. Please remember that some us are on a fast day. I too will try that sauce tomorrow as I am cooking ‘skate wing’. But I really think we need to talk about such things on a different thread. Why don’t you start one calling it ‘mouth wateringly good recipes’ perhaps?. Stop tormenting us here. I did the wrong thing last night too, watched ‘Great British Menu’ and ‘Masterchef’, I don’t recommend it on a fast day. I dreamt food all night.
I am definitely into low carbs now, it really supports 5 : 2 well.

    Hi all,
Just discovered that I am on u tube with my choir.
Spot me doing warm ups ‘fuzzy focus, thank goodness’
At least you can put a chubby face to a name.
Link is ‘sounds like art – Turner Gallery.
Our choir mistress has developed this piece of music for her PHD and the Theatres anniversary.

Love it, Jojo! You’re a star. We will all say, “We knew her when…”

I’m very sorry but you will only be able to contact via my agent from now on(teehee – oops no tra la la lala)

jojo: we would be good friends if we were in the same city….at least good eating buddies. I LOVE skate wing and it is hard to get in the states….everytime my local grocer has a special and carries it, bingo, that is what I will be having for dinner that night. Sublime.

ply54mp: so sorry to temp, but that WAS my fast day meal plan. High fat low carb = hollandaise. Per your advised checked out the Foodies 5:2…great reading and good recipes. I do like this WOE….on fast days put out very little effort to cook (fast and easy) which makes me more enthusiastic to do something more ambitious on weekends. I do love to cook….just hate the cleanup afterwards.

Just checked out our new star on the web, then started watching all the related videos about Margate and the Turner. Jojo: you have a lovley vital community. How wonderful to be a part of all that. Sing out for all of us!

    Hi LUVTCOOK,
I have the best wet fish shop just 2 minutes from my door, the fish are caught overnight and on the counter the next morning. People are queuing all day. We are on the coast so why would you eat anything else? I have a different fish every day but I do love skate wing, sea bass, sea bream, red mullet, lemon sole, hake, also they do dressed crab, lobster, scallops, prawns, cockles, mussels even squid. The only fish I don’t like is Tuna and the only seafoods I dislike are oysters and jellied eels – yuk

I would be friends with lots of lovely people on this site, they are a great support and good laugh. Mostly laughing at their own ridiculous diet journeys and adventures.

I am back from an evening of ‘Country and Western’ music, very good ‘live’ band and comedic choir performance. I wish I had recorded that for u tube. Food was not inspiring though, cowboy stew, seriously what a waste of calories. I had been looking forward to fish and chips after a two day fast, then presented with a bowl of baked beans, onion, bacon(microscopic amount) and three lumps of sausage. To add insult to injury it was a child size portion. I ate three bowls of it then a huge quantity of popcorn(plain). Not the best way to end a fast, wonder what the scales will have to say tomorrow, still lots of fibre in them beans.
Danced a few calories off though(Long Tall Sally – now that’s a great song). Everyone there was incredibly short under 5 ft, most odd, I felt like a giant yet I am only 5 ft 5 ins, my husband said it’s because they have shrunk with age, what a depressing thought, most were over 60 and oldest was 85, he was a game old fellow, still jigging about out of time and very poorly co-ordonated, but at least he was trying.
Oh well, time for bed – another few hours fasting, I can’t wait for breakfast but only after my weigh in.

Speedy- that’s all- I really want you to wake up-and be okay…

    To Speedy,
Wishing you a ‘speedy’ recovery, missing you already
    Jojo

Speedy – we are all thinking of you and sending healing vibes your way.
Jojo it was great to hear your positive outcome and thoughts of theatre/nursing staff. Having worked in an Operating Theatre for 20ish years, I can tell you patients thanks are few and far between. I know my staff gave 100% professional care for those having surgery and they all knew who the most important person in theatre was – the patient. Thank you 🙂

    Hi All,
Wouldn’t it be nice if this system automatically went to the last page, most recent message. Am I the only one who gets annoyed with this? Is there a quick way round it?

I have just been walking round a Food Festival, absolute torture but I had promised to go with a friend. I got out without buying one thing. I can assure you this is the first and last time that will happen. Going back there Monday for a Hog Roast lunch.

Today I had to save myself for a three course healthy meal I am preparing for a friend for dinner. I an absolutely starving, just a low cal soup for lunch and a very active day.

I am considering planning a detox, initially just a weekend, anybody tried this? The way I see it eating wise I am virtually there so it might be good to add skin, massage, conciousness, meditation for a weekend. Has anyone done this? I have just read Total Detox by Jane Scrivener – looks tough but worthwhile. My skin could do with a good brushing down before summer, probably need a yard broom taken to it!
The early morning cold shower seems a bit scary though Brrhhhh! Second thoughts maybe not till June.
Still feeling powerful and in control, requested friends and family to avoid buying me Easter Eggs, I have bought none either, chose small gifts instead. Hope they will be pleased tomorrow with their comfy socks, strapless sun tops and juice beakers. No fast until Tuesday – heaven. Hope all you guys are having a lovely Easter break!

    To LindyW,
My best encounters both in NHS and Private hospitals have been with surgical staff. My worst with medical staff. I speak as I find and thank persons who are caring, considerate and respectful.

I admit that I only have private treatment now as life is too short to suffer waiting lists and snoring neighbours. I think my health is my most valuable asset and top priority. More important than holidays so spend the money on private insurance. Don’t regret one penny of it.

    Jojo xx
I am sure you did a great job too

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

    Happy Easter everyone!

Has anyone allowed themselves to consume chocolate? There is a Terry’s Chocolate Orange (my absolute favourite) in our fridge and it is calling to me. Normally I can resist chocolate fairly easily but it is Easter and it’s tradition to eat some kind of chocolate……Let’s see how long it stays in the fridge….

First things first SPEEDY – If you are home and reading this – you need to let us know that you are alright! You might still be in pain but just leave a short post to reassure us.
I hope you are all snugged up on your sofa with your precious pooch……

    Moving on…..

Hey LUVTCOOK – Fantastic weight loss result! I thought you were the one having the slow start? 10lbs in ten weeks! That is amazing.

I’ve decided you are this week’s STAR LOACA!!
(We haven’t even started the week yet and you have won the award already!).

I’m definitely going to try back to back fasts for at least a month or so. When I have done them, out of necessity, I definitely didn’t unfortunately notice feeling any better in myself the second day, which doesn’t surprise me at all. But because in the main, I’ve always separated my fast days; I will be able to discern whether it is making any difference to my torturously slow weight loss.

Hi jojo’s agent – Would you please pass this message on to her?

Please tell her not to become so PRECIOUS(!) after her T.V debut and current YouTube slot; that she doesn’t come onto this thread anymore mixing with the proletariat, without the inducement of a considerable fee.
(I was going to put ’White Trash’ there but I was concerned someone might not take it in the humorous way it was meant!).
Four inches off the waist and hips! WEIGH TO GO MAN!

Hi piper – Speedy said she doesn’t have any mobile facilities for coming online and said also that she wouldn’t probably check in with us until Sat or Sunday….She’ll be alright; I bet she is just resting up.

You never did tell us about your vision board? Is it something to do with Cosmic Ordering? If you get the time, please tell us about it; I’m interested.

ZERO NOODLES – For whoever is interested in them; you can definitely get them at Holland and Barratt’s in the UK.

Hi to Lulu01 the LOACA LURKER! – Haven’t heard from you in a bit! Hope you are alright and not sitting there chomping your way through a mound of Easter Eggs!

Also ThintoartinCal – We haven’t heard so much from you lately? Let us know how you are doing.
And again, I‘ll mention lizzie53 who hasn’t posted for a good while. I hope everything is okay with you lizzie?

And K8tie – Hi, I wish you would read back to a few of my messages for you. I know some people don’t read back what has been ‘said’ when they post but we are not usually on this thread at the same time as each other and so it is hard to directly communicate with someone; if they don‘t read back!
    Hopefully ‘speak’ with you soon.

Anyways, I was going to say Be Strong and Keep Off the Chocolate Ladies but how can I say that when the Chocolate Orange is sitting there in the fridge? And it’s got my name on it, metaphorically speaking…..

I think it might be a case of Downwards and Outwards for me this week!
There’s no hope for me but Onwards and Downwards for the rest of you!

Yeah, go on, Precious. Soon your Chocolate Orange will be an ex-Chocolate Orange. We don’t have any Easter eggs, but we do have a bar of Lindt’s dark chocolate with sea salt, which will be consumed in front of the telly as we revert to childhood and watch Toy Story 3. We both deserve it. I’ve been working all day on a difficult translation, for which I’ve issued a gratifyingly fat invoice, and Himself has been building shelves.

Hi guys! Thank you all so much for all your good messages and wishes. It was lovely and cheered me on no end.
I got home yesterday afternoon and I must admit been sleeping late and sitting inthe sun today, had a few visitors so just getting back on the PC.
Well things went OKish. Unfortunately it wasn’t a complete success as they only managed to zapp 50% of the stone before the other half shot back up into my kidney. So a night in medium care with as many bells and buzzers as you ever need to hear. And I have to have it all done over again in a few weeks time they tell me. Still I am hoping it might pass on it’s own – they said probably not but you can hope. Actually I’d like to write a longer blog post about it as a LOACA having a first op even though it’s not really related to 5:2 – but that will be in a day or so I think.
    Hugs to all LOACA. xx

Again, I was so touched by many of your kindness

    Hello All,
Back down to earth with a bump, fame is such a fickle friend, not one request for my autograph. However I had a wonderful day today, no chocolate but I had a huge Sunday lunch, potted shrimp and toast followed by roast beef and trimmings, yum, I could barely move afterwards so I turned down the lift home in favour of a half mile walk along the promenade. It’s so lovely spending time with the family.

PreciousBooBoo, don’t eat that chocolate until after your two day fast, make it a reward if you lose 2 pounds. Best of luck with it. I have kept three pounds off and plan to do another two day fast Tuesday and Wednesday. I think the key to this thing is sharing what we do and carefully analysing the most consistent losers approaches. They are the ones that are very strict with their diet on the other 5 days, always under their TDEE if not less. The problem is we all want to lose but we don’t want to count calories or give up our favourite food and drink. I am now trying to replicate as many of the biggest losers techniques e.g. More water, less carbs.I still have an issue with weighing protein and veg for my evening meal, I think because it’s fish and veg I can have a large portion, this of course is not true.

    Hi Speedy,
Great news that you are out of the hospital, keep drinking and flush that bugger out.
Rest and recoup, then we look forward to hearing from you again soon. Don’t forget to weigh in and report loss on your return, likely to be over the stone!

    Ply24mp and LUVTCOOK,
How is it going? Any new tips? Did you avoid the chocolate?

Easter Monday and I’ve just ignored the family for the past hour reading through this! 😀 I’m new to the page and delighted to find such an awesome group who are really supportive. Feeling positive about it all.

Serves me right! Yesterday evening we each had half a bar of Lindt dark chocolate with sea salt, which can be argued to contain anti-oxydents, but then discovered a half-eaten box of chocolates languishing on a shelf and dating back to heaven knows when. Like an idiot, I tucked in, mostly to milk chocolates. Result? I now feel as sick as a pig and today will probably be an unscheduled extra fast day. Not only am I unused to chocolate, I’m also lactose intolerant and can only take dairy in small doses, so milk chocolate along with cheese and yoghurt eaten earlier in the day did me no good at all.

In a way, it’s good that I feel so dreadful on the rare occasions I overdo things. When most of the time you stick to a healthy way of eating, blow-outs like the one described above leave you sickened but, thankfully, less likely to do it again any time soon.

    Hi jojo,

You say you are considering detox. A good friend of mine who knows about these things, and her hubby, tried the following with great success. Could be worth a look.

“not one request for my autograph”

    You’re giving out autographs?

    Send one my way.

    @hermajtomomi
“I now feel as sick as a pig and today will probably be an unscheduled extra fast day. ”

I seem to remember that you’ve done this before?

I may well have done, rocky. I shall check and get back to you.

I’ve checked, rocky, and as far as I can see it has only happened once, oddly enough quite recently, and involved hot cross buns. I suppose that is not too bad a track record over a period of 14 months. The resultant sick feeling I regard as positive, in that it stops me doing it too often. Not sure why it happened as I really don’t a have a sweet tooth. It may have been because in both instances I had been working hard on a difficult project and this was (a rather unwise and misguided) reward for a job well done.

What has also happened, and I see this too as positive, is that a few weeks ago I began to find a lunchtime sandwich, ciabatta roll or panini was more than I could handle, so I now stick to the lean protein and salad filling without the bread, even on non-fast days, which has led to a considerable drop in carb intake, which can’t be bad.

Speedy- so glad you are “sitting in the sun” and taking it easy. Gr-rr about having to do it again. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon. Chin up, babe.

I’m off to work so I’ll talk to you all later!

    @herma
” It may have been because in both instances I had been working hard on a difficult project and this was (a rather unwise and misguided) reward for a job well done.”

    Yes, could be stress.

I would have to think back to my teens for a time that food caused me to be sick.

    Hello All,
Just have to say OMG, I am finally in control of my eating, it’s only taken 30 years( heavy years). I don’t know whether it’s the diet, leaving my husband or maturity but I can honestly say I have beat the enemy. Today I have refused pastry, alcohol, cakes, chocolate and biscuits. Seriously in the past I may have refused the first two but by the time I got to three I would have caved in, telling myself there is only so much will power. Well now I have it in spades, I feel great. I have maintained last weeks lowest point and am actually looking forward to my next two day back to back fast starting tomorrow. I never thought I would be saying that! I used to dread fast days. It’s a turning point for sure. My life is full and I am having fun. Please don’t let this be a blip. Sending positive energy to all my friends, let’s hope we all have a great weight loss week, I am aiming for two pounds but would be thrilled with three which would cross another stone barrier (my third since last November).
Only 13 more weeks to retirement then it will be more sport, gardening and hobbies, I cannot wait. Of course I won’t have any money but you can’t have everything. I will have to learn to be thrifty.

    Rockyromero,

It was just a joke about giving out autographs, you will need to read back. A microbe of fame that went to my head, but not really, actually I am a wallflower when not using the written word.

But thanks, we all need to be wanted.
    Jojo

Hi jojo, it’s sounds like you are getting things together, I always say take control of the things you can control and that should be what we eat, so, go for it and roll on your retirement, it’s the best thing I have done and I left losing waiting till after I retired too.
Good luck,I did back to back last week but I did not lose but I only want a few more pounds to take me into the 9’s. It’s my fast day today going good so far just been bowling this afternoon the weather was wonderful for a change.

    Hi hermajtomomi,
Thanks for the link but I will be doing it via natural methods not commercial products although I will probably take Kale and odourless Garlic supplements. The book I am using is pretty full on and is called ‘total detox’ I will start by doing a weekend in June the a week in July. Finally one whole month, I am thinking August(possibly).

Be strong, you know that high calorie foods are not a ‘treat’ but a step in the wrong direction. We are waging war on the foods that got us to our blobby bodies, remember that! Thinking of you – enjoy you extra fast day this week!

What an inspiring message to read today, jojo. I’m sending positive energy your way for continued contentment. I love it that you have ‘defeated the enemy.’ What a triumph! How exciting to be counting down the weeks until retirement. I retired from my higher education career in my late 50s, less than 2 years ago. I wasn’t unhappy, but I just knew it was time. Be open to the transitions of retirement. There are many. Open those doors and re-invent yourself. My husband plans on working four-five more years and I found an incredible part-time job at another college. Life is good and I’m excited about losing my goal of 35 pounds, then maintenance. Exercising 4 times a week is slowly re-shaping my body. It feels great.

Kind regards to all and have a lovely week. Jean

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

This is my shortest post ever; I don’t do short ordinarily!

Wow Speedy – had me worried for a bit there.
Welcome back to the land of the liviing!

    Speak more tomorrow.
    Onwards and Downwards LOACA’s!

Hi BooBoo, just to let you know I posted a reply to your request recently on the site you asked for.
Good luck to all you posters on this site.

Hello, All–what lovely & encouraging posts recently. Haven’t posted in a while myself, but I try to read everyone’s and it certainly keeps me motivated. What’s so fun is seeing how this WOL seems to “kick in” for us, and at some point the healthier eating becomes the far preferred way of eating as well, and not just for that downward-sliding scale but because we finally begin to feel (as Jojo58 celebrated) IN CONTROL of our bodies once again. And this seems to feel just as true–and just as important–for those LOACAS who have 2 stone to lose as those who have committed to losing a greater number. (Are you Brits proud of this Yank for using ‘stone’ so comfortably?? Thanks to y’all, I’m constantly converting pounds to stones in my head now!) I’ve been following the 5:2 for nearly 7 months now and am completely thrilled with my 21 lb. (1.5 stone!) loss. It’s been slooooooooow but, as I’ve said before, REAL. I truly believe that I can maintain this loss, AND continue down to my goal weight, just 10 lbs away.

So, a few highlights from this past week:

Last Wed., I had my annual exam with a new doctor. We talked quite a bit about my irregular periods and the ensuing menopausal symptoms–hot flashes, insomnia, WEIGHT GAIN–that go along with it. She noted that I had lost 8 lbs since my appt last year, but then I explained that I had actually put on 14 lbs after that weigh in, topping out at my high weight by late August, and that I had subsequently lost 21 lbs. since then, bringing me down to my current weight of 136. She was really impressed, and asked me how I had managed to do it. So…I asked her if she had heard of the 5:2 and yes, she had. In fact, after our lengthy conversation, she seemed pretty keen to give it a go herself! She is in her mid-40’s and grappling with some of the same issues, and she has a friend who is also trying it and getting good results. When we said goodbye, she said, “Who knows? Maybe ‘I’LL be thinner and healthier by your next appointment, too!”

And last night, while trolling around YouTube, I managed to track down that “Secret Eaters” show that you Brits have written about!! I watched 2 episodes, and was completely sympathetic to those poor people who were so sure that they were even under-eating, and could NOT understand how they were GAINING weight. Their denial reminded me of my own, pre-5:2 frustration when it seemed ‘impossible’ to lose weight. Well, it was impossible to lose it all in 2 weeks like I would’ve preferred, but the 5:2 raised my awareness of what I was actually eating/drinking to a whole new level. So, watching them mindlessly Hoover in all that food was kind of unsettling…I recognized myself in them more than I would like to admit. But none of these people seemed to get any exercise whatsoever, which couldn’t have helped the situation. For me, if I cut out the cardio, my weight loss stalls almost immediately; food is the biggest part of the equation but exercise is also crucial to wellness. My 80 year old mother just started a gentle yoga class, so there’s usually something that can fit in to almost anyone’s fitness state, right? Just one more thing invade to figure out for myself.

Finally, to end this long post on a “Yay! Celebrate with me!” note…I went shopping for a dress for a big social event this Friday. I thought I had the dress all sorted out–an old favorite of mine that I haven’t been able to wear in a couple of years–but when I tried it on again today, it was too big! I was shocked. This was one of my ‘skinny’ dresses that hung in the back of my closet, taunting me as I got heavier and heavier. But it was definitely baggy–not a good look at all. So, off to the dress shop I went and it was unexpectedly fun; things fit so differently than the last time I really had to find a great dress. I didn’t splurge too badly because I know that I’m not actually done losing weight–close, but 8-10 pounds could mean an entire dress size smaller–so I didn’t want to spend too much on a ‘temporary’ fit, but I found one I liked that was also on sale; perfect. I wish I could’ve taken a peek into the future and seen me in that dressing room today, 7 months ago when I started this journey. I had shed a few tears of frustration (and yes, mortification) by that time as dress after dress got pushed to the back of my closet, too tight to wear anymore, but part of me didn’t really believe that I would be able to turn back the tide of what seemed like inevitable, middle-aged weight gain. Ha! We’re certainly proving that theory wrong, aren’t we my fellow LOACAS?

Fasting today but happy to do so; the results are so very, very worth it. I haven’t felt this great in years and am happy that so many on this thread seem to be feeling the same. You are courageous and very inspiring women! Have a wonderful week!

SharATL, another yank here who thinks in stones! Was only planning to read posts tonight, but had to respond to share in your joy of the too big too small dress! You will wow them on Friday!
